What it is like

The DMZ OPEN Festival is Gyeonggi Province's yearly programme of art, music, talks and sport about the Demilitarized Zone along the inter-Korean border. Instead of showing the DMZ only as a place of division and military tension, it presents the zone's long-protected nature, its history and the idea of coexistence, and the "OPEN" in the name stands for turning a closed zone into a space for everyone. Editions have been held every year since 2023, first run by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization and, since 2025, by the province itself. The 2025 edition counted about 540,000 visitors to the DMZ area over three months.

The 2026 edition, themed "Open the Line, Connect the Life", runs from 12 October to 29 November. Its core is the exhibition "Staging", curated by Kim Sun-jung, artistic director of Art Sonje Center: 26 works by 14 Korean and international artists, among them Park Chan-kyong, Ahn Kyu-chul, Sunmu and Abraham Cruzvillegas, some made for the show. Part of it is at Imjingak Peace Nuri, the park beside the Imjin River, and part is north of the river at Camp Greaves, a former US Army base inside the civilian control line, in Cafe Greaves, Studio BEQ, Gallery Greaves and Documenta Hall 2. Linked "Exhibition Plus" sessions introduce the area's endangered wildlife, such as leopard cats, otters and red-crowned cranes, and invite schoolchildren to respond to the artworks.

The concerts and talks are in Goyang, closer to Seoul. The DMZ OPEN International Music Festival, "PACE: Returning to Peace", runs 23–25 October at Aram Music Hall in Goyang Aram Nuri with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the Gyeonggi Philharmonic, the Mahlerian Orchestra and the Millennium Philharmonic, and closes with soprano Sumi Jo. The DMZ OPEN Eco-Peace Forum on 28 October at Sono Calm Goyang is co-hosted with the Ministry of Unification and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The Peace Walk and Peace Marathon planned for 2026 have been cancelled: on 21 October the festival announced that Gyeonggi Province's budget situation made them impossible, while the exhibition, the music festival and the forum go ahead as planned.

Honest caveats: this is a spread-out season, not a single festival weekend, and events are in two cities, so check where each one is. To see the Camp Greaves part you ride the Imjingak Peace Gondola across the river and show ID at boarding (a passport for foreigners), and Camp Greaves is closed on Mondays. Information is almost all in Korean, and the festival posts updates mainly on Instagram. No festival shuttle bus was announced, so from Munsan Station you need a taxi or local bus, or one of the few shuttle trains to Imjingang Station beside Imjingak.

Highlights

  • "Staging", a contemporary art exhibition of 26 works by 14 Korean and international artists, curated by Kim Sun-jung of Art Sonje Center, 12 Oct–29 Nov 2026
  • Exhibition spaces inside the civilian control line at Camp Greaves, a former US Army base north of the Imjin River: Cafe Greaves, Studio BEQ, Gallery Greaves and Documenta Hall 2, reached by a gondola ride of about 6 minutes
  • DMZ OPEN International Music Festival "PACE: Returning to Peace", 23–25 Oct 2026 at Aram Music Hall, Goyang, with the KBS Symphony Orchestra and the Gyeonggi Philharmonic; soprano Sumi Jo sings at the closing concert
  • DMZ OPEN Eco-Peace Forum on 28 Oct 2026 at Sono Calm Goyang, co-hosted with the Ministry of Unification and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation
  • "Exhibition Plus" family sessions on DMZ wildlife such as leopard cats, otters and red-crowned cranes, and a children's programme around works by Lee Ye-eun
  • Set around Imjingak, the peace park and Korean War memorial site on the Imjin River, right next to Imjingang Station

Who it suits. Best for art lovers, history-minded travelers and anyone curious about the inter-Korean border who wants to step inside the civilian control line at Camp Greaves without joining a tour; less suited to visitors expecting a one-weekend street festival, since events are spread over seven weeks and two cities and nearly all information is in Korean.

Getting there

From Seoul

For Imjingak and Camp Greaves: take the Gyeongui–Jungang Line (Seoul Metropolitan Subway) to Munsan Station, for example from Seoul Station, Hongik University or Digital Media City; it takes about 1 h 15 min to 1 h 40 min depending on where you start. From Munsan, take a taxi or local bus to Imjingak, or one of the few shuttle trains to Imjingang Station, one stop (3.7 km) further and right next to Imjingak (2 a day on weekdays, 4 at weekends); allow about two hours in all. Gyeonggi Province also lists bus 9710 from Gwanghwamun to Munsan Station, about 2 hours. From Imjingak the gondola crosses the Imjin River to Camp Greaves in about 6 minutes. The music festival and forum are in Goyang, much closer to Seoul.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Digital Media City or Hongik University Station, then the Gyeongui–Jungang Line to Munsan Station and a taxi or local bus to Imjingak.

Last leg from Imjingang Station (most visitors change at Munsan Station)

Gyeongui–Jungang Line (Munsan–Imjingang shuttle trains). Right next to Imjingak (KTO data), but only 2 shuttle trains a day from Munsan on weekdays and 4 at weekends; from Munsan Station, take a taxi or local bus.

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle bus for DMZ OPEN 2026 was found in the sources. The Imjingak Peace Gondola is the way in to the Camp Greaves venues for individual visitors: about 850 m across the Imjin River in about 6 minutes, cabins for up to 10 people. Buy tickets on site the same day or online; every adult signs a security pledge and shows ID (a passport for foreigners), and the QR ticket is checked on the way in and out. The gondola may not run in bad weather.

Getting home

Camp Greaves closes at 17:00 (ticket sales end at 16:00) and the gondola at 18:00 every day, with ticket sales ending at 17:30 (operator's fare page). Gyeongui–Jungang Line trains from Munsan back towards Seoul run well into the evening, and those that run to Seoul Station itself are about hourly outside rush hours; check the last train to your station in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at Munsan Station before you go. For the music festival in Goyang, check the last train for your own route after the concert.

Parking

Imjingak has about 2,100 parking spaces (KTO data), charged at a flat daily rate by vehicle size. Driving over Tongil Bridge to Camp Greaves is not allowed for individual visitors; groups of 20 or more need military approval, applied for 1–2 weeks ahead with a name list.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm

  • Whether the Camp Greaves exhibition venues charge anything beyond the gondola ticket, and the exhibition's own opening hours and closed days (KTO gives only 10:00–18:00, varying by event).
  • 2026 International Music Festival prices come from Pressian's 8 Oct report of the province's announcement; the organizer's own notice (Aram Nuri / NOL Ticket) was not opened, and the time of the free closing concert on 25 Oct was not given.
  • No festival shuttle bus found for 2026. Whether buses 058 and 93-9 run to Munsan Station, their frequency and taxi times from Munsan were not verified.
  • The ₩1,000 online gondola discount is from a travel guide (Sept 2026) and was not seen on the operator's fare page; Paju resident and preferential fares are on the operator page but not on this page.
  • First held: 2023 is the earliest DMZ OPEN edition found, and the 2024 music festival was numbered the 2nd; earlier DMZ peace walks may have run under another name.
  • Overall start and end dates of the 2024 edition (main programmes ran 30 Aug–16 Nov; one source says the wider festival began in May). 2023 start and programme are from the May 2023 announcement.
  • Official website for 2026: KTO lists only the Instagram account; 2025 used dmzopen.kr.
  • Japanese and Chinese names were not found on a KTO or official page.
  • Accessibility of the gondola and the Camp Greaves buildings, pet rules and foreign-card acceptance were not published.
  • The Asia News Network feature on the 2026 exhibition could not be read (rate-limited by the fetch service).
  • Paju Jangdan Bean Festival 2026 (27–29 Nov) is not yet confirmed on Paju City's own page; recheck before the last weekend.
  • Last Gyeongui–Jungang Line train from Munsan towards Seoul on the festival dates under the timetable in force that day
