What it is like
Janghang, at the mouth of the Geum River across from Gunsan, grew up as a port and railway town in the 1930s. Its first railway station, built in 1930 at the end of the Janghang Line, carried passengers and freight for decades until the line was rebuilt and a new Janghang Station opened in January 2008, about 6 km from the town. Through an urban regeneration project the old station was remodelled in 2019 into a culture space, Janghang Urban Exploration Station (장항도시탐험역), with a welcome hall, a small museum of Janghang's history, a children's space, a café and a rooftop lookout over the town.
The Janghang 1931 Night Tour, hosted by Seocheon County and run by the Seocheon Culture and Tourism Foundation, was first held in 2026. It uses the station building, a Mugunghwa train carriage, the platform and the rooftop for four themed evenings, all 17:00–21:00: a music night with a DJ-run music café inside the train (Saturday 10 October), a film night with a talk on modern-era cinema and Janghang's history plus an open-air screening (Saturday 17 October), a dabang night with a rooftop tearoom café and a coffee-drawing workshop (Friday 30 October), and a food night of modern-style dining made with Janghang produce (Saturday 31 October). On every evening there is period-costume rental, a four-cut photo booth, typewriter and postcard writing, busking, an exhibition and a stamp tour.
Entry is free. Some programmes are paid or need advance booking, but the announcements give no prices; details are posted on the foundation's website and social media accounts.
The honest caveats: this is a small, first-time local event, not a large festival, and only two evenings remain after 19 October. It is not at today's Janghang Station but at the old one in the town centre, so you need a taxi from the train. In the mid-October 2026 timetable the last train to Seoul left Janghang before the 21:00 close, so plan to stay overnight in Janghang or nearby Gunsan if you want the whole evening.
Highlights
- Set in Janghang's old railway station, built in 1930 at the end of the Janghang Line and remodelled in 2019 into the Janghang Urban Exploration Station culture space
- Four themed evenings in 2026, all 17:00–21:00: music (Sat 10 Oct), film (Sat 17 Oct), dabang tearoom café (Fri 30 Oct) and food (Sat 31 Oct)
- A DJ music café inside a Mugunghwa train carriage, an open-air film screening and a rooftop tearoom café with coffee drawing
- Modern-style dining made with Janghang produce on the closing night, Saturday 31 October
- Every evening: period-costume rental, a four-cut photo booth, typewriter and postcard writing, busking, an exhibition and a stamp tour
- Free entry; some hands-on programmes are paid or booked ahead
Who it suits. Best for travellers who like retro cafés, old railway buildings and photo spots, and for anyone already staying in Seocheon or Gunsan who wants an evening out; less suited to a day trip from Seoul, because the last train back leaves before the 21:00 close.
Getting there
From Seoul
Train from Yongsan Station to Janghang Station on the Janghang Line: 14–15 a day in the mid-October 2026 timetable, 3 h 15 m–3 h 28 m by Mugunghwa (₩14,100) or 3 h 00 m–3 h 19 m by Saemaeul (₩20,900); there is no KTX. For the 17:00 start, take a train that leaves Yongsan around midday or earlier. The event is not at today's Janghang Station, which opened in January 2008 about 6 km from the town, but at the old station in the town centre, now Janghang Urban Exploration Station; take a taxi from the station (time and fare not documented). Check the trains for 30–31 October in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go.
Last leg from Janghang Station
Korail Janghang Line (Mugunghwa and Saemaeul from Yongsan). Not walkable: today's station opened in January 2008 about 6 km from the town; take a taxi to the old station (time and fare not documented)
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was published for 2026.
Getting home
The event runs 17:00–21:00. In the mid-October 2026 timetable the last train from Janghang to Yongsan left before the 21:00 close, so you cannot stay to the end and still get back to Seoul by train; allow for the taxi of about 6 km to the station. The trains on 30 and 31 October were not checked: look up the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go. To stay for the whole evening, sleep in Janghang or in Gunsan, across the Geum River and 7 km further along the line.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
Korea's national ecology centre in Seocheon, which collects, conserves and displays plants and animals; its centrepiece, the Ecorium, is a set of greenhouses recreating different climate zones. Come straight from the train: it is open 09:30–17:30 with last entry 16:30 (adult ₩5,000; closed Mondays, open on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October), which leaves time to reach the old station for the 17:00 start. Allow two hours or so for the Ecorium alone.
Getting there: Taxi from Janghang Station when you arrive, then on to the old station; time and fare not checked
A national marine research institute whose four-floor exhibition hall, the SeaQrium, shows thousands of specimens of Korean sea life, from marine mammals and birds to a lobby tower of specimen jars. Open 09:30–18:00, last entry 17:00 (adult ₩3,000; closed Mondays), so an hour here in the mid-afternoon still gets you to the 17:00 start. It is indoors, a good fallback if the coast is cold or wet.
Getting there: Taxi from the old station (time and fare not checked); beside the Songnim pine forest and skywalk
A black-pine forest along about 1.5 km of Janghang's west shore, with a skywalk 15 m high over the Geum River estuary mudflats and the West Sea. The forest is always open; the skywalk is open 09:30–18:00 (₩4,000; closed Mondays). Walk it in the afternoon and take a taxi back to the old station for 17:00; the views west over the water are best as the light drops.
Getting there: Taxi from the old station (time and fare not checked); next to the National Marine Biodiversity Institute
- Getting awayAfter
No train to Seoul leaves Janghang after the 21:00 close (mid-October 2026 timetable), and today's Janghang Station is about 6 km from the venue by taxi. To see the whole evening, book a room in Janghang or in Gunsan, 7 km further along the line across the Geum River; if you are taking the train back, leave early enough for the taxi and the last train shown in the Korail+ app (코레일+).
