What it is like

The Gyeonggi Ceramics Biennale is Korea's only biennale devoted to ceramic art. Its first edition was part of the World Ceramic Expo 2001, and it is run by the Korea Ceramic Foundation for Gyeonggi Province across three ceramics towns south-east of Seoul: Icheon, Gwangju and Yeoju. The 13th edition, 'Earth Makes' (땅이 만든다), directed by Lee Dae-hyung, runs for 45 days from 18 September to 1 November 2026.

Each town has its own museum and programme. Icheon is the core: the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art at Icheon Cerapia, in Seolbong Park, holds the main exhibition, with 67 artists in 28 teams from 14 countries arranged in three chapters on clay, land and the planet, plus a Focus Australia section and the 13th International Competition, 58 works chosen from 1,397 entries from 77 countries. In Gwangju, the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum at Gonjiam Ceramic Park shows work by 64 master potters and a collection display that tells Korean history through ceramics, and runs the Kids Biennale on weekends and public holidays. In Yeoju, the Gyeonggi Living Ceramics Museum at Yeoju Dojasesang, inside the Silleuksa tourist resort, shows 'Tradition, Revisited': six artists' new takes on earthenware, onggi, black-glazed ware and iron-painted buncheong, with pieces for sale.

This is a museum show rather than a street festival. The galleries are open 10:00–18:00 every day of the run, with last entry at 17:00, and the ₩11,000 integrated pass gives one entry to each of the three museums. Weekends add free events on the Icheon plaza for ticket holders, such as a team clay-stacking challenge and a QR quiz hunt through the galleries.

Two practical cautions. The Gwangju here is Gwangju-si in Gyeonggi-do, not the southern city that hosts the Gwangju Biennale. And the venues are spread out: the Gyeonggang Line from Pangyo stops at Gonjiam and Icheon and continues to Yeoju, but you need a local bus or taxi from each station, and no shuttle between the venues was announced, so seeing all three in one day is easiest by car.

Highlights

  • Main exhibition 'Earth Makes' at the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Icheon: 67 artists in 28 teams from 14 countries, in three chapters (clay, land, planet), with a Focus Australia section
  • 13th International Competition in Icheon: 58 works chosen from 1,397 entries by 1,050 artists in 77 countries; the grand prize went to David Lauer (Germany) for 'Punch Card House'
  • 'Pungyeong' (Landscape): buncheong ware by Choi Sung-jae set in Piljeong, a hanok pavilion by architect Jang Young-chul, a favourite photo spot in Icheon
  • Gwangju: 'Living Legacy: Masters of Korean Ceramics Today', with work by 64 master potters, and the Kids Biennale 'EARTH PLAYLAB' on weekends and public holidays
  • Yeoju: 'Tradition, Revisited', 94 works by six artists reworking earthenware, onggi, black-glazed ware and iron-painted buncheong, with purchase consultations
  • Free weekend events in Icheon for same-day ticket holders: a 20-minute team clay-stacking challenge three times a day and a QR quiz hunt through the galleries (120 places a day)

Who it suits. Best for craft and design lovers, biennale regulars and families with children at weekends who want a calm indoor day out from Seoul; less suited to anyone expecting a lively street festival, or to travellers without a car who want to see all three venues in one day.

Getting there

From Seoul

Icheon (main exhibition): Shinbundang Line from Gangnam to Pangyo (about 14 minutes), then the Gyeonggang Line to Icheon Station (35 minutes), then a local bus or taxi across town to Icheon Cerapia in Seolbong Park. Or take an intercity bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Icheon Bus Terminal (about every 30 minutes, just over an hour), from where Seolbong Park is about 20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi. Gwangju: the same Gyeonggang Line to Gonjiam Station, then a bus or taxi to Gonjiam Ceramic Park. Yeoju: the Gyeonggang Line on to Yeoju Station, then a bus or taxi to Yeoju Dojasesang in the Silleuksa tourist resort.

From Busan

KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station (about 2 h 30 m; ₩54,400 in standard class since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger), then as from Seoul via Gangnam, Pangyo and the Gyeonggang Line.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, subway to Gangnam and the Shinbundang Line to Pangyo, then the Gyeonggang Line to Icheon, Gonjiam or Yeoju and a local bus or taxi to the venue.

Last leg from Icheon Station

Gyeonggang Line (metro from Pangyo). Continue by local bus or taxi to Icheon Cerapia (route numbers not verified); from Icheon Bus Terminal in the town centre, Seolbong Park is about 20 minutes on foot

Festival shuttle

No shuttle between the three venues, or from the stations, was announced in the 2026 sources checked. The integrated pass allows one entry to each venue on any day of the run; by car the three towns are within an hour of each other.

Getting home

All venues close at 18:00 (last entry 17:00). Gyeonggang Line trains from Icheon toward Pangyo run until late in the evening, so getting back to Seoul is easy; check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+) or at the station before the festival day.

Parking

KTO lists free parking at Seolbong Park (Icheon) and Yeoju Dojasesang, and parking at Gonjiam Ceramic Park (fee not stated). By car, Yeoju Dojasesang is about 12 minutes from Yeoju IC or Seo-Yeoju IC.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Seolbong Park (설봉공원)Before or after

The wooded park around Icheon Cerapia, with a lake, a music fountain, a sculpture park, the Icheon City Museum and Woljeon Art Museum, and trails up Seolbongsan. Free and open every day, it fills the time before the galleries open at 10:00 or after last entry at 17:00, and late October is autumn-foliage time. Tip: the tourist information centre near car park 1 has maps; the fountain plays only at set times.

Getting there: Same park as the Icheon venue (Icheon Cerapia); on foot, free

  • Icheon Ceramic Village (Yes Park) (이천도자예술마을 예스파크)Before or after

Icheon's potters' village in Sindun-myeon: streets of workshops and galleries where you buy ceramics straight from the makers and, at some studios, try the wheel or hand-building (about ₩25,000–30,000 at one studio). Hours vary by studio (one lists 10:00–18:00), so pair it with the Icheon galleries either side of lunch rather than after 17:00. Tip: weekday classes may need a call or a Naver booking ahead.

Getting there: Gyeonggang Line one stop from Icheon to Sindun Ceramic Village Station, then bus 24 or 24-1; or a taxi, about 4 km from Seolbong Park

  • Silleuksa Temple (신륵사)Before or after

A Buddhist temple set right on the Namhan River, known as Byeokjeol for its brick pagoda, with the Gangwolheon pavilion on the rocks above the water. Entry is free and KTO lists it open 08:00–18:00 every day, so walk over before or after the Yeoju galleries (10:00–18:00, last entry 17:00). Tip: on 23–25 October the Ogok Naru Festival fills the same riverside resort, so come in the morning for a quiet visit.

Getting there: On foot along Silleuksa-gil through the Silleuksa resort from Yeoju Dojasesang; free

  • Yeoju Ogok Naru Festival (여주오곡나루축제)After

Yeoju's free harvest festival on the riverbank around Silleuksa, with cauldron-cooked rice bibimbap, roasted sweet potatoes, a royal tribute parade and a different night show each evening (fireworks on 23 and 25 October, nakhwa fire-falling on 24 October). It runs 23–25 October, 10:00–21:00, so it carries on after the Yeoju museum closes at 18:00. Tip: buses from Silleuksa to Yeoju Station are scarce at night; plan a taxi or festival shuttle and check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+).

Getting there: On foot, about 160 m from Yeoju Dojasesang (KTO); free

What we could not confirm

  • 2028 (14th edition) dates, theme and artistic director: not announced as of 18 October 2026; the reason the cycle moved from odd to even years (12th planned for 2023, held 2024) was not found
  • Local bus routes and ride times from Icheon, Gonjiam and Yeoju stations to the three venues, and whether any shuttle links the venues during the 2026 run
  • Seoul–Icheon intercity bus frequency and journey time are from Wikivoyage, not an operator timetable; the current departure terminals and fare need checking
  • Free-admission groups: the ktriptips copy of KTO data adds multi-child families (two or more children), which the TourAPI snapshot does not list
  • Whether foreign residents of Gyeonggi-do qualify for the Gyeonggi-resident discount, and whether foreign cards work at the ticket desks
  • English support (wall texts, audio guides, English pages on gcbiennale.org) was not confirmed
  • Japanese and Chinese names: no KTO or official ja/zh-CN/zh-TW name found
  • 2026 visitor numbers not yet published
  • Last Gyeonggang Line train from Icheon (and from Yeoju) toward Pangyo on the festival dates under the timetable in force that day; a new Korail timetable takes effect on 1 November 2026, the last day of the biennale, and Korail's file from 23 March 2026 may not apply then.
  • Yes Park opening hours vary by studio; no village-wide hours were found, and the official site (2000yespark.or.kr) was not opened.
  • Silleuksa hours: KTO lists 08:00–18:00, a June 2026 article 09:00–17:00 for the temple office; the temple site (silleuksa.org) was not opened. Walking time from Yeoju Dojasesang to the temple not published.

Changes: 2026-10-18 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-18 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-21 — Tense: the FAQ on the next biennale no longer describes the running 2026 edition as over. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the exact last-train times from Icheon, which could not be confirmed for the festival's final days; the page now says to check the last train in the Korail app. · 2026-10-22 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: clock times checked, none in the transport text (last trains already point to the Korail+ app; the new 1 November timetable noted as open); prices: none changed.
