What it is like
Daegwallyeong is the cold, windy highland of Pyeongchang County in Gangwon, and Hoenggye is its main town. In 1993 local young people started a snow festival there to bring visitors in during the quiet winter months, and a residents' festival committee still runs it, backed by Pyeongchang County and the Pyeongchang Tourism and Culture Foundation. The organizer bills it as the first winter festival created in Korea.
For about ten days, usually spanning the Lunar New Year holiday, the grounds beside the Songcheon stream fill with large snow and ice sculptures built around a yearly theme, a walk-through snow tunnel (about 100 m in 2024, 120 m in 2025), an ice café with ice tables and chairs, a snow sled run and ice slides, and simple hands-on games. In 2026 the theme followed the county mascot Nundongi training to join the national team at the Milan Cortina Olympics, with a mini-Olympics zone for cross-country skiing, laser biathlon shooting and curling, folk games such as tuho and yut nori, sheep feeding with Daegwallyeong Haneul Ranch and indoor crafts. The best-known side event is the Daegwallyeong Naked Marathon: about 450 runners in shorts ran 5 km or 10 km through the snow on 14 February 2026. Food comes from local stalls and an indoor hall, and there is an outdoor grill area for Daegwallyeong's dried pollack (hwangtae) and meat.
Admission was ₩10,000 for adults and ₩8,000 for children in 2026, with online presale discounts of up to 30% in early January; the sled costs ₩5,000 extra for five rides. The 2027 edition, numbered the 35th, is planned for 30 January to 9 February 2027.
Caveats: the site is compact (20,769 m² in 2026) and almost entirely outdoors in hard cold and wind; on its last day in 2026 the festival closed early because of strong wind. Strollers were not allowed on the snow in 2026 and pets had to stay in a carrier. Weekends and the Lunar New Year days are the busiest.
Highlights
- Large snow and ice sculptures on a yearly theme, plus a walk-through snow tunnel (about 100 m in 2024, 120 m in 2025)
- Snow sled run (₩5,000 for five rides in 2026, admission ticket required) and ice slides
- Mini-Olympics zone in 2026: cross-country skiing, laser biathlon shooting and curling, a nod to Pyeongchang's Olympic history
- Daegwallyeong Naked Marathon: 5 km and 10 km runs in shorts through the snow, about 450 runners on 14 February 2026
- Ice café with ice tables and chairs, an indoor food hall and an outdoor grill area for local hwangtae and meat
- Sheep feeding with Daegwallyeong Haneul Ranch, folk games (tuho, jegichagi, yut nori) and indoor crafts
Who it suits. Best for families with young children and anyone who wants an easy snow day of sculptures, sledding and Olympic-sport taster games on a bus or KTX day trip from Seoul, and for runners curious about the naked marathon; less suited to people who dislike hard cold and wind, visitors relying on a stroller or wheelchair on snow, or anyone expecting a large-scale ice-sculpture show.
Getting there
From Seoul
Direct intercity bus from Dong Seoul Terminal to Hoenggye, 8 a day, about 2 h 11 m, ₩22,900 deluxe; or from Seoul Nambu Terminal, 3 a day, about 2 h 17 m, ₩24,100 (bus counts as listed in October 2026, when no Seoul Express Bus Terminal service to Hoenggye was listed). Hoenggye terminal is about a 10-minute walk from the grounds. By rail: KTX-Eum from Seoul Station to Jinbu (Odaesan), 9 a day, 1 h 31 m–1 h 51 m, ₩21,900 standard (October 2026 fare, after the 1 Sep 2026 KTX–SRT merger; book on Korail's site or the Korail+ app). The station is about 2 km from Jinbu town, which is about 16 minutes from Hoenggye by bus (₩1,900); a taxi is simpler. By car: Yeongdong Expressway to Daegwallyeong IC, about 5 minutes away.
Last leg from Jinbu (Odaesan) Station
Gangneung Line KTX-Eum (Gyeonggang line). Not walkable: the station is about 2 km outside Jinbu town; take a taxi, or go into town and catch a bus to Hoenggye terminal (about 16 minutes), then walk about 10 minutes
Festival shuttle
Kyongbuk Maeil reported a shuttle bus linked to KTX Jinbu Station during the 2026 festival, but the organizer published no route or timetable. Its directions give the regular route: Jinbu Station to Jinbu bus terminal, bus to Hoenggye terminal, then a 10-minute walk.
Getting home
The grounds close at about 17:00–17:30. In October 2026 buses ran from Hoenggye to Dong Seoul and Seoul Nambu, and KTX-Eum trains from Jinbu (Odaesan) to Seoul Station (about 1 h 31 m–1 h 51 m), but the timetables for the 2027 festival dates have not been checked. Check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station, and the last bus at the Hoenggye terminal, before the festival day. Local buses from Hoenggye to Jinbu take 16 minutes, and the station is about 2 km beyond Jinbu town, so a taxi is the quickest link. On Lunar New Year weekends book the return early.
Parking
Festival car parks 1–3 at Hoenggye-ri 302-1 (next to Hoenggye Elementary School), 310-2 and 713, about a 5-minute walk from the grounds; fee not published. The grounds are about 5 minutes' drive from Daegwallyeong IC on the Yeongdong Expressway.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
Pyeongchang's ice-fishing festival on the frozen Odaecheon in Jinbu: you fish for rainbow trout through holes in the ice and have your catch grilled or sliced as sashimi; see our Pyeongchang Trout Festival page. It usually runs from around New Year into late January or early February (09:00–17:00, tickets until 16:00 in 2026), so it overlaps the 30 January opening only if its 2027 run lasts that long; dates are not out yet. Jinbu is on the KTX route: fish in the morning, then go on to Hoenggye.
Getting there: Local bus between Hoenggye and Jinbu, about 16 minutes, ₩1,900; the grounds are on the Odaecheon in Jinbu
A highland cattle ranch on the Daegwallyeong plateau where a tractor-drawn wagon climbs through the snow to the Haneul-maru lookout over the wind turbines of the Baekdudaegan ridge; it ran the festival's sheep feeding in 2026. October–March 09:00–17:30 (tickets until 16:30); cows and sheep winter in barns, so the wagon and the view are the point. Go in the morning and reach the grounds by early afternoon; ride the wagon up rather than walk an hour in the cold. Adults ₩8,000, wagon ₩10,000.
Getting there: Taxi from Hoenggye or the festival grounds (journey time and fare not checked; no bus documented)
A free museum of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics on the site of the ceremonies stadium in Hoenggye, with exhibits on the Games, winter-sports VR and the Olympic cauldron outside. It opens 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30) and closes on Mondays and on Seollal day (7 February in 2027), so go before the festival or at midday rather than after the grounds close at 17:30. It was a checkpoint on the festival's 2026 stamp tour; free parking.
Getting there: 220 Olympic-ro in Hoenggye, the festival village; on foot or a short taxi ride (walking time not checked)
Questions travelers ask
When is the Daegwallyeong Snow Festival 2027?
The 35th edition is planned for Saturday 30 January to Tuesday 9 February 2027, 09:30–17:30, according to the organizer's vendor notice of 8 September 2026. It ends on the Seollal substitute holiday. A formal schedule notice and ticket prices had not appeared by 18 October 2026.
How much does the Daegwallyeong Snow Festival cost?
Entry is paid; 2027 prices had not been announced by 18 October 2026. Adults usually pay about ₩10,000 at the gate or about ₩7,000–9,000 with the online presale; children, Pyeongchang residents, seniors, registered disabled and national-merit holders pay about ₩5,000–8,000, and under-24-month-olds enter free. The snow sled costs about ₩5,000 on top of admission.
How do I get there from Seoul?
The simplest way is the direct bus from Dong Seoul Terminal to Hoenggye (8 a day, about 2 h 11 m, ₩22,900), then a 10-minute walk. By rail, take the KTX-Eum from Seoul Station to Jinbu (Odaesan) (about 1 h 40 m, ₩21,900), then a taxi, or a bus from Jinbu town (about 16 minutes).
Do I need to book in advance?
No, tickets are sold at the gate. Booking online in advance is cheaper: in 2026 the presale opened on 1 January, and the earlier you buy, the bigger the discount (adults about ₩7,000–9,000, against about ₩10,000 at the gate).
What is the naked marathon?
A 5 km or 10 km run in shorts and bare chests through the snow, organized by the local sports councils on the festival grounds. In 2026 it started at 10:00 on 14 February with about 450 runners; in 2024 it started at 11:00 on 28 January.
Can I bring a stroller or my dog?
In 2026 strollers were not allowed on the snow-covered grounds, and pets were admitted only inside a carrier, which they had to stay in.
What happens in strong wind or bad weather?
The festival can close early. On 22 February 2026, the last day, staff checked the wind hourly against a 14 m/s threshold and then closed early for safety; online ticket holders who could not enter were refunded via Yanolja.
Can I combine it with the Pyeongchang Trout Festival?
Often, yes. The trout festival is on the Odaecheon in Jinbu, 16 minutes by bus from Hoenggye and near the KTX station you pass through anyway. Their dates do not always overlap: in 2024 the trout festival ended on 28 January, the day after the snow festival opened. Check both pages before you go.
What is the weather like during Daegwallyeong Snow Festival?
January in Pyeongchang: average high −2 °C (29 °F), low −12 °C (10 °F), 53 mm of rain (Daegwallyeong (Pyeongchang) station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). February in Pyeongchang: average high 1 °C (33 °F), low −10 °C (14 °F), 49 mm of rain (Daegwallyeong (Pyeongchang) station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Well below freezing at night: a down coat, hat, gloves and thermal layers.

What we could not confirm
- 2027 dates (30 Jan–9 Feb) and hours (09:30–17:30) come from the organizer's vendor-recruitment notice and are marked 'planned'; a formal schedule notice (published on 29 Oct 2025 for 2026) and 2027 ticket prices had not appeared by 18 Oct 2026.
- The official notice board was read through a text-extraction tool (the site blocks direct downloads and its notices have no stable per-post URLs), so wording should be rechecked by hand.
- Edition numbering jumps from 31st (2025) to 34th (2026) and 35th (2027); 2023–2025 were numbered 29th–31st after the 2022 cancellation. The reason is not stated.
- Whether a festival shuttle from KTX Jinbu Station runs (one newspaper reported it in 2026), local bus times from Jinbu town to Hoenggye, and taxi fare from the station.
- Parking fee, restrooms, foreign-card acceptance, whether foreigners can use the Naver/Yanolja presale, and any English support.
- Japanese and Chinese names not verified; KTO's English listing was not located (only the Korean and German KTO data were opened).
- Last KTX-Eum from Jinbu (Odaesan) to Seoul and last bus from Hoenggye to Dong Seoul on the festival dates under the timetable in force that day; Korail posted a notice adjusting the last up KTX-Eum on the Gangneung Line on 21 Oct 2026.
- Nearby: taxi time and fare from Hoenggye to Haneul Ranch, walking route from the grounds to the Olympic Memorial Hall, and whether the 2027 Pyeongchang Trout Festival is still running on 30 January 2027.
