What it is like

The Jeju Biennale is the contemporary art biennale of Jeju Island, hosted by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and run by Jeju Museum of Art. It began in 2017, and its history has been bumpy: the first edition was followed by a provincial audit and a police investigation into spending, and the second, planned for 2020, was postponed several times and then cancelled. Since the third edition in 2022 it has opened every two years, and 2026 marks its tenth year.

The 5th edition runs for 83 days, from 25 August to 15 November 2026, under a Jeju-dialect title, 'Heokkeugok Modakchigok Iyahong: The Art of Metamorphosis'. Iyahong is the refrain of a folk song that came to Jeju from the mainland and became one of the island's own, and the theme follows how outside influences scattered, gathered and changed into something local. Artistic director Lee Jong-hu, who also heads the museum, has brought together 69 artists and teams from 21 countries, about 30% of them based on Jeju, in three strands: exile at Jeju Museum of Art, stone culture at the Obaekjanggun Gallery in Jeju Stone Park, and myth in three small venues in Jeju City's old town, with a film programme at Jeju Art Platform.

This is a museum show rather than a festival with stalls and stages. Only Jeju Museum of Art charges admission (₩8,000 for adults); the Stone Park gallery is free with that ticket, and the old-town venues are free. In October and November the venues open 10:00–18:00.

The practical catch is distance. The museum stands on the 1100 Road in Yeon-dong, Jeju Stone Park is in Jocheon-eup, 20–30 minutes from the city by car, and the old-town galleries are near Tapdong on the north coast. No shuttle between the venues was announced and Jeju has no trains, so plan on taxis or city buses and allow a full day for all five. Mondays need care: Jeju Stone Park closes every Monday, and the museum normally does too.

Highlights

  • 69 artists and teams from 21 countries, about 30% of them Jeju-based, across five venues for 83 days (25 August–15 November 2026)
  • A theme taken from 'Iyahong', the refrain of a folk song that reached Jeju from the mainland: how the island absorbed and changed outside influences, told through exile, stone and myth
  • Jeju Museum of Art: the exile strand around the scholar Kim Jeong-hui (Chusa), with a facsimile of his Sehando; the biennale line-up also includes Lee Ufan, Yun Hyong-keun, Lee Ungno, Suh Se-ok, Nam June Paik, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Kang Yo-bae and Byun Si-ji
  • Obaekjanggun Gallery, Jeju Stone Park: basalt and the megalithic stone culture of the north, free with a biennale ticket
  • Old town: Jeju's myths of Seolmundae Halmang and Baekjudo at Art Space IAA and Gallery Remicon, and at Jeju Art Platform a film programme (Wael Shawky, Saodat Ismailova, Patricio Guzmán, Ben Rivers) and 'Terra', a participatory installation by Vincent Morisset and Caroline Robert
  • Zhanna Kadyrova's 'Performance VI', made with 61 portraits by Jeju residents, and Kim Hee-eun's QR-code participation project 'Munjeon'

Who it suits. Best for contemporary art lovers and travellers already on Jeju who want an indoor cultural day; less suited to anyone expecting a festival with stalls and stages, or to visitors without a car who want all five venues in one day.

Getting there

From Seoul

Fly from Gimpo to Jeju International Airport (scheduled about 1 h 15 min, with frequent flights through the day; the airport schedule changes after 24 October 2026, so check flights for your date). Jeju has no trains. Jeju Museum of Art, the main venue, is on the 1100 Road (1100-ro) in Yeon-dong, about 5 minutes by car from Halla Arboretum; a taxi from the airport is simplest. Jeju Stone Park, for the Obaekjanggun Gallery, is in Jocheon-eup, 20–30 minutes from Jeju City by car or taxi; city buses toward Jocheon stop near the park, a short walk from the gate. The three old-town venues are in central Jeju City, within walking distance of Tapdong. City buses cost ₩1,150 by card (₩1,200 cash) and express buses from ₩2,000, but bus route numbers for each venue were not confirmed, so check a map app before you go.

From Busan

Fly from Gimhae (Busan) to Jeju International Airport, then continue by taxi or city bus as from Seoul.

From Incheon Airport

Most travellers transfer to Gimpo Airport on the AREX airport railroad for the frequent Gimpo–Jeju flights, then continue from Jeju International Airport by taxi or city bus.

Festival shuttle

No shuttle between the five venues was announced on the pages opened. Inside Jeju Stone Park, an electric tour car leaves every 30 minutes and a full loop takes about 50 minutes.

Getting home

Jeju has no trains. In October and November the venues close at 18:00 (Jeju Stone Park's last entry is 17:00), which leaves the evening to get back; check the last Jeju–Gimpo flight when you book, and allow for a taxi to the airport.

Parking

Jeju Stone Park has seven car parks; lots 2 and 3 are nearest the ticket office. Parking at Jeju Museum of Art and the old-town venues was not published on the pages opened.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Halla Arboretum (한라수목원)Before or after

Jeju's free provincial arboretum in Yeon-dong, with more than 1,300 plant species and 100,000 plants in greenhouses, gardens and forest trails. It pairs with Jeju Museum of Art: the indoor halls open 09:00–18:00 (March–November) and the outdoor trails stay open until 23:00, so walk it before the museum opens at 10:00 or after it closes at 18:00. Tip: a night market on Sumokwon-gil is listed about 500 m away for dinner.

Getting there: Taxi about 5 minutes from Jeju Museum of Art (about 2 km); free

  • Jeju Stone Park grounds (제주돌문화공원)Before or after

The park around the Obaekjanggun Gallery, devoted to Jeju's basalt stone culture and the creation myth of Seolmundae Halmang; it marked its 20th anniversary in June 2026. Arrive by 15:00 to see both: the park opens 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00, closed Mondays), and an electric tour car loops the grounds every 30 minutes, about 50 minutes round. Tip: keep your biennale ticket, but whether it covers the grounds or only the gallery was not confirmed (park entry is otherwise ₩5,000 for adults).

Getting there: Same park as the Obaekjanggun Gallery in Jocheon-eup; 20–30 minutes by car or taxi from Jeju City

  • Gwandeokjeong and the Jeju-mok government office (관덕정 · 제주목 관아)After

The seat of Jeju's Joseon-era governors, a national historic site rebuilt by 2002 around Gwandeokjeong, the one building left standing after the colonial-era demolitions. It opens 09:00–18:00 daily (adults ₩1,500), and until 31 October it also opens free on Wednesday–Sunday evenings, 18:00–21:00, just as the old-town biennale venues close; in November go by day. Tip: a culture interpreter's guided tour can be booked in advance.

Getting there: On foot in the old town, near the three old-town biennale venues; ₩1,500 by day, free on evening openings

  • Dongmun Market (동문시장)After

Jeju City's main traditional market, selling tangerines and other citrus, seafood, Jeju produce, souvenirs and street food. The market keeps 08:00–21:00 and its night market runs 18:00–24:00, so it is the place for dinner after the venues close at 18:00. Tip: if you fly back the same night, check the last Jeju–Gimpo flight first and allow for a taxi to the airport.

Getting there: On foot, about 1 km from Gwandeokjeong through the old town

Questions travelers ask

When is the Jeju Biennale 2026?

25 August–15 November 2026, 83 days. The venues open 10:00–20:00 in August and September and 10:00–18:00 in October and November, according to the Korea Tourism Organization.

How much are tickets?

Only Jeju Museum of Art charges: ₩8,000 for adults, ₩4,000 for youth and ₩2,000 for children. Show that ticket for free entry to the Obaekjanggun Gallery at Jeju Stone Park; Jeju Art Platform, Art Space IAA and Gallery Remicon are free. Guests of the Mangrove hotels get 50% off.

Where are the venues?

There are five: Jeju Museum of Art on the 1100 Road in Yeon-dong (main venue, exile strand), the Obaekjanggun Gallery in Jeju Stone Park in Jocheon-eup (stone culture), and Jeju Art Platform, Art Space IAA and Gallery Remicon in Jeju City's old town (myth, plus the film programme).

How do I get to the venues without a car?

Jeju has no trains. Fly to Jeju International Airport, then take a taxi or city bus (₩1,150 by card) to Jeju Museum of Art. Jeju Stone Park is 20–30 minutes from Jeju City by car, and city buses toward Jocheon stop near it; the old-town venues are within walking distance of Tapdong. No shuttle links the venues, and route numbers were not confirmed.

Is the biennale open on Mondays?

Plan around Mondays. Jeju Stone Park, home of the Obaekjanggun Gallery, closes every Monday (and on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok), and Jeju Museum of Art normally closes on Mondays; the biennale notices checked did not say whether the museum opens on Mondays during the run.

When is the next Jeju Biennale?

Not announced. Editions have been held in 2017, 2022, 2024 and 2026 (the 2020 edition was cancelled), so a 6th in 2028 would fit the two-year rhythm since 2022, but no dates, theme or director had been announced as of 19 October 2026.

What does 'Iyahong' mean?

It is the refrain of the Iyahong taryeong, a folk song that reached Jeju from the mainland and became one of the island's own. The biennale uses it for transformation: how outside elements scattered (heokkeuda), gathered (modakchida) and changed on Jeju.

What is the weather like during Jeju Biennale?

August in Jeju City: average high 30 °C (86 °F), low 25 °C (77 °F), 272 mm of rain (Jeju City station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). September in Jeju City: average high 26 °C (79 °F), low 21 °C (70 °F), 228 mm of rain (Jeju City station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). October in Jeju City: average high 22 °C (71 °F), low 16 °C (60 °F), 95 mm of rain (Jeju City station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). November in Jeju City: average high 16 °C (62 °F), low 10 °C (51 °F), 70 mm of rain (Jeju City station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Hot, humid and the wettest time of year: light clothes, a rain jacket or umbrella, and water.

What we could not confirm

  • The official site (jejubiennale.org) was not opened: per-venue hours, last entry and full ticket rules were taken from KTO, news and a ticketing listing
  • Whether Jeju Museum of Art opens on Mondays during the biennale (it normally closes on Mondays)
  • Addresses, hours and closing days of Jeju Art Platform, Art Space IAA and Gallery Remicon
  • Bus route numbers and stops from Jeju City and the airport to Jeju Museum of Art, Jeju Stone Park and the old-town venues; the Stone Park bus note comes from a third-party travel page
  • Fee conflict: the ministry's listing shows ₩2,000 / ₩1,000 / ₩500 (probably the museum's standard fee) while KTO and news give ₩8,000 / ₩4,000 / ₩2,000 for the biennale; age bands and free groups (seniors, Jeju residents) for 2026 were not confirmed
  • Whether a biennale ticket also covers general entry to Jeju Stone Park or only the Obaekjanggun Gallery
  • Number of countries: 21 per News Seoul (June) and Canvas (August), 20 per Herald Kyungje (September)
  • 6th edition: no dates, theme or director announced as of 19 October 2026; the current director's term ends in 2026
  • Parking at Jeju Museum of Art and the old-town venues; accessibility and English support on site
  • Japanese and Chinese names: no KTO or official ja/zh-CN/zh-TW name found
  • The haniseoul.com mirror of the KTO listing failed to load and Lonely Planet's page was blocked, so the museum's English practical details could not be cross-checked
  • Last flight back on the festival dates under the schedule in force that day (Gimpo–Jeju schedule after 24 October 2026); the 06:00–20:45 Gimpo departures from the schedule running to 24 October were removed.
  • Whether Jeju-mok Gwana's free Wednesday–Sunday evening opening (18:00–21:00, May–October per KTO) runs to 31 October 2026; the Dongmun night market's 2026 hours (18:00–24:00 per a listing site) and the Sumokwon-gil night market's hours were not checked against an official page.
  • Walking routes and times between the old-town biennale venues, Gwandeokjeong and Dongmun Market were not checked (about 1 km from Gwandeokjeong to the market per a listing site).

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-21 — Tense: the FAQ on the next biennale no longer describes the running 2026 edition as over. · 2026-10-23 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: removed the Gimpo–Jeju departure times and count from the schedule that ends on 24 October; prices: unchanged (2026 amounts from KTO and news; the official site's notice was not opened).

Jeju Fire Festival

The Jeju Fire Festival (제주들불축제) is Jeju City's March festival at Saebyeol Oreum, a 519 m grassy volcanic cone in Aewol-eup, rooted in the island's old custom of burning off dead pasture. The famous burning of the whole hillside was abolished in 2023; in 2026 the slope was lit instead by a laser, fireworks and media-art 'digital fire', alongside torch parades and a bonfire.
