The Haeundae Dalmaji Hot Spring Festival (해운대달맞이온천축제) is Haeundae's Jeongwol Daeboreum festival: on the first full moon of the lunar year, a large pine moon house (daljip) hung with people's wishes is set alight on Haeundae Beach in Busan at the minute of moonrise, after an afternoon of folk dance and rituals. The 41st edition was on 3 March 2026, with the burning at 18:11. The next is expected on Sunday 21 February 2027, Daeboreum in the KASI calendar, though Haeundae-gu has not announced it. Entry is free; take Busan Metro Line 2 to Haeundae Station, Exit 3 or 5.

What it is like

Jeongwol Daeboreum, the first full moon of the lunar year, is when Korean villages have long built a daljip, or 'moon house', a tall stack of branches and poles hung with written wishes, and burned it as the moon rose to send off the year's bad luck and pray for a good harvest and good health. Haeundae turns the custom into a beach festival, the Haeundae Dalmaji Hot Spring Festival, named for greeting the moon (dalmaji) and for the hot springs the district is known for. The 41st edition was held on 3 March 2026. Counting back from the 28th in 2010 and the 32nd in 2014 puts the first in 1983, and the count skips three years: the 2023 edition was billed as the first held in person in four years.

From two days before the festival, anyone can write a wish and tie it to the moon house on the sand; in 2025 this ran around the clock. On the day the programme starts in the afternoon with a moon-house karaoke stage open to anyone (15:00 in 2025, 16:00 in 2026). It continues with a Taepyeongmu dance on the legend of Silla's Queen Jinseong, said to have been cured of a skin disease by bathing in Haeundae's hot springs, then a moon ritual and a New Year dance. The moon house is lit at moonrise: 17:20 in 2023, 17:58 in 2024, 17:42 in 2025 and 18:11 in 2026. After the fire come folk songs and dances and ganggangsullae, the circle dance under the full moon, performed by the Haeundae Dongbaek troupe, described as the only ganggangsullae troupe in the Yeongnam region. In 2023 the moon house was a five-storey pine structure that also carried banners for Busan's World Expo bid.

It is an easy event to fit into a Busan trip: free, on the open beach a few minutes' walk from Haeundae Station, and over by about 19:30. Expect a dense, mostly local crowd around the fire (organizers expected tens of thousands in 2023), smoke drifting downwind and stage events in Korean only.

Fire and weather: the burning is outdoors in the driest season. On Daeboreum 2026 some local governments elsewhere cancelled or scaled back their burnings over wildfire risk, and Gyeongsangnam-do asked its cities and counties not to hold them. Haeundae's burning on the sand went ahead in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and we found no report of it being called off for wind or dry weather. Other Busan districts have changed theirs: Nam-gu has used an LED moon house since 2023, and in 2025 Seo-gu cut Songdo Beach's moon house to a third of its size after a small explosion the year before. A strong-wind or dry-weather warning on the day could still delay or cancel the fire, so check Haeundae-gu's notices before you go.

Who it suits. Best for travellers in Busan in February or early March who want to see a living folk custom in a big, open setting, and for anyone who likes fire and full moons; less suited to people who dislike smoke and tight crowds, or who want a programme in English.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station, about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger). Then take Busan Metro Line 1 to Seomyeon and change to Line 2 for Haeundae Station, about an hour in all; leave by Exit 3 or 5 and walk about 5 minutes down Gunam-ro to the beach. Express buses 1001 and 1003 also run from Busan Station to Haeundae.

From Busan

Busan Metro Line 2 to Haeundae Station, Exit 3 or 5; Gunam-ro (Haeundae Square) leads to the beach in about 5 minutes on foot. From Busan Station, take Line 1 to Seomyeon and change to Line 2 (about an hour). City buses 38, 39, 40, 63, 141, 200, 1001 and 1003 stop at Haeundae Beach.

From Incheon Airport

Domestic flight from Incheon to Gimhae (Busan), then the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang and Metro Line 2 east to Haeundae, about 1 h 20 m from the airport. Airport bus Line 1 also serves Haeundae. Or take AREX to Seoul Station and the KTX to Busan Station, then the metro via Seomyeon.

Last leg from Haeundae Station

Busan Metro Line 2, Exit 3 or 5. About 5 minutes on foot down Gunam-ro (Haeundae Square) to the beach

Getting home

The programme ended at 19:10 in 2025 and 19:20 in 2026. Allow about an hour from Haeundae to Busan Station on the metro (change at Seomyeon); the KTX to Seoul Station takes about 2 h 30 m. The timetable for 21 February 2027 has not been checked, and it is a Sunday: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before the festival day and book the return early.

Parking

No festival car park was documented. The Haeundae Plaza public car park charges a few hundred won per 10 minutes, more at weekends (Telltrip); Busan city lists paid parking at the beach. Expect roads near the beach to be congested around the burning; the metro is easier.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask

When is the Haeundae moon-house burning in 2027?

Expected on Sunday 21 February 2027, which is Jeongwol Daeboreum in the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute's calendar. The festival has been held on Daeboreum itself every year, with the burning at moonrise, but Haeundae-gu had not announced the 2027 programme as of 19 October 2026.

What time is the moon house lit?

At moonrise: 17:20 in 2023, 17:58 in 2024, 17:42 in 2025 and 18:11 in 2026. The stage programme starts in the afternoon (15:00 in 2025, 16:00 in 2026) and the day ended at 19:10 in 2025 and 19:20 in 2026.

Is it free?

Yes. It is on the open beach with no ticket or gate, and Busan city lists the 2024 and 2025 editions as free admission.

Can the burning be cancelled for wind or dry weather?

It could be, though it has not happened recently: Haeundae's beach burning went ahead in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and we found no report of it being called off for weather. On Daeboreum 2026 some local governments elsewhere cancelled or scaled back burnings over wildfire risk. Check Haeundae-gu's notices on the day if a strong-wind or dry-weather warning is in force.

Can I write a wish for the moon house?

Yes. Wish-writing opens at the moon house on the beach two days before the festival (24 hours a day from 10 to 12 February in 2025), and the wishes burn with the moon house at moonrise.

Which subway station and exit should I use?

Haeundae Station on Busan Metro Line 2, Exit 3 or 5, then about 5 minutes on foot down Gunam-ro to the beach.

Can I see it on a day trip from Seoul?

It can be: the KTX to Busan Station takes about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class) and the metro to Haeundae about an hour more, and the festival ended by 19:20 in 2026. Check the last KTX from Busan Station to Seoul in the Korail+ app (코레일+) before the festival day and book the return early.

Why is it called a hot spring festival?

Dalmaji means greeting the moon, and Haeundae is known for its hot springs. The programme includes a dance on the legend of Silla's Queen Jinseong, said to have been cured of a skin disease by bathing in Haeundae's hot springs.

What is the weather like during Haeundae Dalmaji Hot Spring Festival?

February in Busan: average high 10 °C (50 °F), low 2 °C (35 °F), 50 mm of rain (Busan station, about 15 km away, KMA 1991–2020 normals). March in Busan: average high 14 °C (57 °F), low 5 °C (42 °F), 90 mm of rain (Busan station, about 15 km away, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Near or below freezing after dark: a warm coat and layers.

What we could not confirm

  • The 2027 programme had not been announced as of 19 October 2026; the date (Sunday 21 February 2027) comes from KASI's lunar calendar and the festival's practice of holding the burning on Daeboreum itself. Moonrise time in Busan on 21 February 2027 and the 2027 wish-writing dates were not checked.
  • firstHeld 1983 is worked out from the edition count (28th in 2010, 32nd in 2014, then 38th in 2023 after three missing years); no source opened states the first year. The 2023 edition was billed as the first in person in four years, so 2020–2022 were presumably not held in person; the reason was not stated in the sources opened.
  • Haeundae-gu's own notices and the organizer council's pages were not found by search or opened; dates and times rely on Busan city's Calendar of Events and news reports.
  • Organizer naming differs: 2023 and 2025 reports and Busan city's 2025 listing name the Haeundae District Development Council as host with Haeundae-gu as sponsor, while Busan city's 2026 listing and Busan Ilbo (2024) name Haeundae-gu Office.
  • Moon-house height and materials for 2024–2026 and its exact spot on the sand were not found (2023: a five-storey pine structure). Coordinates use KTO's point for the beach event area at 해운대해변로 280.
  • Admission for 2026 was not stated (free in 2024 and 2025); whether wish papers cost anything was not stated.
  • No visitor counts were found for 2024–2026; 'tens of thousands' was the organizers' expectation in 2023.
  • No report of a weather cancellation at Haeundae was found, and no rain or wind plan was published; how the organizer decides on a strong-wind or dry-weather warning day is unknown.
  • The festival is not in the site's TourAPI snapshot of 18 Oct 2026 and no KTO festival listing or contentId was found. No official Japanese or Chinese name was found; KTO's Japanese Haeundae Beach listing calls it 月見・温泉祭り, which the ja overlay follows.
  • Rail fare was carried over from the site's Busan Fireworks Festival record (Korail fare table of 1 Sep 2026). The Busan Station–Haeundae metro time (about 1 h) comes from a conference travel page.
  • The search budget (12 searches) was used up; Busan Ilbo, Kookje Shinmun and Yonhap reports after the 2026 event, and two Nate-hosted reports (blocked to automated reading), were not opened.
  • Last KTX from Busan Station to Seoul on Sunday 21 February 2027 under the timetable in force that day.
  • Sky Capsule hours (09:30–18:00 from November to February) come from travel guides, not the operator; the operator's own site was not found (see nearby-links). Fares were not taken from an official page and are not given.

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a Wikimedia Commons photograph of the moon house burning at the 2012 festival (히히히, CC BY-SA 3.0). · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the last-KTX times from the October 2026 timetable, which does not cover February 2027; journey times and fare kept, with a reminder to check the last train in the Korail+ app. · 2026-10-30 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: no train, bus or shuttle clock times remained, so none removed; prices: Haeundae Plaza parking fee given as a rounded figure without a year.
