What it is like

The Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) is a private arboretum in Sang-myeon, Gapyeong, about 65 km north-east of Seoul, laid out over roughly 100,000 pyeong (about 330,000 m²) of hillside at the foot of Chungnyeongsan. It was designed by horticulture professor Han Sang-kyung and opened in May 1996, and now has about 20 themed gardens and some 5,000 plant species. Every winter the whole garden turns into the Five-Colour Starlight Garden Exhibition (오색별빛정원전): LED lights are strung through the themed gardens in what KTO calls Korea's first festival to pair a natural landscape with light. The 19th edition ran for 101 days, from 5 December 2025 to 15 March 2026. The displays change each season. In 2025–26 the sunken Hagyeong Garden, laid out in the shape of the Korean Peninsula, was traced in light and Morning Square was filled with blue LEDs, dolphins and sailboats; in 2023–24 the zones were themed on love, animals and plants and included a light tunnel. There are no stage shows: the visit is a slow walk along lit paths, and most people allow two to three hours. In winter the garden opens at 10:00; the lights come on at sunset, about 17:00, and stay on until 21:00, or 23:00 on Saturdays. The ordinary garden ticket covers the lights, so you can arrive in daylight and stay on into the evening. Things to know: December–February evenings are well below freezing; some paths climb; and the garden is not on a railway line. Most visitors without a car take ITX-Cheongchun to Cheongpyeong Station and a short taxi ride. Local buses are infrequent and thin out in the evening, so plan the trip back before the lights go off. The free car park gets very busy on festival evenings. Outside winter the garden runs other seasonal shows, such as a chrysanthemum exhibition in October and November.

Highlights

  • LED light displays through about 20 themed gardens on 100,000 pyeong of hillside, lit every day for about 100 days from early December to mid-March
  • Lights from sunset (about 17:00) to 21:00, and to 23:00 on Saturdays; the garden opens at 10:00 in winter, so one ticket covers daylight and lights
  • The sunken Hagyeong Garden, shaped like the Korean Peninsula, outlined in light (2025–26)
  • Blue LED 'sea' with dolphin and sailboat figures in Morning Square (2025–26)
  • Themed light zones and a light tunnel (love, animals and plants in 2023–24)
  • Combined ticket with the garden's small zoo (adults ₩19,500)

Who it suits. Best for couples, families and photographers who want an unhurried winter evening walk among lights within reach of Seoul, and for visitors pairing it with Nami Island or Petite France on a Gapyeong day out; less suited to anyone who dislikes the cold, needs step-free paths, or must rely on buses late in the evening.

Getting there

From Seoul

ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan (about 50 minutes, ₩5,700) or Cheongnyangni (about 34 minutes, ₩4,500) to Cheongpyeong Station, or the slower Gyeongchun line (Seoul Metro) from Sangbong (about 42 minutes). From Cheongpyeong Station Exit 1 take a taxi (about 15 minutes, around ₩16,000) or bus 30-6 or 30-7 (₩1,550, about 32 minutes; infrequent: in 2022 the 30-6 ran about every 80 minutes). The Gapyeong tourist circular bus (course B, starting at Cheongpyeong Station) also stops at the garden. By car the garden is about 65 km from Seoul, with free parking.

From Busan

KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station (about 2 h 30 m, ₩54,400 standard class since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger), then Line 1 to Yongsan or Cheongnyangni for ITX-Cheongchun to Cheongpyeong (about 50 or 34 minutes) and a taxi of about 15 minutes to the garden.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, Line 1 to Yongsan or Cheongnyangni, then ITX-Cheongchun to Cheongpyeong Station and a taxi of about 15 minutes.

Last leg from Cheongpyeong Station

Gyeongchun Line (Seoul Metro) and ITX-Cheongchun (Yongsan–Chuncheon), Exit 1. Not walkable: about 15 minutes by taxi, or about 32 minutes on bus 30-6 or 30-7

Festival shuttle

No official festival shuttle was found. The Gapyeong tourist circular bus stops at the garden on course B, which starts at Cheongpyeong Station (one-day ticket with unlimited rides: adults ₩8,000, youth and children ₩6,000, under 3 free; the loop was split into courses A and B in April 2026), but its winter and evening timetable was not found. A travel blog describes a paid evening festival shuttle from Cheongpyeong Station; neither the garden nor KTO confirms it.

Getting home

In 2025–26 the lights went off at 21:00 (23:00 on Saturdays). Buses between the garden and Cheongpyeong are sparse in the evening (in 2022 the 30-6 left Cheongpyeong about every 80 minutes), so most visitors without a car take a taxi back to Cheongpyeong Station, about 15 minutes. ITX-Cheongchun and Gyeongchun-line trains run from Cheongpyeong to Seoul into the evening; check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the station before you go, especially for a Saturday visit to the late close.

Parking

Free on-site parking (KTO). It gets very busy on festival evenings, especially at weekends, so arrive in the afternoon.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm

  • 2026–27 (20th edition) dates, hours and prices were not announced as of 18 October 2026; the garden's own site (morningcalm.co.kr) could not be opened, so its notices were not checked.
  • Last entry time during the festival (normal last entry is an hour before closing), and whether Saturday's 23:00 close also applies on public holidays, as it did in 2016–17.
  • Cheongpyeong ITX fares (₩5,700 from Yongsan, ₩4,500 from Cheongnyangni) and ride times come from a 2022 guide; its Gapyeong fares match Korail's current ITX fare table, but the Cheongpyeong figures were not checked against Korail.
  • Last ITX-Cheongchun and Gyeongchun-line trains from Cheongpyeong to Seoul on festival evenings (check in the Korail+ app nearer the date), the current 30-6/30-7 timetable and fare, and the winter timetable of Gapyeong tourist bus course B were not found.
  • A travel blog (travelmapjourney) gives different 2025–26 dates (29 Nov–29 Mar), festival prices of ₩17,000–21,000 and an evening shuttle from Cheongpyeong Station; KTO and Gyeonggi Province do not confirm any of this, and the record follows KTO.
  • First year 2007 is derived from edition numbers (15th in 2021–22, 18th in 2024–25, 19th in 2025–26), not stated by the organizer.
  • Number of lights: Kyunghyang reported about 6 million LED bulbs in 2012, while Gyeonggi Province's 2016 English page said 30,000 lights; no current figure was found.
  • Whether children under 36 months enter free (implied by the child band starting at 36 months), and the exact age for the youth rate.
  • Pet rules, wheelchair access and rental, foreign-card acceptance and online ticketing for foreign visitors were not confirmed.
  • KTO's Korean and English contentIds for the festival were not found; the KTO Japanese (1761827), Simplified Chinese (1760827) and Traditional Chinese (1761697) listings were read through the ktriptips mirror.
  • Nami Island's winter ferry times and the taxi time and fare from Nami Island to the garden (33 minutes, about ₩31,000, from a 2022 guide) were not rechecked; the Morning Calm zoo's winter opening was not found, so it was dropped from the list.

Changes: 2026-10-18 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-18 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-29 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: removed the 2022 last-bus time from Cheongpyeong and pointed to the Korail+ app (코레일+) for the last train; getThere.leaving added; prices: exact 2025–26 admission replaced with 'paid, about ₩7,000–11,000 by age' in the answer, practical and FAQ (the 2025–26 edition keeps its prices).
