What it is like
Every August, Tongyeong, the harbour city on the south coast of Gyeongsangnam-do, celebrates the Battle of Hansan Island, the 1592 sea battle of the Imjin War in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin's fleet used the crane-wing formation (hagikjin) to defeat a Japanese fleet. The festival has run since 1962 and is timed around 14 August, the solar-calendar date of the battle, which was fought on the 8th day of the 7th lunar month. It has no fenced grounds: events spread across the old harbour, from Hansan Daecheop Plaza on Tongyeonghaean-ro to the Gangguan waterfront culture square, Yi Sun-sin Park and the Mujeon-daero street. The core is historical pageantry: a memorial rite, the procession of the Samdo Sugun Tongjesa (the Joseon commander of the three provinces' navies), a gate-guard review, the fleet's departure ceremony and the reenactment of the battle on the sea, which in 2024 put about 100 boats into Admiral Yi's crane-wing line. Around it run a national turtle-ship rowing race for school teams, a citizens' street parade, a youth dance contest, an original musical drawn from the Nanjung Ilgi (Admiral Yi's war diary), Joseon-navy training games for children, a water-play zone, food trucks and a flea market. Since 2024 the 'Tonight Tongyeong' fireworks over the sea in front of Hansan Daecheop Plaza have been the biggest night; the city bills the show as the largest in Gyeongsangnam-do, and in 2026 it fell on Saturday 15 August, the Liberation Day holiday. The festival is a government-designated 'honorary' culture and tourism festival and was named one of the 100 K-Culture tourism events in 2023. Entry is free, and a few hands-on activities charge. Honest caveats: the sea programmes and fireworks depend on wind and swell and can be retimed or cancelled; mid-August is hot (in 2024 the city ran sprinkler trucks and handed out free ice water); the old-town streets around Gangguan have little parking; programmes are in Korean; and Tongyeong has no railway, so from Seoul it is a four-hour bus ride each way, and the evening shows finish after the last regular bus back, so plan to stay the night.
Highlights
- Reenactment of the Battle of Hansan on the sea, with the fleet's departure ceremony; in 2024 about 100 boats formed Admiral Yi's crane-wing line
- 'Tonight Tongyeong' fireworks over the sea in front of Hansan Daecheop Plaza, first held in 2024 and billed as the largest in Gyeongsangnam-do (Saturday 15 August in 2026)
- Procession of the Samdo Sugun Tongjesa, the Joseon commander of the three provinces' navies, with a gate-guard review and the opening ceremony on day one
- National turtle-ship rowing race; in 2024, 297 students in 27 local school teams rowed on Jungnimman bay
- Joseon navy training zone for children (traditional archery, laser shooting and the board game seunggyeongdo) plus a water-play zone
- Original musical drawn from Admiral Yi's war diary, the Nanjung Ilgi (a new 65th-edition musical in 2026)
- Citizens' festival and street parade on the last day, and an evening EDM party
Who it suits. Best for travellers interested in Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Korean naval history, families on summer holiday who want free sea-front shows, and anyone happy to stay a night in Tongyeong for the fireworks; less suited to a day trip from Seoul (about four hours each way by bus, with the main shows in the evening) or to visitors who struggle with August heat and holiday crowds.
Getting there
From Seoul
No train runs to Tongyeong. Take an express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gyeongbu side) to Tongyeong Intercity Bus Terminal: 15 a day in autumn 2026, 4 h 08 m, ₩42,200 superior or ₩54,900 premium (₩65,800 for the late-night bus). Seoul Nambu Terminal has 11 intercity buses a day (4 h 12 m, ₩41,000 superior; ₩31,500 for the one standard bus). From the Tongyeong terminal take a city bus or taxi to the old harbour at Gangguan and Hansan Daecheop Plaza (routes and fares not checked). By rail, the KTX from Seoul Station to Jinju takes 3 h 22 m–3 h 43 m (₩52,700–53,100 standard class in October 2026; SRT services were merged into KTX on 1 September 2026), and buses between Jinju and Tongyeong take about an hour (58 minutes in the Tongyeong–Jinju timetable).
From Busan
Intercity buses link Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal and Tongyeong. From Tongyeong there were 57 departures a day to Sasang in autumn 2026, taking 1 h 23 m–2 h 14 m for ₩15,100–16,200 (₩19,600 superior, ₩18,100 for the last bus of the day); 13 a day also run to Busan Central Bus Terminal (2 h 42 m, ₩23,200). The Busan → Tongyeong timetable was not checked.
From Incheon Airport
Tongyeong's terminal has 8 buses a day to Incheon Airport (Terminal 1 in 5 h 11 m, Terminal 2 in 5 h 27 m; ₩53,500, or ₩64,200 for the three night buses); the airport-to-Tongyeong timetable was not checked. Otherwise go into Seoul and take the express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal.
Last leg from Tongyeong Intercity Bus Terminal (Tongyeong has no railway station)
Express and intercity buses to and from Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Seoul Nambu; intercity buses to Busan Seobu (Sasang), Jinju, Geoje and Incheon Airport. Not walkable to the harbour; take a city bus or taxi to Gangguan and Hansan Daecheop Plaza (routes and fares not checked)
Festival shuttle
No 2026 festival shuttle or temporary car-park plan was found on the pages opened; a travel guide notes that temporary car parks and shuttles have run in some years.
Getting home
Tongyeong has no railway. Last buses from Tongyeong to Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Seoul Nambu for the 2027 festival dates were not checked. The evening programme ran 18:00–22:00 in 2026. In autumn 2026 the last regular buses to Seoul left Tongyeong in the early evening, before it ended, and only a night bus to Nambu (arriving in the small hours, ₩49,200) ran later. Plan to stay overnight, especially on the fireworks night, and check the last bus at Tongyeong Intercity Bus Terminal before the festival day. Buses to Busan Seobu (Sasang) ran until late evening in autumn 2026 (₩18,100 for the last).
Parking
No 2026 parking or traffic-control plan was found. Gangguan and Hangnam-dong are the old town, where parking is short even outside the festival; a travel guide suggests leaving the car at your lodging and walking in.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

- Crowds
- About 233,000 visitors over seven days in 2025. In 2026 the last two days fell on the Liberation Day long weekend (15–17 August, with 17 August a substitute holiday), and the fireworks night was expected to be the busiest.
- Best time to go

Questions travelers ask
When is the Tongyeong Hansan Daecheop Festival 2027?
Not announced yet. The festival is built around 14 August, the solar date of the 1592 battle, and ran 9–14 August 2024, 8–14 August 2025 and 12–16 August 2026, so early to mid-August 2027 is likely. Dates have usually been public by early July.
Is the Hansan Daecheop Festival free?
Yes. Entry to the festival sites, ceremonies and shows is free; KTO notes that some programmes charge, and food is paid.
When are the fireworks?
In 2026 the 'Tonight Tongyeong' fireworks show was on Saturday 15 August, over the sea by the Gangguan waterfront and Hansan Daecheop Plaza; the opening night also had fireworks. The show began in 2024 and is billed as the largest in Gyeongsangnam-do. The start time was not published on the pages opened.
How do I get to Tongyeong from Seoul?
By bus, since Tongyeong has no railway. Express buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal take 4 h 08 m (15 a day, ₩42,200 superior), and Seoul Nambu Terminal has 11 a day (4 h 12 m, ₩41,000). From Tongyeong's terminal, take a city bus or taxi to the harbour.
Can I visit as a day trip from Seoul?
Hardly. The evening programme ran 18:00–22:00 in 2026. In autumn 2026 the last regular buses to Seoul left Tongyeong in the early evening, and the only later bus was a night bus to Nambu arriving in the small hours, so stay overnight. Check the last bus at the terminal before the festival day.
Where can I see the battle reenactment?
On the sea off Tongyeong during the festival; in 2024 about 100 boats formed Admiral Yi's crane-wing line. The 2026 date, time and viewing point were not published on the pages opened, and sea events move with the weather, so check hansanf.org.
What was the Battle of Hansan?
A 1592 sea battle of the Imjin War in which Admiral Yi Sun-sin's fleet used the crane-wing formation to defeat a Japanese fleet off Hansan Island; it is counted among the war's three great victories. It was fought on the 8th day of the 7th lunar month, 14 August in the solar calendar, which is why the festival is held in mid-August.
Is the festival good for children?
Yes. There is a Joseon navy training zone with traditional archery, laser shooting and the board game seunggyeongdo, a water-play zone and the turtle-ship rowing race. Plan around the midday heat.
