What it is like

The Cheongju Craft Biennale (청주공예비엔날레) is an international exhibition of contemporary craft held every two years in Cheongju, the capital of North Chungcheong Province. It began in 1999, and the organizer describes it as the world's first biennale devoted to craft. Each edition combines a themed main exhibition curated by an artistic director, a guest-country show, special exhibitions, the Cheongju International Craft Competition, a children's biennale, craft markets and workshops.

Its home is the former Cheongju Tobacco Manufacturing Plant, which the biennale first used in 2011. Opened in 1946 and for decades the country's largest tobacco factory, it stopped production in December 2004 and has been remodelled into the Culture Factory (문화제조창), a complex of about 120,000 m². The same site holds the Cheongju branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), the Korea Craft Hall and the Dongbu Warehouse buildings, so a visit easily fills a day.

The 14th edition, 'Re_Crafting Tomorrow' (세상 짓기), directed by Kang Jae-young, ran for 60 days from 4 September to 2 November 2025, the longest and largest so far: 23 exhibitions with about 1,300 artists from 72 countries. The main exhibition showed 148 artists from 16 countries in four sections; Thailand was the guest country; a textile show was co-organized with the Whitworth in Manchester and India's National Crafts Museum with Hyundai Motor's backing; and the Venerable Seongpa showed a 100-metre hanji work at Dongbu Warehouse. The organizer counted more than 400,000 visitors, against about 300,000 over 45 days in 2023.

The 15th edition is planned for 2 September to 31 October 2027. The organizer's call for the 2027 Cheongju International Craft Competition, published in July 2026, schedules its awards at the biennale opening ceremony on 2 September and special awards at the closing ceremony on 31 October, both marked as planned. The theme, artistic director, ticket prices and hours had not been announced as of 19 October 2026.

This is an indoor, ticketed exhibition rather than a street festival. In 2025 it was open 10:00–19:00 and closed on Mondays (except over the Chuseok holiday), and on-site tickets cost ₩12,000 for adults, ₩8,000 for youth and ₩6,000 for children, the same prices as in 2019, 2021 and 2023. Cheongju has no subway: from Seoul, take an express bus (about 1 h 52 m) and then a city bus or taxi, or a KTX to Osong and an express city bus (55–60 minutes).

Highlights

  • Held every two years since 1999; since 2011 in Cheongju's Culture Factory, the remodelled Cheongju Tobacco Manufacturing Plant (opened 1946, closed 2004); the 15th edition is planned for 2 September–31 October 2027
  • 2025 edition 'Re_Crafting Tomorrow': 60 days, 23 exhibitions, about 1,300 artists from 72 countries and more than 2,500 works, with more than 400,000 visitors
  • A themed main exhibition by an artistic director (Kang Jae-young in 2023 and 2025; 148 artists from 16 countries in 2025), plus a guest-country show: Spain in 2023, Thailand in 2025
  • The Cheongju International Craft Competition, held with the biennale since 1999: the 2027 round offers ₩120 million in prizes, with the ₩60 million grand prize presented at the opening ceremony
  • A children's biennale with hands-on craft play (fully booked in 2025), plus craft markets, studio workshops and an international craft forum
  • Next door in the same former factory complex: MMCA Cheongju, a national art museum with open storage on show, free on floors 1–4

Who it suits. Best for craft, design and contemporary-art lovers, and for families at weekends, who want a full indoor day out from Seoul in early autumn. Less suited to anyone expecting an outdoor street festival, and only on in September–October of odd-numbered years.

Getting home

Express buses run back from Cheongju Intercity Bus Terminal to Seoul Central City (listed at 2 h 35 m) and Dong Seoul (1 h 42 m), ₩14,000 deluxe. The 2025 biennale closed at 19:00, so a same-day return should be easy; check the last bus at the terminal (or on the bus booking site) before your visit.

Parking

KTO lists parking at the Culture Factory, using the integrated public car park of the adjoining cultural-industry complex. A visitor guide to MMCA Cheongju says the car park is free for the first 2 hours on weekdays and free at weekends and on public holidays; biennale-period parking rules were not published.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm

  • 2027 dates (2 Sep–31 Oct) come only from the organizer's competition notice as reposted on The Teams; the okcj.org original was not opened. Both ceremonies are marked 'planned', and the first public day could be 2 or 3 Sep (the 2023 opening ceremony was held the evening before the first public day; in 2025 it was on the first day).
  • 2027 theme, artistic director, hours, closed days and ticket prices had not been announced as of 19 October 2026.
  • No KTO festival listing was found: the biennale is not in the TourAPI snapshot (listed.json), and no KTO festival contentId was found.
  • Official Simplified and Traditional Chinese names for the biennale were not found (the Japanese name is from the organizer's own Japanese release).
  • 2025 ticket details: age bands for youth and child tickets, free groups, concessions and any advance or early-bird prices were not found.
  • City-bus ride time from Cheongju's bus terminals to the Culture Factory was not published; whether MMCA's 'Express Bus Terminal' stop serves the intercity terminal where Seoul buses arrive, now that the express terminal operates from a temporary site, was not checked. MMCA also mentions a Cheongju University stop 844 m away without naming the buses that use it.
  • Seoul–Osong KTX journey time and fare were not checked.
  • No biennale shuttle bus was documented for 2025.
  • 2021 visitor numbers were not found; the 2019 figure (about 350,000) is cited from 2023 news coverage.
  • Restrooms, accessibility inside the halls, foreign-card acceptance and biennale-period parking rules were not published.
  • Last buses back from Cheongju to Seoul Central City and Dong Seoul on the 2027 biennale dates under the timetable in force then.

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a Wikimedia Commons photograph of the 2015 biennale (남경훈, CC BY-SA 4.0). · 2026-10-20 — The biennale has used the Culture Factory since 2011, not since 1999 (answer, highlight); Cheongju heritage media-art dates written tense-neutral. · 2026-10-21 — Source check: the 2027 dates now cite the organizing committee's own competition site instead of a contest-listing site. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the October 2026 express-bus clock times, which cannot be relied on for the 2027 biennale; journey times, frequency and fares kept, with a reminder to check the last bus before visiting.
