What it is like
Pohang is the home of POSCO's steelworks on Yeongil Bay, and since 2012 the city has held an autumn festival that treats steel as an art material. Korean newspapers describe it as the only festival of its kind in the country. Sculptors, students, residents and Pohang's steel companies make or show works in steel, mostly outdoors along the waterfront, and many pieces stay in the city once the festival ends: in 2023 about 191 works from the first 11 editions were still installed around Pohang. Earlier editions were built around large set pieces, such as a near life-size steel copy of Gyeongju's Cheomseongdae observatory made by POSCO maintenance staff in 2016. Since 2024 the organizers have moved away from commissioning big new works and towards reinterpreting the existing collection and drawing in visitors, steelworkers and companies.
The 2026 edition runs from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 15 November under the theme 탁마 (tak-ma, polishing by rubbing one thing against another), given in English as 'Iron sharpens iron, Potatoes sharpen potatoes'. It is the 15th by the festival's own count, and it moves the focus from Yeongildae Beach, the base in 2023–2025, to the old Dongbin inner harbour. The main indoor venue is Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969, a 1969 harbour ice and cold-storage warehouse turned into an exhibition space with a café upstairs that looks over the water. Around it are four strands: an exhibition around Songdo Beach, a photography show in the warehouse, sculpture and photography at Art436 and Songdo Beach, and a public-architecture project with Handong Global University in the downtown shopping streets. A citizen Steel Culture Planning Group has been running workshops, a citizens' travel agency, poetry and seminars since 15 August.
Entry is free for all ages. Honest caveats: this is a contemporary-art exhibition spread over several sites, not a festival of stages and food stalls; the labels and talks are in Korean; KTO gives no Monday hours; and Pohang Station is on the north-west edge of the city, so the last leg is by taxi or city bus. The sea wind on the waterfront is cool by November. The festival pairs well with Yeongildae Beach, the Space Walk sculpture in Hwanho Park, or the Pohang International Music Festival, which runs 6–12 November 2026.
Highlights
- Korea's only festival built around steel as an art material, held every autumn since 2012 in the POSCO steel city
- 2026 theme 탁마, 'Iron sharpens iron, Potatoes sharpen potatoes', across Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969, Songdo Beach, Art436 and downtown Pohang, 24 Oct–15 Nov
- Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969: a harbour ice and cold-storage warehouse from 1969, now an exhibition space with a sea-view café upstairs
- Outdoor works around Songdo Beach, including the 'Steel Wall Narrative' exhibition and the sculpture and photo show 'Friend of Yeongil Bay'
- 'Public Architecture Pohang', a project with Handong Global University in the downtown central shopping streets
- Free for all ages; about 191 works from the first 11 editions remain installed around the city (2023 count)
Who it suits. Best for travelers interested in contemporary and public art, photography and industrial heritage, and for anyone spending an autumn day on Pohang's waterfront; less suited to people expecting a food-and-stage festival or needing English-language interpretation.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Seoul Station to Pohang Station takes about 2 h 20 m–2 h 30 m; trains also run from Suseo, and since the 1 Sep 2026 KTX–SRT merger both are booked in Korail's own apps and English site. Pohang Station is in Heunghae-eup, on the north-west side of the city, so finish by taxi or Pohang city bus to Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969 at 78 Seonchak-ro, Buk-gu; that leg's route and journey time were not verified for this record. Songdo Beach is about 2 km away across the Dongbin harbour, and Art436 and the downtown sites are in the same central area. Intercity buses also run from Dong Seoul Terminal to Pohang Terminal.
From Busan
Donghae Line trains run from Bujeon Station to Pohang Station about 7 times a day: KTX-Eum takes 1 h 28 m–1 h 30 m (₩18,100) and ITX-Maeum 1 h 58 m–2 h 06 m (₩13,900), standard class. Or take an intercity bus from the Haeundae intercity bus stop to Pohang Terminal, roughly hourly, 1 h 28 m, ₩15,200 deluxe; buses also leave Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo). Check the day's times, including the last train or bus back, in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the terminal before you go. Then a taxi or Pohang city bus to Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969 as above.
Last leg from Pohang Station (KTX)
Donghae Line (KTX from Seoul Station and Suseo). Not walkable: the station is in Heunghae-eup, Buk-gu, on the edge of the city; take a taxi or city bus to the Dongbin harbour area
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was documented for 2026. City bus stops near Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969, according to a KTO-data mirror: Lotte Department Store (about 62 m; routes 207, 209, 900 and 양덕3), Pohang Customs (about 306 m; routes including circular 121, 207, 209, 216, 600 and 900) and Bukbu Market/Chaeum Hospital (about 350 m). Which routes run from Pohang Station was not checked.
Getting home
KTO lists closing at 21:00 Tuesday–Saturday and 18:00 on Sunday. The last trains from Pohang to Seoul Station and Suseo were not confirmed for the festival dates, and a new Korail timetable starts on 1 November 2026, part-way through the festival. Check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at Pohang Station before you go, allow time for the taxi or bus from the harbour to the station (not verified), and leave the evening exhibitions early or stay the night in Pohang.
Parking
Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969 has three parking areas around the building; if they are full, a local reporter suggests the car parks across the road by the moored boats (September 2026). Fees were not stated.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
Pohang's city art museum in Hwanho Park above Yeongil Bay, opened in 2009, with four galleries and a focus on steel art; entry is free (some special exhibitions charge). It opens 10:00–19:00 to the end of October and 10:00–18:00 from 1 November, closed Mondays, so see it in the morning, then Space Walk in the same park, then walk down to the beach and the festival sites (open to 21:00 Tuesday–Saturday). Avoid Mondays: the museum is shut and the festival's Monday hours are not listed.
Getting there: In Hwanho Park, about 3 km north of Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969: a short taxi ride
A walk-on steel sculpture by the German artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth: a roller-coaster-shaped track 333 m long with 717 steps and 25 m high, on the hill of Hwanho Park, with views over Yeongil Bay and the POSCO steelworks; free. In October it opens 10:00–20:00 on weekdays and 10:00–21:00 at weekends and is lit after dark, but from 1 November only until 17:00 and 18:00, so go in daylight then. It closes in rain or strong wind and on the first Monday of the month (2 November).
Getting there: In Hwanho Park, uphill on foot from Pohang Museum of Art; about 3 km from the warehouse by taxi
- Yeongildae Beach (영일대해수욕장)Before or after
Pohang's 1.75 km city beach, with Yeongildae, Korea's first sea pavilion, about 100 m offshore at the end of a footbridge and lit up at night, and steel sculptures from earlier editions of this festival, which was based here in 2023–2025. It lies between Hwanho Park and the harbour, so walk it on the way from Space Walk to the festival sites. The shore walk from the pavilion to Dongbin Grand Bridge takes 40–50 minutes; take a taxi instead if you have a train to catch at Pohang Station.
Getting there: On foot: the beach starts about 1.1 km from Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969 (KTO); free
Questions travelers ask
When is the Pohang Steel Art Festival 2026?
Saturday 24 October to Sunday 15 November 2026. KTO lists 10:00–21:00 Tuesday to Saturday and 10:00–18:00 on Sunday; Monday hours are not listed, so call 054-289-7852 before a Monday visit.
Is the Pohang Steel Art Festival free?
Yes. KTO lists free entry for all ages, and no paid ticket was documented for any 2026 exhibition.
Is the festival at Yeongildae Beach?
Not mainly in 2026. The 2023–2025 editions were based at Yeongildae Beach, but the 2026 sites are Dongbin Culture Warehouse 1969 (78 Seonchak-ro, Buk-gu), Songdo Beach, Art436 and the downtown central shopping streets. Yeongildae Beach is about 1.1 km from the warehouse.
How do I get to the Pohang Steel Art Festival from Seoul?
Take the KTX from Seoul Station (or Suseo) to Pohang Station, about 2 h 20 m–2 h 30 m, then a taxi or city bus to the Dongbin harbour area. The station is on the edge of the city, so allow extra time for the last leg.
What kind of art is shown?
Work made with or about steel: outdoor sculpture by artists and Pohang steel companies, and in 2026 also photography and a public-architecture project with Handong Global University. Since 2024 the festival has focused less on big new commissions and more on reinterpreting its collection and involving residents.
Can I see the steel art outside the festival dates?
Yes. Many works stay in the city after each edition: Maeil Shinmun counted 191 works from the first 11 editions still installed around Pohang in 2023, and a 2025 report put the total at about 230 over 13 years.

- Monday: KTO lists Tuesday–Saturday and Sunday hours only, so it is unclear whether the indoor venues close on Mondays; also unclear whether the listed hours apply to the outdoor works around Songdo Beach.

- Japanese and Chinese names: no KTO or official Japanese/Chinese name found.
- Parking fees, restrooms, accessibility, card payment and rain arrangements are not documented.
- From Busan: train and bus clock times removed on 22 Oct 2026 (they came from third-party mirrors of mid-October timetables); first and last departures for the festival dates not confirmed from Korail or the bus operators.
- Space Walk and Pohang Museum of Art hours come from KTO data mirrors; the city's Space Walk operations page was not opened, and taxi times from Hwanho Park and the harbour to Pohang Station were not checked.
