What it is like
Haeundae is Busan's best-known beach, and every winter its district office turns the walk from the subway to the sand into a trail of lights. The Haeundae Light Festival covers Gunam-ro, a street of about 490 m between Haeundae Station and the beach that the district has made into a pedestrian square (Haeundae Square), and the beach itself, where large installations stand on the sand facing the sea. In some years the lights have also spread into Haeundae Traditional Market and the hot spring road, Oncheon-gil; in 2023 about 1.4 km of streets were lit in all. Busan city's listings count the 4th edition in 2017–18 and the 12th in 2025–26, which puts the first in 2014.
Each edition has a theme and new pieces. The 2025–26 theme, "STELLAR HAEUNDAE: waves of stars roll in", put a Starlight Gate at the Gunam-ro entrance, a 4 m star sculpture and Christmas trees of 3 m, 5 m and 8 m along the street, and a Stellar Wave Zone of lights that seem to roll down towards the sea. On the beach, the Haeundae Universe Zone used a 10 m Earth model for media art, beside a 180 m Milky Way stretch of LED lights with planets, stars and spacecraft. Earlier years brought media-art walls on the sand (a 400 m 'light wave' in 2022, a 40 m media zone in 2023) and Christmas reindeer, sleighs and a fake-snow photo spot in 2024.
The programme is small: a lighting ceremony on opening night (in 2025 with a concert and a fireworks show over the sea at 19:00), an experience square on the beach with sand art and pedal-powered light bicycles, weekend busking on Gunam-ro, Santa and carol events around Christmas, and in 2024 a New Year's Eve countdown with DJs and about 1,000 drones.
There is no ticket and no gate, so the lights fit easily into an evening in Haeundae, with dinner nearby or a walk along the beach towards Dongbaekseom. Busan's other big winter lights, the Gwangbok-ro Winter Light Tree Festival in Nampo-dong, run in the same weeks across town.
The honest caveats: the beach is exposed in winter, and some installations may be limited in strong wind or bad weather. Weekends, Christmas and New Year's Eve are crowded, and parking near the beach fills early. The 2026–27 dates (28 November–10 January) come from the district's annual events calendar, which notes that dates may change; the theme, lighting hours and programme are usually announced only shortly before the lights go on, and stage events are in Korean.
Highlights
- A light trail from Haeundae Station down Gunam-ro (about 490 m) to the beach: in 2025 a Starlight Gate, a 4 m star and Christmas trees of 3 m, 5 m and 8 m
- Haeundae Universe Zone on the sand in 2025: a 10 m Earth model for media art and a 180 m Milky Way of LED lights, planets and spacecraft by the night sea
- Free with no gate: lit 18:00–23:00 daily in 2025–26 (17:30–24:00 in 2022–23 and 2024–25)
- Opening-night lighting ceremony; on 29 November 2025 it included a concert and a fireworks show over the sea at 19:00
- Starlight Square on the beach, 18:00–22:00 daily in 2025: sand art, line art, pedal-powered light bicycles and a Christmas photo booth with free props
- Christmas and New Year events: Santa and carol programmes on the beach stage (2022, 2023) and a New Year's Eve countdown with about 1,000 drones in 2024
- Held every winter since 2014; Haeundae Station (Line 2) Exits 3 and 5 open onto the lit street
Who it suits. Best for couples, families and anyone staying in Haeundae between late November and January who wants a free evening walk with the sea as a backdrop; less suited to people who dislike crowds on December weekends, or who expect a ticketed light park rather than decorated streets and a beach.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station, about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger). Then take Busan Metro Line 1 to Seomyeon and change to Line 2 for Haeundae Station, about an hour in all; leave by Exit 3 or 5, which open onto Gunam-ro, the lit street that leads about 5 minutes on foot to the beach. Express buses 1001 and 1003 also run from Busan Station to Haeundae.
From Busan
Busan Metro Line 2 to Haeundae Station, Exit 3 or 5: Gunam-ro starts at the exits and the beach is about 5 minutes' walk (Busan city; Telltrip gives about 9 minutes from Exit 5). From Busan Station or Nampo, take Line 1 to Seomyeon and change to Line 2 (about an hour from Busan Station). City buses 38, 39, 40, 63, 141, 200, 1001 and 1003 stop at Haeundae Beach.
From Incheon Airport
Domestic flight from Incheon to Gimhae (Busan), then the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang and Metro Line 2 east to Haeundae, about 1 h 20 m from the airport. Airport bus Line 1 also serves Haeundae. Or take AREX to Seoul Station and the KTX to Busan Station, then the metro via Seomyeon.
Last leg from Haeundae Station
Busan Metro Line 2, Exit 3 or 5. Gunam-ro, the lit street, starts at the exits; about 5 minutes on foot to the beach (Busan city), about 9 minutes from Exit 5 (Telltrip)
Getting home
In 2025 the lights stayed on until 23:00, so returning to Seoul the same night means leaving while they are still on. Allow about an hour from Haeundae to Busan Station on the metro (change at Seomyeon). The last trains on the festival dates under the Korail timetable in force from 1 November 2026 were not checked: check the last KTX from Busan Station in the Korail+ app (코레일+; KTX and former SRT trains are booked there since the 1 Sep 2026 merger) or at the station before you go, and book the return in advance. Staying overnight in Haeundae is easier.
Parking
No dedicated festival car park (Telltrip). Public car parks near the beach, such as the Haeundae Plaza public car park, charge by the 10 minutes, roughly ₩100–500 per 10 minutes, more at weekends; Busan city lists paid parking at the beach. Weekend evenings are congested, so the metro is easier.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask
When is the Haeundae Light Festival 2026?
28 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 (Saturday to Sunday), the 13th edition, around Gunam-ro and Haeundae Beach. The dates are listed in Haeundae-gu Office's 2026 events calendar, which notes that dates may change. Lighting hours and the programme are not yet published; in 2025–26 the lights were on 18:00–23:00 daily.
Is the Haeundae Light Festival free?
Yes. There is no ticket or gate; Busan city lists the 2024 and 2025 editions as free admission, and the 2025 Christmas photo booth lent its props for free.
What time are the lights on?
18:00–23:00 every day in 2025–26, with the beach experience square open 18:00–22:00. In 2022–23 and 2024–25 the lights ran 17:30–24:00; in 2022 the beach section went dark at 23:00. Hours for 2026–27 are not yet published.
Which subway station and exit should I use?
Haeundae Station on Busan Metro Line 2, Exit 3 or 5. Gunam-ro, the lit street, starts at the exits and runs about 490 m to the beach, about 5 minutes on foot.
How do I get there from Gimhae Airport?
Take the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang and change to Metro Line 2 east to Haeundae, about 1 h 20 m in all. Airport bus Line 1 also serves Haeundae.
Can I see it on a day trip from Seoul?
Only just. The KTX to Busan Station takes about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class) and the metro to Haeundae about an hour more, and you would have to leave while the lights are still on (until 23:00 in 2025) to catch a train back to Seoul. Check the last train for your date in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station and book the return in advance; staying the night in Haeundae is easier.
Are there fireworks or a New Year countdown?
In 2025 a fireworks show over the sea ran at 19:00 on opening night (29 November) only. For New Year 2025 the festival held a countdown from 23:00 on 31 December 2024 with artists, DJs and about 1,000 drones; we found no countdown announcement for 2025–26.

What we could not confirm
- 2026–27 theme, lighting hours and programme not yet published (searched 21 and 29 Oct 2026). Dates (28 Nov 2026–10 Jan 2027) come from Haeundae-gu’s events calendar (updated 12 Oct 2026), which says they may change; recheck when the district announces the festival (usually mid to late November).
- A travel blog gives 29 Nov–18 Jan for 2026–27, the same days as 2025–26; it disagrees with the district's calendar and is not used.
- Haeundae-gu's own festival page (haeundae.go.kr tourism menu) has not been read; the 2026–27 dates come from the district's events calendar page, and past dates and hours rely on Busan city, KTO listings and news.
- firstHeld 2014 is worked out from the edition count (4th in 2017–18, 6th in 2019–20, 9th in 2022–23, 12th in 2025–26, and the district calendar's 13th in 2026–27); no source opened states the first year directly, and how the 2020 and 2021 editions ran during COVID was not checked.
- Hours conflicts: for 2025 Busan city, KTO and ELLE give 18:00–23:00, while Stars and Stripes (Haps) gave 18:00–22:00 with installations lit to 23:00 (probably the programme hours); for 2024 Busan city gives 17:30–24:00 and Korea JoongAng Daily 18:00 to midnight.
- Whether a New Year's Eve countdown was held at Haeundae for 2025–26 (one was held for 2024–25) was not confirmed.
- No visitor totals were found for any edition.
- Last train back on the festival date under the timetable in force that day (Busan Station→Seoul Station, Korail timetable from 1 Nov 2026): not verified on 29 Oct 2026 (Korail pages not opened). Rail fare carried over from the Busan Fireworks Festival record (fare table of 1 Sep 2026); the Busan Station–Haeundae metro time (about 1 h) is from a conference travel page, not the operator.
- Busan Metro Line 2 last trains from Haeundae, the airport bus Line 1 fare and timetable, accessibility, pet rules and foreign-card acceptance were not checked.
- Names: ja 海雲台光祭り and zhHans 海云台光庆典 come from KTO listings read through the ktriptips mirror; zhHant 海雲臺光慶典 comes from Busan city's 2019 Traditional Chinese newsletter, as KTO's Traditional Chinese listing was not opened.
- The festival is not in the site's TourAPI snapshot of 18 Oct 2026; the KTO Korean contentId 2048902 is taken from the ktriptips mirror URL.
- The web search budget (12 searches) was used up; Kookje Shinmun, Busan Ilbo and Yonhap reports and Visit Busan were not opened.
- Blueline Park Sky Capsule hours, ride time and fares come from travel guides (iVisitKorea gives 09:00–18:00 in winter, Trip.com 09:30–18:00); the operator's own site did not turn up in searches, and the last boarding time was not found.
- Car-park charges are given as a rounded range from Telltrip's 2025 figures; current rates were not checked.
