What it is like
Mokpo was one of Korea's first open ports, and the grid of streets below Yudalsan still has the brick and stone buildings of the early 20th century: the former Japanese consulate (now Modern History Museum 1, finished in 1898), the 1920 Oriental Development Company branch (Museum 2), Gyeongdong Cathedral, the old Simsang Elementary School building and the site of the Joseon-era naval fort Mokpo-jin. The district was registered as national cultural heritage in 2018, and the city has held a heritage night there every year since then, with yearly funding from the Korea Heritage Service's heritage-use programme. The festival is laid out as eight 'nights' (야경 night views, 야화 night art, 야로 night walks, 야시 night market, 야설 night performances, 야식 night food, 야사 night history and 야숙 night stay). In practice that means lighting and media art on the old buildings, guided heritage walks and a children's trail, a costume parade, concerts in the heritage buildings, craft and flea-market stalls, food trucks, and an overnight 'Yahaeng Stay'. The 2026 subtitle is 'Modern Times, Mokpo Port-Opening Story 129'. The number counts the years since 1897, when Mokpo became the first port the Korean Empire opened on its own initiative. Expect an opening street drama on that theme. Honest caveats: the city had not published a timetable of individual sessions by 18 October 2026, and the programmes run in Korean. The district is compact enough to walk, but it slopes up toward Yudalsan. Mokpo is 2½–3 hours from Seoul by KTX and the programme runs until 22:00, so plan to stay the night. The event shares a city, but not a venue, with the Mokpo Harbor Festival, which ran at the port and Samhakdo on 16–18 October 2026.
Highlights
- Eight themed 'nights' of programmes spread across the old-town heritage buildings, 18:00–22:00 on Friday 30 October, Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November 2026
- Night views: lighting and modern-history media art on the colonial-era buildings, a heritage walk and the 'Manho Salon'
- Time Lord Parade through the old streets, a historic-street walking tour and a children's exploration trail
- Concerts in heritage settings: a jazz concert at a heritage site, a showcase of Namdo singers, moonlight busking and a starlit orchestra and vocal ensemble (in 2024 the jazz was at Gyeongdong Cathedral)
- Hands-on stalls: modern Gyeongseong-era costume try-on, jade-craft exhibition with commentary, stamp carving, upcycling workshop and a flea market
- Gourmet food-truck night market, Mokpo evening drinks and a Mokpo food trail
- Modern History Museum 2 (1920) sits at the centre of the festival area, and Museum 1 (1898), the city's oldest building, is about 180 m away
Who it suits. Best for travelers interested in Korea's port-opening and colonial-era history, for photographers who want lit-up old buildings, and for anyone already staying in Mokpo or touring the southwest coast. Less suited to a same-day trip from Seoul, because the programme runs until 22:00 and Mokpo is 2.5–3 hours from Seoul by KTX, or to visitors who need English-language tours.
Getting there
From Seoul
Take a KTX from Yongsan Station to Mokpo Station, where the KTX line ends. Most trains take about 2 h 23 m–2 h 50 m and cost ₩48,000 in standard class (since the 1 September 2026 merger, former SRT trains also run as KTX). From Mokpo Station it is about 15 minutes on foot to the Modern History Museum area. You can also take bus 60, 2 or 13-1 for about 7 minutes to the Yudalsan Post Office stop. Slower ITX-Saemaeul and ITX-Maeum trains take about 4 h 33 m–5 h 26 m for ₩39,600.
From Busan
Saemaeul trains run between Busan (Bujeon) and Mokpo on the Mokpo–Boseong line, which opened on 27 September 2025, and take about 4 h 40 m. Then walk about 15 minutes from Mokpo Station.
Last leg from Mokpo Station
Korail Honam Line (KTX terminus). About 15 minutes on foot to the Modern History Museum area; or buses 60, 2 and 13-1 to the Yudalsan Post Office stop (about 7 minutes)
Getting home
The programme runs 18:00–22:00 each evening. A new KTX timetable takes effect on 1 November 2026, the festival's last day, and last-train times for the festival dates were not verified, so check the last train from Mokpo to Yongsan in the Korail app (코레일+) or at Mokpo Station before the festival day. Allow 15 minutes to walk back to Mokpo Station, or stay overnight in Mokpo.
Parking
No festival parking was published. The Modern History Museum 2 car park is listed as open 09:00–17:30 (closed Mondays), so it may not be available for the evening programme.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
