What it is like

Haeinsa, on the slopes of Gayasan in the north of Hapcheon County, keeps the Tripitaka Koreana: 81,258 woodblocks of Buddhist scripture, carved over 16 years in the reign of the Goryeo king Gojong and stored in the Janggyeong Panjeon halls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. About 5 km from the temple, the county built the Tripitaka Koreana Theme Park for the 2011 millennium of the first Goryeo Tripitaka, with exhibition halls on how the blocks were carved and how they have survived. This festival fills the park each autumn.

It grew out of the Tripitaka Koreana World Culture Festival, held at the park and around Haeinsa in 2011, 2013 and 2017. Under the records-culture name it ran 19 October–3 November 2019, paused in 2020 and 2021, and has returned every year since 2022. Its length changes a lot: the core programme lasted three days in 2023, five in 2024 and ten in 2025, while the 2026 edition is listed for 24 days.

KTO's 2026 listing describes the theme "a flower-path trip around Hapcheon" (꽃길따라 합천 한바퀴): autumn-flower sculptures of the county's sights arranged on the plaza as a four-stage journey, from a "departure station" with the county mascot Byeolkkungi to a camping-themed last stop. Around it are a chrysanthemum bonsai show, winning works from the national Tripitaka art competition, and family workshops such as caricatures, mother-of-pearl key rings, soap, ceramic gonggi stones and family-motto calligraphy. A participatory history play and magic and balloon acts are also listed, but no daily timetable was published.

The honest caveats: this is a modest county festival, and its information is in Korean apart from a short KTO listing in English. The ticket is the park's normal admission. The park usually closes on Mondays, and the listing does not say whether that changes during the festival. There is no railway nearby: from Seoul it takes a KTX to Daegu, a metro ride and an hour on a country bus. The reward is combining the festival with Haeinsa, which is free to enter, and the Gayasan Sori-gil trail, which follows the Hongnyu-dong valley from the park area up to the temple.

Highlights

  • Autumn-flower sculptures of Hapcheon's sights laid out on the plaza as a four-stage "trip around Hapcheon", the 2026 theme
  • Chrysanthemum bonsai exhibition and winning works from the national Palman Daejanggyeong (Tripitaka Koreana) art competition
  • Family workshops (fees extra): caricatures, coffee-ground fridge magnets, mother-of-pearl key rings, chrysanthemum painting, soap, ceramic gonggi stones and family-motto calligraphy
  • The theme park's halls on how the woodblocks were carved and preserved, plus the free 5D film in the Bit-sori-gwan
  • Haeinsa Temple, home of the 81,258 Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks, about 5 km away and free to enter
  • A 24-day run in 2026 (9 October–1 November), against five days in 2024 and ten in 2025

Who it suits. Best for travelers heading to Haeinsa who want context on the Tripitaka Koreana and an autumn flower display, and for families whose children enjoy craft workshops; less suited to anyone expecting a large festival or English-language programmes, or to travelers on a tight schedule without a car.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm

  • No Hapcheon County notice or news report of the 2026 edition was found; dates, hours, theme and programme come from KTO's TourAPI listing (contentId 3019716, modified 13 Oct 2026). Whether the full programme runs all 24 days or only on certain days (in 2023 the core programme lasted three days) is unclear.
  • Whether the park opens on Mondays during the festival (it normally closes on Mondays) and whether 1 November follows the park's shorter November hours (09:00–17:00).
  • 2026 ticket and workshop prices: Hapcheon County's listing (ministry and KTO) says only that entry is paid and experience fees are separate; whether the park's standard rates in KTO data apply, and any online discount (20% in 2024), was not published.
  • Whether Daegu–Haeinsa intercity buses stop at the theme park in either direction was not confirmed; bus times are from a third-party mirror of the national timetable feed (October 2026).
  • Last bus from Haeinsa to Daegu Seobu and last KTX from Dongdaegu to Seoul on the festival dates under the timetables in force that day (a new KTX timetable starts on 1 Nov 2026, the festival's last day); the times were seen only on third-party mirrors.
  • Accessibility, rain policy, pets, card payment and crowd levels were not published.
  • Which Haeinsa visiting hours apply in late October (08:30–18:00 summer or 08:30–17:00 winter); seen only on travel blogs, the temple's own site was not opened.
  • Sori-gil length (about 6 km per KTO, 7.3 km per Financial News), and taxi availability and fare between the theme park and Haeinsa.
