What it is like

Jeju Olle is the long-distance trail that circles Jeju Island in a chain of numbered courses, run by the non-profit (사)제주올레 (Jeju Olle Foundation) founded by the late Suh Myung-sook. Since 2010 the foundation has held a walking festival every November: for three days thousands of people walk one stretch of trail together each day, while the villages along the way put on music, dance and traditional games and cook lunch from local produce. About 10,000 walkers take part each year, with a growing share from Taiwan, China, Japan, the US, the UK and Canada.

The 2026 edition, the 16th, runs Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 November on Courses 19 and 20 on the north-east coast. Day 1 opens with a ceremony at Jocheon Stadium, close to Jocheon Manse Hill where Course 19 normally starts, and follows Course 19 for about 13 km past Hamdeok Beach and the Neobeunsungi 4·3 Memorial Hall to Dongbok-ri Sports Park. Day 2 continues about 11.5 km through Gimnyeong into Course 20 as far as Jeju Batdam Theme Park, named after the island's dry-stone field walls. Day 3 walks Course 20 in reverse, about 12.9 km from the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement Memorial Park beside the Haenyeo Museum back to the theme park, by way of Pyeongdae Beach and Haengwon Port.

The slogan, "Be happy on the Olle trail" (올레길에서 행복하라), echoes the first festival in 2010. Besides performances on the trail, traditional games and a clean-coast campaign, there are Olle exercises, an OX quiz, a QR stamp tour, an exhibition collecting memories of the trail's first 20 years and a space honouring the founder.

This is the final edition in the current format. Organizers say that concentrating thousands of walkers on one course strains the trail, the villages and the festival's facilities, so from 2027, Jeju Olle's 20th anniversary year, the festival is to walk 23 courses in sequence over 25 days.

The honest caveats: each day is a full walk on coastal paths, beaches, village lanes and farm roads, with no baggage storage; lodging near Courses 19 and 20 is limited; and announcements on the trail are mainly in Korean, although the Olle Pass app used for registration works in English, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish.

Highlights

  • One stretch of trail a day: about 13 km on Course 19 (5 Nov), 11.5 km linking Courses 19 and 20 (6 Nov) and 12.9 km of Course 20 in reverse (7 Nov 2026)
  • Opening ceremony at Jocheon Stadium on 5 November 2026, near Jocheon Manse Hill, the usual start of Course 19
  • Performances by villagers and artists along the route, traditional games and a clean-coast campaign, plus Olle exercises, an OX quiz and a QR stamp tour
  • Lunches cooked by village women's associations: octopus porridge at Bukchon-ri, onion and hijiki gimbap at Gimnyeong-ri, abalone bibimbap at Haengwon-ri (₩10,000–12,000, blog-reported)
  • An exhibition collecting memories of Jeju Olle's first 20 years and a space honouring the late founder Suh Myung-sook
  • The last edition in the three-day, one-course format; from 2027 the festival is to cover 23 courses over 25 days

Who it suits. Best for walkers who are happy to cover 11–13 km a day and want company, village food and Jeju's north-east coast without planning the route themselves; less suited to anyone looking for a sit-down festival, families with small children, or travellers who need English-language programming.

Getting there

From Seoul

Fly from Gimpo to Jeju International Airport (scheduled at about 1 h 15 min, with dozens of flights a day). Jeju has no trains. The festival's shuttle buses link hubs in Jeju City and Seogwipo with each day's start and finish (tickets sold in advance in the Olle Pass app only). Otherwise take a taxi to Jocheon Stadium in Jocheon-eup, east of Jeju City, or an east-coast city bus: express 101 leaves the airport from stop 2 (in front of gate 2, 1st floor) and reaches Hamdeok Beach in about 40 minutes, and route 201 runs from Jeju Bus Terminal along the east coast (₩1,150 by card; express fares from ₩2,000).

From Busan

Fly from Gimhae (Busan) to Jeju International Airport, then take the festival shuttle, a taxi or an east-coast bus as above.

From Incheon Airport

Transfer to Gimpo Airport on the AREX airport railroad for the frequent Gimpo–Jeju flights, or take one of the few direct Incheon–Jeju flights, then continue from Jeju International Airport as above.

Festival shuttle

Festival shuttle buses run between hubs in Jeju City and Seogwipo and the day's start and finish points. Per a blog summary of the organizer's FAQ, tickets are sold only in advance in the Olle Pass app (no sales on site, and tickets can sell out); the fare it quotes is not in an organizer notice we could open; exchange the app voucher for a paper ticket at your first boarding stop, and lost tickets are not reissued. Routes and times by date are on the festival site's transport page, which could not be opened for this record.

Getting home

Jeju has no trains. KTO lists the festival day as 08:00–16:00. Day 1 finishes at Dongbok-ri Sports Park and Days 2 and 3 at Jeju Batdam Theme Park in Gujwa-eup, so ride the festival shuttle back, or take a taxi or an east-coast city bus to Jeju City. An evening flight to Gimpo after the last day is possible, but staying on Jeju is easier.

Parking

There is no dedicated parking at the start, lunch or finish points and each day's route is one-way, so organizers advise against driving (blog summary of the festival FAQ); village roads are narrow.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

YearDatesStatusNotes
2027 Not announced as of 18 October 2026. Jeju Olle says that from 2027, its 20th anniversary year, the festival will change to a 25-day format walking 23 courses in sequence, so it may not keep the three-day early-November slot used in 2023–2026. Pre-registration for the three-day festival has opened in July. tba Organizers gave the strain of large crowds on single courses, villages and festival facilities as the reason for the change.
2026 5–7 Nov 2026 confirmed Day 1 starts at Jocheon Stadium (조천운동장) rather than the usual Course 19 start at Jocheon Manse Hill, which KTO gives as the venue; Days 2 and 3 both finish at Jeju Batdam Theme Park (제주밭담테마공원) in Gujwa-eup.
2025 6–8 Nov 2025 ended 15th edition (between the 14th in 2024 and the 16th in 2026), slogan "Kkodak-kkodak Olle" (꼬닥꼬닥 올레). About 10,000 walkers expected, about 3,000 a day; KTO, Jeju Tourism Organization, Jeju City and Seogwipo City cooperated.
2024 7–9 Nov 2024 ended 14th edition, slogan "Walking tastes good" (걸을 맛 난다). About 3,000 walkers at the opening; about 100 same-day registration places sold out on day 1; about 240 people from overseas pre-registered. Sister trails Kyushu Olle, Miyagi Olle, Taiwan's Thousand Miles Trail and Mongolia Olle took part. Pre-registration ran 17 Jul–11 Oct 2024.
2023 2–4 Nov 2023 ended 13th edition, slogan "Wishing to walk" (걷길 바람); the first full in-person festival in about four years, after the 2020–2021 editions were held as dispersed, non-face-to-face walks and 2022 was cancelled.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Jeju Haenyeo Museum (제주해녀박물관)Before

A museum of Jeju's haenyeo, the women free-divers: their gear, customs, beliefs and village life, with a real diver's house moved onto the site and the memorial to the haenyeo anti-Japanese protests in the garden. Day 3 (Saturday 7 November) starts at that memorial park, so come early: the museum opens at 09:00 (closed Mondays, adult ₩1,100), and walkers set off from about 09:30–10:00 with no mass start (blog-reported). Tip: leave by about 10:30, as lunch on the route is served only until 14:00.

Getting there: Beside the Day 3 start: about 130 m on foot from the haenyeo anti-Japanese memorial (KTO listing)

  • Woljeong-ri Beach (월정리해수욕장)After

A small east-coast beach on Olle Course 20, known for clear emerald water, steady surf and a row of cafés with sea-facing chairs. It suits the end of Day 2 (Friday 6 November), which finishes at Jeju Batdam Theme Park about 2 km inland: sit with a coffee before heading back to Jeju City. In November the beach office is closed and nobody swims. Tip: check the next bus 201 in Kakao Map before you settle in, as it runs only every 30–80 minutes.

Getting there: About 2 km from Jeju Batdam Theme Park, the Day 2 finish (KTO listing): roughly 30 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride

  • Getting awayAfter

Each day ends far from Jeju City: at Dongbok-ri Sports Park on Day 1 and at Jeju Batdam Theme Park, inland from Woljeong-ri, on Days 2 and 3. Book the festival shuttle in the Olle Pass app in advance (no sales on site; tickets can sell out). Otherwise take a taxi or east-coast bus 201 towards Jeju City, which runs only every 30–80 minutes, so check the next one in Kakao Map before you finish.
