Winter festivals in Korea

Winter festivals are about ice, snow and light. Hwacheon, Hongcheon and Pyeongchang put visitors on frozen rivers to fish for trout, snow sculptures and sled runs go up at Daegwallyeong in Pyeongchang and in Taebaeksan National Park, and in Cheongyang the Chilgapsan Ice Fountain Festival freezes giant fountains. The cities light up from mid-November or December into the new year: lanterns along Cheonggyecheon, a Christmas market on Gwanghwamun Square and media art on the façade of Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, and the Haeundae Light Festival and the Gwangbok-ro light trees in Busan. At Christmas, Daegu lights Suseongmot Lake and Damyang holds a Santa parade; on New Year's Eve, crowds wait for the first sunrise at Jeongdongjin and Homigot. The Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong stays lit from December to March, and in February or early March Haeundae burns a moon house on the beach for Jeongwol Daeboreum and Gangjin holds its celadon festival.
