What it is like
Damyang, the bamboo county just north of Gwangju, marks Christmas with a small local festival over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; the 2025 edition was billed as the seventh. It is a two-day street-and-stage event rather than a month-long light show or Christmas market, and its format and venue have changed from year to year. In 2023 it was branded the Damyang Meta Music Festival and ran for three days, with K-pop, trot and DJ sets on an outdoor, standing-only stage on the Metasequoia Road. In 2024 it moved into the old town, closing Jungang-ro to cars for two days for a parade, a Santa campfire, a wish tree and street lighting. In 2025 it went back to Metaland, the park built around the road's 1,300 metasequoia trees, under the slogan 'We are someone's Santa'. Christmas Eve opened with local children singing carols, a street parade with Santa, a lighting ceremony and fireworks, followed by sets from Lim Chang-jung, Wax and an EDM DJ; Christmas Day brought Noise, Park Seong-hyeon and local performers. Around the stage, 20 costumed Santas ran mini-games, photo events and giveaways, families roasted marshmallows and corn over braziers at the Santa Grill House in the Children's Provence area, and there were LED-lamp and keyring workshops, light installations (a large star at the entrance, Santa frames, snowmen and a big tree) and stalls selling Damyang produce. Busking in the old town's Central Park and exhibitions at Dambit Art Warehouse and Haedong Culture and Art Village spread the event into town. Tickets for Metaland and Juknokwon (a few thousand won each) were refunded in full as local gift vouchers, so a visit costs little beyond food and transport. Caveats: everything runs in Korean; daily hours and stage times were not published in the sources we found; the venue and line-up change every year and appear only about a month ahead; the concerts are outdoors and standing on a December night; and Damyang has no railway station, so the last direct bus to Seoul is likely to leave before the evening concerts end. Plan to return via Gwangju or stay overnight.
Highlights
- Christmas Eve opening: a street parade with Santa, a lighting ceremony and fireworks (2025)
- Two nights of free outdoor concerts on the Metaplaza stage on the Metasequoia Road: Lim Chang-jung, Wax and an EDM DJ on 24 Dec 2025; Noise and Park Seong-hyeon on 25 Dec
- Santa Grill House in Metaland's Children's Provence area: roast marshmallows and corn over a brazier
- 20 roaming Santas with mini-games, photo events and small gifts; LED-lamp and keyring workshops
- Light photo zones: a large star at the entrance, Santa frames, snowman lights and a big Christmas tree
- Metaland and Juknokwon tickets (a few thousand won) refunded in full as Damyang gift vouchers during the festival
Who it suits. Best for travelers already in Gwangju or the southwest at Christmas who want a small-town Christmas Eve with a parade, fireworks and free K-pop concerts, and for families with children; less suited to anyone looking for a large Christmas market or light show, English-language programmes, or an easy same-night return to Seoul.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan (or Suseo) to Gwangju Songjeong, about 2 hours (₩42,000 standard class from Yongsan after the September 2026 fare cut). In Gwangju, take an intercity bus from U-Square bus terminal to Damyang (about 30–40 minutes, 41 a day) or city bus 311. From Damyang Public Bus Terminal, buses 10-1, 13-1 and 311-2 stop near Metaprovence and the Metasequoia Road, a short walk from Metaland; a taxi is the simpler last leg. Direct express buses also link Seoul Central City Terminal and Damyang.
From Busan
There is no direct bus from Busan, so change at Gwangju. Intercity bus from Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal (Sasang, Line 2 Sasang Station) to Gwangju U-Square: 23 a day, 2 h 57 m, ₩28,300 deluxe or ₩36,800 premium (16 a day also leave Busan Central Bus Terminal, Nopo, taking 3 h 03 m). Then an intercity bus from U-Square to Damyang (37 minutes, ₩3,200) or city bus 311, and a local bus or taxi to Metaland as above. Check the last buses at the terminal before the festival day.
Last leg from Gwangju Songjeong Station (KTX), then bus
KTX Honam Line. Not walkable; about 30–40 minutes by bus from Gwangju to Damyang, then local bus 10-1, 13-1 or 311-2 or a taxi to the Metasequoia Road
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was documented for 2023–2025 in the sources opened.
Getting home
Direct express buses from Damyang Bus Terminal to Seoul Central City stop in the early evening, probably before the Christmas Eve parade, fireworks and concerts finish. To stay later, go back via Gwangju: intercity buses and city bus 311 link Damyang and Gwangju, but return times for the festival date are not published, so leave Damyang with plenty of margin. From Gwangju Songjeong the KTX takes about 2 hours to Yongsan or Suseo, and express buses run from U-Square to Seoul Central City until late at night. Check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+; KTX and former SRT trains are booked there since the 1 Sep 2026 merger) or at the station, and the last buses at the terminal, before you go; seats around Christmas are worth booking early.
Parking
Metaland has two car parks inside the grounds, described as having space even in the winter peak (fee not stated). In 2024, when the festival used the old town, Jungang-ro was closed to cars for both days.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
An avenue of 1,300 metasequoia trees planted in 1972 along about 5 km of road, of which about 2.1 km is a walking path inside Metaland, the park that held the festival stage in 2023 and 2025. Walk it in daylight: Metaland is open 09:00–18:00 every day (adult ₩2,000; free for Damyang residents, under-6s and over-65s). The 2026 venue is not yet announced; if it is Metaland again, the walk and the evening programme are in the same place.
Getting there: Festival venue in 2023 and 2025; from Juknokwon, bus 311-2 (five stops) or a taxi, about 10 min (about ₩5,000)
Damyang's bamboo forest park, opened by the county in 2003 on Seongansan beside Damyang-cheon, with 2.2 km of paths on eight themed routes through the bamboo, starting from an observatory. From November to February it is open daily 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:30 (adult ₩3,000), so go in the afternoon before the evening programme; during the 2025 festival the ticket was refunded as a Damyang gift voucher, so keep it.

A forest on the flood levee along Damyang-cheon and a natural monument: magistrate Seong I-seong built the embankment and planted trees in 1648, and hackberries and zelkovas over 300 years old now shade about 1.2 km of path. It is free and open at all times, so walk it after Juknokwon; at its end is Damyang's noodle street, where a bowl of anchovy-broth noodles is about ₩5,000, a cheap early dinner before the cold evening.
Getting there: Next to Juknokwon along Damyang-cheon, on foot; from Metaland as for Juknokwon
- Getting awayAfter
Direct buses to Seoul stop in the early evening, before the Christmas Eve concerts end. To stay for the evening, go back via Gwangju: intercity bus or city bus 311 to U-Square (about 30–40 minutes), then an express bus from U-Square or the KTX from Gwangju Songjeong. Return times from Damyang are not published, so leave with margin and book Christmas seats early.
Questions travelers ask
When is the Damyang Santa Festival 2026?
Not announced as of 18 October 2026. It ran 23–25 December 2023 and 24–25 December 2025, so 24–25 December 2026 is most likely. The 2025 details came out on 26 November, about a month ahead.
Is the Damyang Santa Festival free?
Effectively, yes. No festival ticket has been reported; Metaland, where the 2025 stage was, and Juknokwon charge small adult admissions (about ₩2,000–3,000), but during the festival both tickets were refunded in full as Damyang gift vouchers you can spend on local food and produce.
Where is the festival held?
In 2025 the main stage was at Metaplaza in Metaland on the Metasequoia Road, with busking and exhibitions in the old town. In 2024 it was held on Jungang-ro in the old town instead, so check the venue when the 2026 programme is announced.
How do I get to Damyang from Seoul?
KTX to Gwangju Songjeong (about 2 hours, ₩42,000 from Yongsan), then an intercity bus from U-Square to Damyang (about 30–40 minutes) or city bus 311. From Damyang terminal, buses 10-1, 13-1 and 311-2 or a taxi reach the Metasequoia Road.
Can I get back to Seoul after the evening concerts?
Not directly: direct express buses from Damyang stop in the early evening. Going back via Gwangju is possible, as KTX trains from Gwangju Songjeong and express buses from U-Square run later, but return buses from Damyang to Gwangju for the festival date are not published, so check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+; KTX and former SRT trains are booked there since the 1 Sep 2026 merger) or at the station, and the last buses at the terminal, before you go.
Who performs at the Damyang Santa Festival?
The line-up changes every year. In 2025 Lim Chang-jung, Wax and an EDM DJ played on 24 December and Noise and Park Seong-hyeon on 25 December; in 2024 the opening concert had Ulala Session and Kim Da-na. The 2026 line-up has not been announced.
What is the weather like at Damyang Santa Festival in December?
December in Damyang: average high 8 °C (46 °F), low −1 °C (31 °F), 37 mm of rain (Gwangju station, about 20 km away, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Near or below freezing after dark: a warm coat and layers.
