What it is like
On Saturday afternoons from spring to autumn, a troupe of folk performers parades down Taejo-ro, the main street of Jeonju Hanok Village, from Namcheongyo Bridge to the front of Gyeonggijeon, the shrine built for the portrait of the founder of the Joseon dynasty. At the head of the procession go the huge dragon banners of Jeonju Gijeop-nori, a banner game listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Jeonbuk and one of the city's symbols, followed by pungmul drums and gongs. Anyone can fall in behind and walk with it.
The parade lasts about an hour, in three parts. It sets off from Namcheongyo with the banners and drumming; along the street the performers stop for short comic madang plays, which bystanders help finish by joining dure games, the games of the old village work teams; and it ends in front of Gyeonggijeon with a communal play, the dragon-banner routine and other traditional skills. Visitors can also learn Mandure-sori, a Jeonju farming work song passed down by word of mouth. Around holidays the troupe adds special shows: at Chuseok 2025 it staged a 'Hanok Village Dure Olympics' on 3, 4 and 8 October, with teams of spectators formed on the spot for straw-bag tossing and plate spinning.
The parade is one of the shows of Nosang Noriya (노상놀이야, roughly 'let's play in the street'), the street-theatre festival of the Jeonbuk State Culture and Tourism Foundation, which has put weekly parades into tourist sites around the province since 2017. Jeonju's is run by Hapgut Village (합굿마을), a social-enterprise cooperative of traditional performers, with Jeonju City and the foundation as hosts. The 2026 season runs from 18 April to 31 October, every Saturday from 15:00 to 16:00, and watching or joining is free.
The honest caveats: it is one hour, once a week, outdoors, and the published detail is little more than the KTO listing, with no rain plan or English commentary announced. Each season depends on the foundation's yearly open call, so the 2027 season is not yet confirmed. Jeonju Station is across town from the village, and taxis there can be hard to find at weekends.
Highlights
- Giant dragon banners of Jeonju Gijeop-nori, a Jeonbuk intangible cultural heritage, leading the procession with pungmul drumming
- Short comic madang plays along Taejo-ro that the audience helps finish through old dure (village work-team) games
- Closing communal play in front of Gyeonggijeon Shrine, with the dragon-banner routine and traditional skills
- A chance to learn Mandure-sori, a Jeonju farming work song passed down by word of mouth
- Free and open to all: anyone can join the procession at the start at Namcheongyo Bridge
- Every Saturday 15:00–16:00 from 18 April to 31 October 2026, about 60 minutes
Who it suits. Best for visitors already in Jeonju Hanok Village on a Saturday afternoon, families and anyone who likes to join in rather than just watch; less suited to travellers looking for a full festival day, since it is a single one-hour show once a week.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan Station to Jeonju Station (about 1 h 40 m, fastest 1 h 26 m; ₩31,600 standard class on the fare table in force since 1 September 2026), then city bus 79 or a 500-series bus to Jeonju Hanok Village, about 15 minutes, or a taxi; taxis at the station can be scarce at weekends. Express buses from Seoul take about 2 h 30 m to the Jeonju bus terminals.
From Busan
Express bus from Busan to Jeonju, about 3 h 20 m, roughly hourly, then a city bus or taxi to the Hanok Village.
From Incheon Airport
Airport limousine bus to Jeonju, about 3 h 30 m, roughly every 30 minutes, stopping near Jeonju City Hall; then a taxi or city bus to the Hanok Village.
Last leg from Jeonju Station
KTX / Jeolla Line. Not walkable; take city bus 79 or a 500-series bus to Jeonju Hanok Village (about 15 minutes) or a taxi
Getting home
The parade ends at about 16:00, so a day trip is easy. The KTX from Jeonju back to Yongsan takes about 1 h 40 m, but last-train times for 24 and 31 October were not checked against Korail's timetable for those dates: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at Jeonju Station before you go, and allow about 15 minutes by bus or taxi from the Hanok Village to the station.
Parking
Public car parks around the Hanok Village charge by time parked; no parking plan is published for the parade.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
A red-and-grey brick cathedral finished in 1914 to a design by Father Poisnel of Myeongdong Cathedral, the first Romanesque building in the Honam region, raised to honour Catholics executed near Pungnammun Gate in 1791 and 1801. It is open 09:00–17:00 every day and free, so go straight after the 16:00 finale and you have about an hour inside before it closes. Photography inside the church is not allowed.
Getting there: On foot across Taejo-ro from the finale at Gyeonggijeon, about 77 m (KTO); free
The walled shrine that holds the portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty, with the Royal Portrait Museum in its grounds. In September and October it is open 09:00–19:00 with last entry at 18:00 (adult ₩3,000, museum included), so walk in after the finale or after the cathedral. The main hall is being repainted until 17 December 2026 and its inner gate is closed; the rest of the grounds and the museum stay open.
Getting there: On foot: the parade's closing play is held in front of its gate (44 Taejo-ro)
Jeonju's main traditional market beside Pungnammun Gate, whose alleys fill with food stalls on Friday and Saturday evenings: grilled skewers, pancakes, fried snacks and desserts. The parade is on Saturdays, so walk over for dinner after Gyeonggijeon. Visit Jeonju lists 17:00–23:00 but a March 2026 report gave 19:00–24:00, so stalls may still be setting up before 19:00. Going back to Seoul the same night, check the last train first and allow for the ride to Jeonju Station.
Getting there: On foot to Pungnammun Gate at the west edge of the Hanok Village, within about 1 km of Jeondong Cathedral (KTO); free to walk in
Jeonju's free two-night rice-wine festival, where local breweries and houses from the Samcheon-dong Makgeolli Alley pour makgeolli with side dishes, with a stage and a retro DJ party. It runs only on 23–24 October 2026, 15:00–22:00, so on Saturday 24 October you can watch the parade and take a taxi there for the evening; drinks and food are paid at the booths. See our Jeonju Makgeolli Festival page.
Getting there: Taxi across the city to Jeonju Vision University in Hyoja-dong; ride time not checked
