What it is like

Gwanghwamun Market is the Seoul Tourism Organization's Christmas market on Gwanghwamun Square, the long plaza that runs south from the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace. It began in 2022 as a pilot of about 50 booths beside that winter's lantern displays, became a regular event in 2023 and has grown every year since: 1.64 million visits over 24 days in 2024, and about 3.57 million over 20 days in 2025. Seoul's festival portal now calls it the city's flagship Christmas market.

The look is a European Christmas village rebuilt as a "Santa Village": red-roofed cabin stalls, a 15 m tree and more than ten photo sets, such as a Nutcracker house, a gingerbread cookie house where you can post a wish letter, a snowflake fountain and a teddy-bear photo studio. In 2025 a Rudolph carousel was added; rides were free for visitors who completed the stamp tour around the site, and Santa sat for free photos under the big tree from 21 to 25 December. Brand partner zones (Disney, Barbour and Nespresso in 2025) and charity and regional-promotion booths fill the gaps. The stalls themselves are small Seoul businesses selling handmade crafts and seasonal goods, with a new set of sellers in each of three seasons.

It is an evening event. In 2025 it opened 17:30–21:30, extended to 22:00 in mid-December because of the crowds, and was due to stay open until midnight on New Year's Eve. Entry is free. The market shares its organizer, website and opening day with the Seoul Lantern Festival, whose route starts at Cheonggye Plaza at the southern end of the square, and both sit under the city's Seoul Winter Festa banner, so most visitors do both in one evening. The market usually closes first: on 31 December in 2025, against 18 January for the lanterns.

The 2026 edition is scheduled for 11 December 2026 to 10 January 2027 (31 days), again in three seller seasons.

Caveats: this is a photo-and-crafts market more than a food-and-drink one. Food was limited to a few seasonal stalls and a food area in 2025, and the 2026 call for small businesses lists only craft and seasonal-goods sellers. Christmas week and weekend evenings are very crowded, with long queues for the tree and the carousel, and the open square is exposed to the December wind.

Highlights

  • A 15 m Christmas tree at the centre of a European-style "Santa Village" of red-roofed stalls on Gwanghwamun Square (2024 and 2025)
  • Rudolph carousel, new in 2025: rides were free for visitors who completed the stamp tour, with ride tickets and a gift for the first 150 people a day
  • Free photos with Santa under the big tree, 21–25 December (2025 and 2024), first come, first served
  • More than ten themed photo zones in 2025, including a Nutcracker house, a gingerbread cookie house with a wish-letter box, a snowflake fountain and a teddy-bear photo studio
  • Three seasons of small-business stalls (36 teams each in 2025, 32 planned for 2026) selling handmade crafts and seasonal goods, with new sellers each season
  • Run by the same organizer as the Seoul Lantern Festival, which opens the same day and starts at Cheonggye Plaza at the south end of the square

Who it suits. Best for couples, families with young children and first-time visitors staying in central Seoul who want a free, festive evening walk and holiday photos, combined with the Cheonggyecheon lanterns; less suited to anyone expecting a German-style food-and-mulled-wine market, or who dislikes long queues and dense crowds in Christmas week.

Getting there

From Seoul

Line 5 to Gwanghwamun Station, which lies under the square: the organizer's directions give Exit 9, which leads up through the underground Haechi Madang passage, or Exit 7; Exit 1 comes up by the Sejong Center, where the 2025 market began. From Line 3, take Gyeongbokgung Station Exit 6 and walk south towards the square. From City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2), Exit 4 or 5 is about 5 minutes from Cheonggye Plaza at the square's south end; carry on north along Sejong-daero.

From Incheon Airport

AREX all-stop train to Gongdeok, then Line 5 to Gwanghwamun Station; or airport bus 6002, which is listed among the routes serving Gwanghwamun Square.

Last leg from Gwanghwamun Station

Seoul Subway Line 5, Exit 9 or 7. The station is directly under the square; Exit 9 leads straight up into it through the Haechi Madang underground passage

Getting home

Ordinary-night last subway trains at Gwanghwamun Station were not checked; if you stay late, look them up in a map app or at the station before you go. On New Year's Eve 2025 the city ran the subway past midnight for the Bosingak bell-ringing, and Line 1 trains skipped Jonggak during the event; the 2026 arrangements had not been announced as of 21 October 2026, so check Seoul's announcement before 31 December.

Parking

There is no parking at the square itself. The organizer points to the Sejong-ro Public Parking Lot, the Gwanghwamun Building public car park and the Kyobo Building private car park, but warns of heavy traffic and asks visitors to use public transport. On New Year's Eve 2025 roads around Bosingak were closed overnight and bus routes were diverted; the 2026 plan had not been announced.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

From November to February it is open 09:00–17:00 with last entry an hour before closing, and it is closed on Tuesdays (KTO), so you come out just as the square starts to fill. • Free exhibition halls two floors under the square on King Sejong (the creation of Hangeul, Joseon science and court music) and Admiral Yi Sun-sin (his naval battles, with a turtle-ship replica you can walk inside and a ship to row). Questions travelers ask

When is the Gwanghwamun Market 2026?

11 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, according to the Seoul Tourism Organization's call for stall holders, revised on 13 October 2026 to match the 2026 Seoul Winter Festa. Daily hours have not been published; in 2025 the market opened 17:30–22:00.

Is the Gwanghwamun Christmas market free?

Yes. Entry has been free in every recent edition; you pay only for crafts, seasonal goods and food. In 2025 the Rudolph carousel and photos with Santa were free as well.

How do I get to the Gwanghwamun Market?

Take Line 5 to Gwanghwamun Station, which is under the square: Exit 9 leads up through the Haechi Madang underground passage, or use Exit 7. From Line 3, use Gyeongbokgung Station Exit 6. City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2) is about 5 minutes from Cheonggye Plaza at the south end of the square.

Is it the same as the Seoul Lantern Festival?

No, but they are companions. Both are run by the Seoul Tourism Organization, share the website stolantern.com and open on the same day under the Seoul Winter Festa banner. The lanterns line Cheonggyecheon from Cheonggye Plaza, at the south end of the square. The market runs for a shorter period: in 2025 it closed on 31 December, while the lanterns stayed lit until 18 January.

How does the carousel work?

In 2025 the Rudolph carousel was free: complete the stamp tour around the market (the first stamp is at the information desk), then collect a ride ticket and a gift at the ticket booth, limited to the first 150 people a day. Children under 90 cm rode in the carriage, and those under 110 cm with a guardian.

Can I pay by card at the market?

In 2024 the organizer said both cards and cash are accepted. The stalls are small businesses, so carry some cash in case a foreign card is declined.

Is there food and mulled wine?

Some food, but it is mainly a crafts market. 2025 had three seasonal-food teams per season and a food area with warm desserts and drinks; 2024 had a Restaurant Street in Sejongno Park with cookies and European-style sausages. The 2026 call for small businesses lists only craft and seasonal-goods sellers, so the 2026 food line-up is not known yet.

Is it open on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve?

Yes. In 2024 it also opened in the daytime on 25 December and 1 January. In 2025 it was due to stay open until midnight on 31 December, and the subway ran past midnight that night for the Bosingak bell-ringing; check the 2026 subway hours before you go.

What is the weather like during Gwanghwamun Market?

December in Seoul: average high 4 °C (40 °F), low −3 °C (26 °F), 23 mm of rain (Seoul station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). January in Seoul: average high 2 °C (36 °F), low −5 °C (22 °F), 17 mm of rain (Seoul station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Well below freezing at night: a down coat, hat, gloves and thermal layers.

What we could not confirm

  • 2026 daily hours, theme and programme have not been published (the organizer's call for stall holders gives only the dates; Seoul's festival portal lists "December (planned)"; checked 18 Oct 2026).
  • The 2026 dates were already moved once (on 13 Oct 2026, from 4 Dec–3 Jan) and 2026 Seoul Winter Festa dates are not yet public; recheck in November.
  • Whether food stalls return in 2026: the small-business call lists only craft and seasonal-goods sellers, and no food or mulled-wine operator has been named.
  • 2025 closing time conflicts: the organizer's notice says 22:00 from 16 Dec, Herald Economy says 22:30; on 31 Dec the city planned midnight, Herald reported 01:00.
  • Whether all stalls accept foreign cards (only a general 2024 FAQ line on cards and cash was found; nothing for 2025 or 2026).
  • Foreign names vary: KTO lists only Simplified Chinese 光化门广场市集 (Seoul's own Chinese newsletter uses 光化门集市); Japanese 光化門マーケット comes from Seoul newsletters and the press, not a KTO page; for Traditional Chinese the site uses 光化門市集 (the STO newsletter writes 光化門市場).
  • Accessibility (lifts at Gwanghwamun Station exits, step-free routes into the market) was not published.
  • The 2025 market leaflet (stolantern.com/img/2025khm.pdf) could not be downloaded, so the site map and food list were not checked.
  • Last train back on the festival date under the timetable in force that day: ordinary-night last subway trains at Gwanghwamun, and the 2026 New Year's Eve subway extension (not announced as of 21 Oct 2026).
  • Seoul Light Gwanghwamun 2026 dates and hours, and 2026 Gyeongbokgung winter hours, were not checked against a 2026 notice (palace hours from KTO's listing, show hours from 2025).

Changes: 2026-10-18 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-18 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-20 — Removed "longest run so far": the 2026 run (31 days) is shorter than the 2022 pilot (36 days) and the 2023 edition (38 days). · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the 2025 New Year's Eve last-subway clock times; the 2026 subway extension has not been announced, so visitors are told to check Seoul's announcement. · 2026-10-29 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: removed the 2025 New Year's Eve traffic-control clock times and the market closing time from the last-train text; prices: no change (entry free, no fees quoted).
