The Mungyeong Apple Festival (문경사과축제) is a free harvest festival at Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, built around the Gamhong apple, a local variety that is in season only in October and averages 16.5 Brix. The 21st edition is running now, 17 October–1 November 2026, 09:00–18:00 daily, with growers' sales and tastings, orchard picking, an apple exhibition hall and family games. From Seoul, buses from Dong Seoul Terminal reach Mungyeong-eup in about 2 h 20 m (₩14,200), and a free city bus covers the last 10 minutes to the park.

Not yet confirmed for the 2026 edition: opening hours or show times, prices, how to book, the exact venue or site layout, the programme or line-up. Check the organizer's page before you go.

What it is like

Mungyeong, a mountain city in the northwest of Gyeongsangbuk-do, has made the Gamhong apple its calling card. The variety was bred by the Rural Development Administration, tried in Mungyeong from 1993, and is now grown there on about 520 ha, some 65% of the roughly 800 ha planted nationwide. Graded fruit must weigh at least 350 g and reach 16.5 Brix, with low acidity; it is large, dark red and rough-skinned, and it ripens in mid-October. First held in 2006, the festival is timed to that short season and set at Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park, at the foot of the old mountain pass that is the city's most visited sight (about 4.05 million visitors in 2025).

The heart of it is buying apples from the people who grow them. In 2025, 17 farms sold on site, every one offering free tastings so you can compare before you buy; 19 more sold online with nationwide delivery, and 32 businesses sold other local produce such as omija and shiitake. Picking was free at 13 orchards that year, with the fruit you pick for sale, and apples were handed out on Apple Day and after the closing ceremony. The Apple Promotion Hall, an air-dome pavilion since 2025, displays entries from the city's annual apple contest, and a playground on the lawn by the First Gate offers apple hats, photo booths and games for children. In 2024 a 5 kg box of Gamhong sold for a festival price of ₩70,000.

The 2026 edition, the 21st, runs 16 days, from 17 October to 1 November, 09:00–18:00, with free entry; the 2024 and 2025 editions lasted nine days. KTO's listing names an opening ceremony with performances, apple and local-produce sales booths, farm apple picking, a tree playground, apple sticker tattoos, paper apple hats, cornhole, apple sharing and an Apple Day. Entries from the 29th Mungyeong Apple Contest, with 13 prize-winning farms, go on show in the hall, and the 10th Juheulsan song contest takes the Saejae outdoor stage on 18 October. Crowds are large: about 410,000 visitors in 2024 and about 460,000 in 2025, when apple and produce sales reached about ₩2.53 billion.

The honest caveats: this is a farm market and family fair for domestic visitors, and the stage shows are in Korean. Picking terms and apple prices for 2026 had not been published on the pages we could read. Weekends are crowded, parking was the main complaint after the 2023 festival, and weekend KTX trains sold out in 2025. Bus tickets marked 'Jeomchon' go to the city centre, more than 20 km away; use the Mungyeong bus stop in Mungyeong-eup, or the KTX-Eum from Pangyo and a free city bus. The reward is timing: Gamhong season coincides with autumn colour on the Saejae pass.

Highlights

  • Gamhong apples at their October peak, graded at 350 g or more and at least 16.5 Brix, sold by the growers with free tastings (17 farms on site in 2025)
  • Orchard apple picking, free at 13 farms in 2025 with picked fruit for sale (2026 terms not yet published)
  • Apple Promotion Hall with entries from the 29th Mungyeong Apple Contest (13 prize-winning farms in 2026)
  • Family zone with paper apple hats, sticker tattoos, cornhole, a tree playground and photo spots, plus Apple Day and apple giveaways
  • 10th Juheulsan song contest on Sunday 18 October 2026 at the Saejae outdoor stage, finals 15:00–17:00
  • Set at the entrance to Mungyeong Saejae, a forest trail through three late-16th-century gates, in the autumn-colour season

Who it suits. Best for families, fruit lovers and anyone visiting Mungyeong Saejae in the autumn-colour season who wants to taste and buy Gamhong, a variety rarely seen outside October; less suited to travelers who need English-language programmes or a large cultural festival, and the trip from Seoul takes about two hours each way.

Getting there

From Seoul

Bus: intercity buses from Dong Seoul Terminal to the Mungyeong bus stop (문경공용버스정류장) in Mungyeong-eup, the town at the foot of Saejae, about 11 a day: about 2 h 20 m (₩14,200) or 1 h 54 m on deluxe buses (₩19,800). From there free city buses 10-3 and 21 reach the park in about 10 minutes. Train: KTX-Eum from Pangyo (about 14 minutes from Gangnam on the Shinbundang Line) to Mungyeong Station, only about four trains a day, 1 h 34 m, ₩17,400; then free city bus 10-3, 21 or 21-2 (about 15 minutes) or a taxi. Do not buy a bus ticket to Jeomchon: that is the city centre, more than 20 km from Saejae.

From Busan

Buses link Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo, subway Line 1 Nopo Station) and Jeomchon Terminal in 2 h 47 m (₩27,900 deluxe); about 6 buses a day run from Jeomchon to Busan, so check the Busan departure times on the day. Busan Central lists no bus to the Mungyeong-eup stop, and Jeomchon is the city centre, more than 20 km from Saejae, so finish by free city bus 21 (about 45 minutes) or taxi as above. Alternatively, take KTX to Dong-Daegu and a bus from Dong-Daegu Terminal to Jeomchon (1 h 48 m–1 h 55 m, ₩16,700 deluxe).

Last leg from Mungyeong Station (KTX-Eum)

Jungbu Naeryuk Line (KTX-Eum from Pangyo). Not walkable; about 15 minutes by free city bus (10-3, 21 or 21-2, per a travel blog) or by taxi to Mungyeong Saejae

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was documented. Mungyeong's city buses have been free for everyone, tourists included, since 1 January 2025, and during the 2025 festival free buses ran between KTX Mungyeong Station and the festival site. A 2026 travel blog lists routes 10-3, 21 and 21-2 from Mungyeong Station (about 15 minutes), 10-3 and 21 from the Mungyeong bus stop (about 10 minutes) and 21 from Jeomchon terminal (about 45 minutes).

Getting home

The festival closes at 18:00. Only about four KTX-Eum trains a day run from Mungyeong Station to Pangyo (1 h 34 m), and buses from the Mungyeong bus stop to Dong Seoul stop in the evening. Korail's timetable changes on 1 November 2026, the festival's last day, so check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at Mungyeong Station, and the last bus at the Mungyeong bus stop, before the festival day; on a day trip, plan on an afternoon train rather than the last one.

Parking

Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park has car parks for about 2,500 vehicles (2022 figure), but too little parking was a main complaint in the city's review of the 2023 festival, so come by bus or train at weekends. A travel blog lists car-park hours of 08:30–17:30 and conflicting fee information (free, or ₩2,000 per car); fees were not verified.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

YearDatesStatusNotes
2027 Mid-October to early November 2027 is likely: the festival has opened on a Saturday in mid-October each year since at least 2023 (14–29 Oct 2023, 19–27 Oct 2024, 18–26 Oct 2025, 17 Oct–1 Nov 2026), timed to the Gamhong harvest. No 2027 dates had been announced as of 18 October 2026. expected 2026 dates were public by 1 September 2026. Whether 2027 keeps the 16-day format or returns to nine days was not announced.
2026 17 Oct – 1 Nov 2026 confirmed Around Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park; KTO gives 932 Saejae-ro, Mungyeong-eup.
2025 18–26 Oct 2025 ended Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park; apple and produce sales were extended to 2 November.
2024 19–27 Oct 2024 ended Moved to the lawn plaza at the First Gate (제1관문 잔디광장).
2023 14–29 Oct 2023 ended 18th edition, 16 days. About 460,000 visitors and an estimated ₩22 billion in direct economic effect. The city's review named too few original hands-on programmes and too little parking as the main weaknesses.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Ancient Road Museum (옛길박물관)Before

Mungyeong's free museum of Korea's old roads, reopened in 2009 in the former Mungyeong Saejae Museum, on the travel and culture that grew up along roads such as the Saejae pass you are about to walk. It is by the park entrance, so make it the first stop: open 09:00–18:00 to the end of October and 09:00–17:00 from 1 November (the festival's last day), last entry 30 minutes before closing. Visit before buying apples, so you are not carrying a heavy box round the galleries.

Getting there: On foot near the park entrance (Saejae-ro 944), a few minutes from the festival grounds; free

  • Mungyeong Saejae pass and its three gates (문경새재)Before or after

The Joseon-era road over the pass between Gyeongsang Province and Seoul: a gentle clay path of about 6.5 km along a stream, linking three stone gates (Juheulgwan, Jogokgwan and Joryeonggwan) built in the late 16th century. The round trip from the car park to the Second Gate is about 7 km, roughly two hours at an easy pace, so walk it in the morning or early afternoon and buy apples on the way back. Late-October days are short, so turn back from the Second Gate in good time.

Getting there: Starts at the festival grounds by the First Gate; on foot, free. Electric carts run from the entrance to the First Gate for a small fare

  • Mungyeongsaejae Open Set (문경새재 오픈세트장)Before or after

A KBS period-drama set built in 2000 in Yongsa-gol valley just behind the First Gate, with Goryeo- and Joseon-era palace halls, streets and village houses used for Taejo Wang Geon, Daejo Yeong, the film Scandal and Under the Queen's Umbrella. It is a short walk on from the gate, so it fits between the apple booths and the trail; adults pay a small admission. Daily opening hours were not published on the pages read, so go before mid-afternoon rather than at the end of the day.

Getting there: On foot from the festival grounds, just beyond the First Gate

  • Mungyeong Hot Springs (문경종합온천)After

A public bathhouse in Mungyeong-eup, opened in 2001, with an alkaline bath and a calcium-bicarbonate bath fed from about 750 m and 900 m underground, and a yellow-clay sauna; adult entry is under ₩10,000. It is open 06:00–20:00 with tickets sold until 19:30, so a soak after the festival closes at 18:00 fits, and it is under 1 km from the Mungyeong bus stop where the buses to Dong Seoul leave. Check the last bus at the bus stop before you go in.

Getting there: About 5 km: free city bus 10-3 or 21 back to the Mungyeong bus stop (about 10 min), then under 1 km on foot; or a short taxi ride
