Dates30 Oct – 1 Nov 2026Happening now · Held jointly with the 2026 Yecheon Agricultural Festival (theme 'Abundant harvest! Yecheon, the best of K-produce!', run by its own organizing committee) and alongside the Gyeongbuk Lifelong Learning Expo. Foot-and-mouth disease: Yecheon had Gyeongbuk's first outbreak in 11 years on 3 July 2026, a recurrence at two cattle farms on 3 September and 10 more positive cattle on 3 October (9 of the 14 cases in Korea in 2026), and neighbouring Mungyeong scaled its 9–11 October beef festival down to a market. KTO's listing (updated 13 October) and the county's 14 October announcement of the agricultural festival still gave the full 30 October–1 November dates, with no scale-down reported. The agriculture ministry's notice on the 3 October case set out farm quarantine, disinfection in Yecheon and six neighbouring areas and a nationwide disinfection week (4–10 October), with no limits on public events; no change to the festival had been reported by 19 October.

What it is like

Yecheon, a farming county in the north of Gyeongsangbuk-do, presents itself as the home of the bow. Three of Korea's best-known archers, Kim Jin-ho, Yun Ok-hee and Kim Je-deok, were born there, and the bow maker Kim Seong-rak, a national intangible heritage holder, demonstrated his craft at the 2025 festival. The event began in October 2014 as the Yecheon World Bow Festival, billed as Korea's first festival built around archery, and returned in 2015, 2017 and 2019, when archers from 24 countries took part. After a four-year break caused by COVID-19 it came back as the Yecheon Bow Festival in May 2023 and May 2024, then moved to the end of October in 2025, when it was combined with the county's agricultural festival.

The point is to shoot. KTO's 2026 listing describes archery sessions in both Western archery and gukgung (traditional Korean archery), and a bow siege battle (활공성전) in which teams take on an opposing camp. Children get suction-cup bows, make-your-own-bow tables, air hover ball and gong targets, plus a bow playground with inflatables, rides and sand and cypress-chip play areas. Street characters, bubble shows and a food zone fill out the grounds. Recent editions also had a bow exhibition hall, AR and VR archery, fireworks, a national song contest and a youth dance contest.

On the same grounds and days, the Yecheon Agricultural Festival runs 22 direct-sales booths from the county's towns and producer groups, a cooking contest, on-the-spot produce auctions, an OX quiz, and halls for certified produce and for processed goods such as sesame oil and traditional liquor, with tastings. The Gyeongbuk Lifelong Learning Expo is held alongside.

The honest caveats: Yecheon had Gyeongbuk's first foot-and-mouth outbreak in 11 years on 3 July 2026, with further cases on 3 September and 3 October, and neighbouring Mungyeong cut its October beef festival back to a market. No change to the Yecheon festival had been reported by 19 October, and the agriculture ministry's measures after the 3 October case covered farms rather than public events, but check before you travel. The programme is in Korean and aimed at local families. There is no fast train: buses from Dong Seoul take about 2 h 40 m, and the last bus back leaves Yecheon in the early evening, long before the festival closes at 21:00. Entry is free, but 2026 fees for individual activities were not published; in 2024 an activity pass cost ₩7,000, with ₩5,000 returned as a local gift voucher.

Highlights

  • Western archery and gukgung (traditional Korean archery) sessions in the home county of archers Kim Jin-ho, Yun Ok-hee and Kim Je-deok
  • Bow siege battle (활공성전), a team archery game against an opposing camp; 32 teams a day played it in 2024
  • Children's bow zone: suction-cup bows, make-your-own bow, air hover ball and gong targets, plus inflatables, rides and sand and cypress-chip play
  • Free entry, 10:00–21:00 daily, Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026 (KTO listing)
  • Yecheon Agricultural Festival on the same grounds: 22 direct-sales booths, produce auctions, a cooking contest and tastings of local sesame oil and traditional liquor
  • In 2025: a bow exhibition hall, bow-making by heritage bow maker Kim Seong-rak, AR archery, an evening concert and fireworks on the opening night
  • Fireworks on Friday 30 October at 21:00 after a concert by Jang Min-ho, Ailee on Saturday evening, and a Black Eagles aerobatic display on Sunday 1 November at 14:00 (official timetable)

Who it suits. Families with children and anyone who wants to try archery, modern or traditional, in a relaxed small-town setting, ideally with a night in Yecheon or nearby Andong. Less suited to travellers who need English-language programmes or a quick day trip from Seoul, since the last bus back to Dong Seoul leaves in the early evening.

Getting there

From Seoul

Intercity bus between Dong Seoul Terminal and the Yecheon intercity bus stop (예천시외버스정류장) in Yecheon-eup, the county town where the festival is held: deluxe buses take 2 h 38 m (₩26,800), with about six a day from Yecheon to Dong Seoul in October 2026; the Dong Seoul → Yecheon departure times were not checked for this record. Alternatively, take the KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni to Andong (about 1 h 52 m–2 h 05 m, ₩27,700, about 13 trains a day) and continue by bus or taxi; only 2 intercity buses a day are listed between Yecheon and Andong Terminal (34 minutes, ₩6,300). From the Yecheon bus terminal it is about 1 km, 15 minutes on foot, to the festival grounds (official festival page). Yecheon Station on the Gyeongbuk Line is a 10-minute walk from the grounds (official page); its train services were not checked.

From Busan

Intercity bus between Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo) and Yecheon: only 2 deluxe buses a day are listed from Yecheon to Busan (2 h 44 m, ₩26,700), so check the times at the terminal before you travel. The Busan → Yecheon times were not checked.

Getting home

The festival runs until 21:00. There is no direct fast train: the last intercity bus from Yecheon to Dong Seoul leaves in the early evening, hours before closing, and only two buses a day run from Yecheon to Andong Terminal, next to Andong Station (KTX-Eum to Cheongnyangni). These times were not checked against the operators' timetables for the festival dates, and a new Korail timetable starts on 1 November 2026, the festival's last day, so check the last bus at the Yecheon bus stop and the last train in the Korail app (코레일+) before the festival day. An evening visit means staying overnight or driving.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask

When is the Yecheon Bow Festival 2026?

Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, 10:00–21:00, at Hancheon Sports Park in Yecheon-eup, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The Yecheon Agricultural Festival runs on the same grounds on the same days, and the Gyeongbuk Lifelong Learning Expo is held alongside.

Is the festival affected by foot-and-mouth disease in Yecheon?

Not as of 19 October 2026. Yecheon had outbreaks on 3 July, 3 September and 3 October 2026, and neighbouring Mungyeong scaled its October beef festival down to a market, but KTO's listing (updated 13 October) and the county's 14 October announcement still gave the full 30 October–1 November dates. The agriculture ministry's measures after the 3 October case covered farms and disinfection, with no limits on public events. Check the festival page or call 054-650-6045 before you travel.

Is the Yecheon Bow Festival free?

Entry is free. Some activities may cost money: past editions charged a small activity fee, part of which came back as a local gift voucher. 2026 fees were not in the county's 20 October 2026 announcement, so check on site.

Can I try archery?

Yes, that is the point. KTO's 2026 listing describes Western archery and gukgung (traditional Korean archery) sessions, a team bow siege battle, and children's games with suction-cup bows, a make-your-own-bow table and gong targets. Outside festival days, the Yecheon Archery Experience Centre runs sessions year-round (booking required).

How do I get to Yecheon from Seoul?

By intercity bus between Dong Seoul Terminal and Yecheon: about 2 h 38 m, ₩26,800 on a deluxe bus, with about six buses a day back to Dong Seoul, the last in the early evening (check the time at the Yecheon bus stop before the festival day). Or take the KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni to Andong (about 1 h 52 m–2 h 05 m, ₩27,700) and continue by bus or taxi; check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+).

Why is Yecheon known for bows?

Archers Kim Jin-ho, Yun Ok-hee and Olympic champion Kim Je-deok were born in Yecheon, and the national intangible heritage bow maker Kim Seong-rak demonstrated his craft at the 2025 festival. The county launched Korea's first archery-themed festival in 2014.
