What it is like

Iho Tewoo Beach is Jeju City's nearest beach to the airport, a small bay of grey-yellow sand known for the pair of horse-shaped lighthouses on its breakwater. The festival takes its name from the tewoo (teu), a flat raft of bound logs that Jeju fishermen once paddled along the coast, and it packs the beach's fishing-village heritage into one weekend run by a local committee. Friday is the ceremonial day: the raft is launched and blessed, a rite is held at the wondam (a stone fish trap built in the shallows), the opening ceremony follows at 20:00, and the evening ends with a haenyeo (women divers) torch parade along the sand, a staged anchovy catch and fireworks. Saturday and Sunday are for doing things: paddling a tewoo in the bay (11:00–17:00), building a model raft (16:00–18:00), wading into the wondam to catch fish by hand (a paid, pre-registered session), a community walk, and night concerts from 20:00 to 22:00. Sunday morning brings the rowing contest. It is a neighbourhood festival rather than a big-city spectacle: programmes start and stop at set times, so arrive for the slot you want, and most of the day the beach is simply a beach, with swimmers, surfers and the night opening until 21:00. Note that a different event, the Iho Filter Festival run by Jeju Tourism Organization, uses the same beach a week earlier with concerts and plogging.

Highlights

  • Tewoo raft launching and 'giltteugi' blessing at 18:00 on opening night, followed by a rite at the wondam stone fish trap
  • Haenyeo torch parade, anchovy-fishing re-enactment and fireworks from 20:30 on the opening Friday
  • Tewoo rowing experience 11:00–17:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and the rowing contest from 11:00 on Sunday
  • Wondam fishing: catch fish by hand inside the stone trap (₩20,000 adults, ₩15,000 youth; on-site registration one hour before)
  • Model tewoo and horse-lighthouse crafts for children 16:00–18:00
  • Night concerts 20:00–22:00 on Saturday and Sunday, with the beach open after dark until 21:00 through mid-August

Who it suits. Best for families and anyone already staying in Jeju City who wants a hands-on taste of the island's fishing culture on a beach near the airport; less suited to travelers crossing the island specifically for it, because the programme is short, local in scale and interrupted by long gaps between timed activities.

Getting there

From Seoul

Fly from Gimpo to Jeju International Airport (scheduled 1 h 15 min on most flights, up to 1 h 25 min; dozens of flights a day). Iho Tewoo Beach lies on the coast a few kilometres west of the airport in Iho 1-dong: take a taxi, or a Jeju city bus to the Iho Tewoo Beach stop (이호테우해수욕장; routes 444–447, 451, 451-1 and 453 stop there).

From Busan

Fly from Gimhae to Jeju International Airport, then taxi or city bus as above.

From Incheon Airport

Fly Incheon to Jeju (direct flights operate), then taxi or city bus from Jeju International Airport.

Getting home

Jeju has no rail. Night concerts end at 22:00; arrange a taxi or check the last city bus from the beach, since the festival publishes no late transport.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask

When is Iho Tewoo Festival 2027?

Not announced. The 21st edition ran Friday 31 July–Sunday 2 August 2026, and the 2025 rowing contest fell on Sunday 27 July, so expect a Friday–Sunday around 30 July–1 August 2027. Check the Visit Jeju festival listing from June.

What is a tewoo?

No entry fee is listed. The one priced activity on the 2026 programme was wondam fishing inside the stone trap: ₩20,000 for adults and ₩15,000 for youth, registered on site from one hour before each session.

How do I get to Iho Tewoo Beach from Jeju Airport?

The beach is in Iho 1-dong on the coast a few kilometres west of Jeju International Airport, a short taxi ride. Jeju city buses 444–447, 451, 451-1 and 453 stop at the Iho Tewoo Beach stop (이호테우해수욕장).

The Jeju Fire Festival (제주들불축제) is Jeju City's March festival at Saebyeol Oreum, a 519 m grassy volcanic cone in Aewol-eup, rooted in the island's old custom of burning off dead pasture. The famous burning of the whole hillside was abolished in 2023; in 2026 the slope was lit instead by a laser, fireworks and media-art 'digital fire', alongside torch parades and a bonfire.
