What it is like
Saebyeol Oreum is a grass-covered volcanic cone beside Pyeonghwa-ro in the western uplands of Jeju, 519 m above sea level but only about 119 m above the pasture around it. Jeju herders once burned off old grass and pests on hills like this at the end of winter, a practice called bangae, and in 1997 Jeju City turned the custom into a festival, held at Saebyeol Oreum since 2000. For two decades the climax was the burning of the entire hillside at dusk, watched by crowds on the plain below. It moved from the lunar first full moon to March in 2013 because bad weather kept disrupting it.
That climax no longer happens. The hill was last burned in 2021, when the festival was streamed online. The 2022 festival was cancelled after the east-coast wildfires, and in 2023 every fire program was dropped when the national wildfire alert went to level 3 during the Hapcheon fire. A citizens' roundtable followed, and in October 2023 Jeju City announced it would stop setting the oreum alight, citing wildfire risk, carbon emissions and harm to wildlife; 2024 was skipped to redesign the event. Burning the hill now falls under forestry rules, and an ordinance petitioned for by Aewol residents to bring the fire back was passed by the provincial council in October 2024 but sent back by the governor.
The festival returned in 2025 as a 'festival of light without fire', but gusts of up to 24.8 m/s tore through the site and the last two days were cancelled. The 2026 edition (9–14 March) shows the current format: four low-key pre-event days (wish papers, building the symbolic daljip bonfire tower, guided oreum walks), then two main days. On the opening night a hope flame lit at Samseonghyeol shrine is installed and a daljip is burned, with a concert. On the final night a farm-music parade and a torch parade lead to the main bonfire while lasers, fireworks and projected flames sweep the face of the oreum. Daytime brings horseback performances, folk games, a re-enacted Jeju wedding feast, a produce market and walks up the hill. Real fire is used sparingly: on the 2026 opening night, flying sparks led organizers to burn one small daljip instead of the nine planned.
Caveats: this is mostly a festival for islanders (76.1% of about 160,000 visitors in 2026 were Jeju residents), programs are in Korean, the road out jams after the evening show, and the exposed hillside is cold and windy in March, with wind cancellations a recurring risk. Photos of the whole oreum in flames show the old festival, not the current one.
Highlights
- Digital fire-lighting on the final night: lasers, fireworks and projected flames sweep across the face of Saebyeol Oreum while the main daljip bonfire burns (14 March in 2026)
- Torch parade and pungmul (farm-music) parade across the festival plain before the bonfire
- Opening night (19:00 on 13 March 2026): a hope flame carried from Samseonghyeol shrine, daljip lighting, a media-art show and a headline concert
- Wish papers written by visitors are burned with the daljip and 'sent skyward'
- Daytime horseback performances (masang maye), Jeju folk-game contests and a re-enactment of a 1970s–80s Jeju village wedding feast
- Produce market selling Jeju specialties at 20% or more off, with food from 5 local restaurants and 10 food trucks whose menus were published in advance (2026)
- Guided oreum walks (three a day during the 2026 pre-event) and open trails to the summit, about 20–30 minutes up
Who it suits. Best for travelers already on Jeju in March who want a local spring festival with bonfires, torches and a night light show on a volcanic hill; not worth a special trip for anyone expecting the famous burning of the whole hillside, which no longer happens, or for visitors who need English-language programs.
Getting there
From Seoul
Fly from Gimpo to Jeju International Airport: about 1 h 15 min, with dozens of flights a day (Jeju Air alone runs up to 26 round trips daily from 29 March 2026). Jeju has no trains. From the airport's 1st-floor bus stop 4 (in front of gate 4, signed for Daejeong and Hwasun), express bus 151 or 151-1 runs along Pyeonghwa-ro to the Saebyeol Oreum stop, five stops after the airport; express fares start at ₩2,000 by card. A taxi or rental car takes under an hour. On the main festival days, shuttles also run from Jeju City (Jeju Sports Complex, Jeju Halla University), Aewol and Seogwipo.
From Busan
Fly from Gimhae (Busan) to Jeju International Airport, then express bus 151 or 151-1, a taxi or a festival shuttle as above.
From Incheon Airport
Transfer to Gimpo Airport on the AREX airport railroad for the frequent Gimpo–Jeju flights, then continue from Jeju International Airport as above.
Festival shuttle
In 2026 three festival shuttle routes ran to Saebyeol Oreum every 10–30 minutes: (1) Jeju Sports Complex → Jeju Halla University → Saebyeol Oreum; (2) Aewol Gymnasium → Saebyeol Oreum; (3) Seogwipo 2nd Government Office → Cheonjeyeon entrance → Saebyeol Oreum. Check this edition's notice for the 2027 routes and times; the fare, last return shuttles and whether shuttles ran on the pre-event days were not published on the pages opened.
Getting home
Jeju has no trains. Listed hours end at 21:00, and the final-night concert follows the digital fire show, so use the festival shuttle back to Jeju City, Aewol or Seogwipo (last departures not published) or arrange a taxi in advance; the road out along Pyeonghwa-ro has a history of heavy jams when the crowd leaves. Plan to stay the night on Jeju rather than fly back to Seoul the same evening.
Parking
Saebyeol Oreum has a large free car park in normal times; festival-day parking arrangements for 2026 were not published on the pages opened. In 2023 the Jeju Sports Complex and Seogwipo 2nd Government Office car parks were designated park-and-ride hubs for the shuttles. Expect congestion on Pyeonghwa-ro on the main evening.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

- Programs and the official site are in Korean. KTO publishes listings in other languages (German and Spanish versions were seen), but no on-site interpretation is documented.
- Crowds
- Busy on the two main days: organizers projected up to 70,000 people a day and more than 120,000 over 13–14 March 2026, and about 160,000 visited across the six days.
- Best time to go
- The final evening (14 March in 2026) for the torch parade, bonfire and digital fire show; arrive by mid-afternoon for the horseback performance and folk games and to get ahead of the traffic.
- What to bring
- Warm, windproof layers and a hat (the hill is exposed and March winds are strong), sturdy shoes for the oreum trails, a phone light for walking out after dark, and patience for shuttle queues.

- Weather-dependent: the safety plan cancels or postpones when gusts reach 20 m/s, which ended the 2025 festival after one day. Organizers said the digital show itself can run in rain.
- Toilets
- Saebyeol Oreum has permanent restrooms (KTO); festival-specific facilities were not listed.
- Step-free access
- The summit trails are steep: the west trail is stair-like and takes about 20 minutes. No accessibility services were documented for the festival.
2027 program
- Under review for 2027 (Jeju Province, 6 Oct 2026): a pasture-burning program and trekking on Saebyeol Oreum
The hill-wide oreum burning remains abolished; whether any real grass burning returns in 2027 is undecided, and the budget is a proposal awaiting council approval. A councillor questioned the cost (about ₩13,000 per visitor) and the festival's identity at the October 2026 audit.

The road out along Pyeonghwa-ro has a history of heavy jams when the crowd leaves after the final show. Take the festival shuttle back to Jeju City, Aewol or Seogwipo and expect queues (last return times were not published in 2026; check this edition's notice), or book a taxi in advance. Stay the night on Jeju rather than flying back to Seoul the same evening.
Questions travelers ask
When is the Jeju Fire Festival 2027?
Not announced as of 18 October 2026. It is expected in March 2027 at Saebyeol Oreum: recent editions ran 9–12 March 2023, 14–16 March 2025 and 9–14 March 2026, and the dates were published in mid-January.
Do they still set the whole hill on fire?
No. The hill was last burned in 2021, and Jeju City abolished the oreum burning in October 2023 over wildfire risk, carbon emissions and harm to wildlife. In 2026 the slope was lit by a laser, fireworks and media-art 'digital fire' instead, while a daljip bonfire and torch parade continue. A pasture-burning program is under review for 2027.
Is the Jeju Fire Festival free?
Yes, entry was free in 2026 (KTO listing); a few programs charge a fee.
How do I get to Saebyeol Oreum from Jeju Airport?
Take express bus 151 or 151-1 from airport stop 4 along Pyeonghwa-ro to the Saebyeol Oreum stop (fares from ₩2,000 by card), or a taxi. On the main days, festival shuttles also run from Jeju Sports Complex and Jeju Halla University, Aewol Gymnasium and Seogwipo.
What happened to the festival in 2024 and 2025?
It was not held in 2024 while Jeju City redesigned it without the hill burning. The 2025 'festival of light without fire' opened on 14 March, but gusts of up to 24.8 m/s forced the cancellation of the last two days.
How long is the flight from Seoul?
About 1 h 15 min from Gimpo to Jeju, with dozens of flights a day on several airlines.
Can I climb Saebyeol Oreum?
Yes. The summit is 519 m above sea level but only about 119 m above the plain; the steep west trail takes about 20 minutes and the gentler east trail about 30. Guided oreum walks ran during the 2026 pre-event days.
What is the weather like at Jeju Fire Festival in March?
March in Jeju City: average high 13 °C (56 °F), low 7 °C (44 °F), 91 mm of rain (Jeju City station, about 25 km away, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Mild days, cold evenings: a jacket for after dark.
