What it is like

Geoje City has held this festival every autumn since 2006, when it began as an autumn flower exhibition. It fills the lawns, greenhouses and demonstration fields of the city's Agricultural Development Center in Geoje-myeon, about 14 ha in all, and spills into the Geoje Botanical Garden next door, whose Jungle Dome glass greenhouse is the area's year-round draw. The 2025 edition, the 19th, had more than 30,000 chrysanthemum plants, over 100 large chrysanthemum sculptures (dolphins and sailfish among them), more than 300 chrysanthemum bonsai in the big greenhouse, marigold beds and themed gardens. Around them ran a stage programme, farm activities such as digging sweet potatoes and peanuts, pony rides, and a lit 'light garden' from 18:00 to 20:00. Entry and parking were free. About 300,000 people came over 16 days: about 236,000 during the nine-day main festival (1–9 November) and about 65,000 in the self-guided week that followed.

There is no festival in 2026. From 15 August 2026 Geoje recorded 956.1 mm of rain. The whole festival site was submerged, with water reaching about 2.5 m in some buildings. The chrysanthemum sculptures were damaged and about 24,000 chrysanthemum plants grown for the displays were lost. On 19 August the city cancelled the 20th edition, which had been planned for 30 October–8 November. It was the first time the festival was called off because of a natural disaster; the only other year without one was 2021. The city says the festival will come back in 2027, but it has not announced dates.

The Botanical Garden was flooded too. It reopened on 18 September 2026 and has run normally since 23 September (09:30–18:00, last entry 17:00, closed Wednesdays, ₩5,000 for adults). So Geoje-myeon still has its tropical dome to visit this autumn, though not the festival's chrysanthemum displays.

Caveats for future editions: Geoje is far from Seoul (more than four hours by bus each way, and no train), the programme is in Korean, and the blooms depend on the weather. In 2024 a warm autumn delayed them, and the sculptures stayed up for viewing until 17 November.

Highlights

  • More than 100 large chrysanthemum sculptures on the Agricultural Development Center's lawn plaza, among more than 30,000 chrysanthemum plants on about 14 ha (2025)
  • Over 300 chrysanthemum bonsai in the large greenhouse in 2025 (more than 400 in the Cultural Arts Exhibition Hall in 2024)
  • Free entry and parking; in 2025 the grounds stayed open until 20:00, with a lit 'light garden' from 18:00 to 20:00
  • Geoje Botanical Garden's Jungle Dome next door: a 30 m-high glass dome of 7,472 panes over 4,468 m², with about 10,000 plants of some 300 tropical species (₩5,000 adults)
  • Farm and family activities: digging sweet potatoes and peanuts, pony rides, an insect ecology centre, terrarium and pressed-flower crafts
  • Stage programme with the Geoje magistrate's arrival procession, a youth K-pop festival, a national acoustic guitar contest and traditional ssireum wrestling (2025)
  • About a week of free self-guided viewing after the main festival (10–16 Nov 2025; until 17 Nov in 2024)

Who it suits. Best for families, garden lovers and photographers already travelling around Busan or the south coast who want a free day among chrysanthemum sculptures, with the Jungle Dome next door. Less suited to a day trip from Seoul (more than four hours by bus each way) or to visitors who need English-language programmes. Not an option in 2026: the festival was cancelled after the August floods.

Getting there

From Seoul

No train runs to Geoje. Take an intercity bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Gohyeon Bus Terminal in Geoje: about 20 departures a day, about 4 h 19 m, ₩44,400 (superior) or ₩53,800 (premium). Dong Seoul Terminal has 4 a day (about 4 h 41 m, ₩47,400). Alternatively, take the KTX to Busan Station (₩54,400 standard), the Busan Metro to Sasang (Line 1 to Seomyeon, then Line 2) and an intercity bus from Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal to Gohyeon (about 1 h 05 m–1 h 25 m, ₩9,000). From Gohyeon, city bus 50-2 runs direct to the Agricultural Development Center's main gate; during the 2025 festival, shuttle buses also ran from Gohyeon Bus Terminal.

From Busan

Intercity bus from Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal, next to Metro Line 2 Sasang Station, to Gohyeon Bus Terminal: about 40 a day, about 1 h 05 m–1 h 25 m, ₩9,000 (₩10,800 late at night). The road crosses the 8.2 km Busan–Geoje Fixed Link (Geoga Bridge), opened in 2010. Then take city bus 50-2 to the festival grounds. Gohyeon also has buses to Busan Central Bus Terminal (Geumjeong-gu) and Gimhae Airport.

From Incheon Airport

Gohyeon Bus Terminal has direct intercity buses to and from Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2 (timetable not checked). Otherwise take AREX to Seoul and a bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal, or fly to Gimhae Airport (Busan), which also has buses to Gohyeon.

Last leg from Gohyeon Bus Terminal (no railway on Geoje)

Intercity buses from Seoul Nambu, Dong Seoul and Busan Seobu (Sasang). Not walkable; city bus 50-2 runs direct to the Agricultural Development Center's main gate (buses 71 and 71-1 pass the Botanical Garden)

Festival shuttle

2025: festival shuttle buses ran between Gohyeon Bus Terminal and the Agricultural Development Center, and an 'island and flower tour' bus linked the grounds and the Botanical Garden. Free weekend shuttles ran 09:00–18:00 from outlying car parks: Mullyangjang (물량장) to the Sports Park every 30 minutes, Jeil High School to the Sports Park every 20 minutes, and Oegan Elementary School to the microbial culture lab every 30 minutes. No shuttles in 2026 (festival cancelled).

Getting home

Geoje has no railway. Buses from Gohyeon run back to Seoul Nambu (about 4 h 30 m), Dong Seoul (about 4 h 45 m) and Busan Sasang (about 1 h 15 m); in autumn 2026 there were also late-night buses to Seoul Nambu. If you are connecting to a KTX at Busan Station, allow time for the bus and the metro across Busan. The 2025 grounds closed at 20:00, so after the night lights the realistic options are a night bus to Seoul, if one runs, or an overnight stay. Check the last bus at Gohyeon Bus Terminal and the last train in the Korail app (코레일+) before the festival day.

Parking

Free in 2025. Car parks at the Agricultural Development Center and the Botanical Garden, plus temporary lots at Geoje-myeon Sports Park and the Botanical Garden's second lot linked by shuttle; parking open 09:00–21:00, with traffic staff on busy weekends. For satnav, enter 거제시 농업개발원 (거제남서로 3577).

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm

  • 2027 dates (and whether 2027 will be numbered the 20th edition) not announced as of 18 Oct 2026; the official festival site geoje.go.kr/flower blocks automated fetching, so the organizer's own notices were read only through news reports and city PDFs.
  • Whether the flood-damaged greenhouses, Nongsim Theme Park, insect centre and agricultural science hall at the Agricultural Development Center have been repaired, and whether 2027 keeps free entry, 10:00–20:00 hours and the 2025 shuttle routes.
  • Frequency and journey time of city bus 50-2 from Gohyeon Bus Terminal, taxi time and fare, and the exact locations of the 2025 shuttle stops (Mullyangjang, Jeil High School, Oegan Elementary School).
  • Japanese and Chinese names: no KTO foreign-language listing was found before the search budget ran out.
  • Jungle Tower prices and opening hours were not found.
  • Opening time in 2024 (only the 20:00 close is reported) and admission in 2022–2023 (city PDFs show no event revenue, suggesting free entry, but do not say so).
  • Busan–Gohyeon fares differ by direction in the timetable mirror (₩9,000 outbound, ₩9,900 return); not checked against the operator.
  • Incheon Airport and Gimhae Airport bus timetables to Gohyeon were not checked.
  • Bus frequencies and journey times are weekday figures from a third-party mirror of the national timetable feed (October 2026); the KTX fare is copied from another record checked on 16 Oct 2026, and a new KTX timetable starts on 1 Nov 2026.
  • Restrooms, accessibility, pets and rain policy were not published in the sources read; distances to the nearby sights other than the Botanical Garden and Geoje Hyanggyo were not checked.
  • Last buses back from Gohyeon (to Seoul Nambu, Dong Seoul and Busan Sasang) and the last KTX from Busan Station on the 2027 festival dates under the timetables in force then.

Changes: 2026-10-18 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-18 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-20 — Bus class clarified: the ₩53,300 22:00 Seoul Nambu–Gohyeon bus is a late-night deluxe (우등) fare. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the October 2026 bus and KTX clock times, which cannot be relied on for the 2027 festival; journey times, frequencies and fares kept, with a reminder to check the last bus and train before the festival day.
