What it is like
Sunchang, a small county in the south of Jeonbuk State, is the place most Koreans connect with gochujang, the fermented red-pepper paste. In 1997 the county gathered its gochujang makers into the Traditional Gochujang Folk Village, and the Sunchang Fermentation Theme Park now stands beside it. Since 2024 the county's Sunchang Fermentation Tourism Foundation has used both sites for a weekend festival about tteokbokki, the spicy rice-cake dish that gets its flavour from gochujang.
The first edition, in November 2024, had 18 booth teams. Renamed with 'Korea' in 2025, it grew to about 80 booths, 46 of them selling tteokbokki or snacks, and drew about 40,000 visitors over two days; in January 2026 Jeonbuk State rated it an excellent regional festival. The central idea is that each of Sunchang's 11 townships cooks its own version with local gochujang and a local twist, such as tomato, thistle gochujang, chestnut or enoki 'snowflake' tteokbokki, sold in small bowls, next to stalls from national brands, local businesses and university cooking teams.
The 2026 edition, the third, runs 21–22 November. The organizer lists 37 food booths in five zones, plus a food court for anyone who wants something other than tteokbokki. Around them are a fusion tteokbokki cooking show by chef Cho Kwang-hyo, known as Manjjitnam from Culinary Class Wars; sauce making with a gochujang master and a guided wellness walk (₩5,000 each); a free AR stamp hunt across the park and the folk village; a street-drawing contest; flash mobs, gugak, nanta and puppet shows; and free camping on the lawn on Saturday night with a well-known camping YouTuber. Entry is free.
It is a separate event from the larger Sunchang Jangryu (fermented sauce) Festival, which uses the same grounds in October (15–18 October in 2026).
The honest caveats: Sunchang is a long way from Seoul. Direct express buses run only about three times a day (3 h 19 m), and the last one back may leave before the festival ends (check it at the terminal), so most visitors from Seoul will need to stay overnight or travel via Gwangju, Namwon or Jeonju. In 2025 food was ordered by scanning a QR code with your phone, which confused some older visitors, and the menu was almost all tteokbokki. The festival site and programme listings are in Korean.
Highlights
- Tteokbokki from Sunchang's 11 townships, each made with local gochujang and its own twist (tomato, thistle gochujang, chestnut, enoki 'snowflake')
- Fusion tteokbokki cooking show by chef Cho Kwang-hyo ('Manjjitnam' of Culinary Class Wars) at 13:00 on both days in 2026, booked through Ticketlink
- Make tteokbokki sauce with a gochujang master at 13:00, 14:00 or 15:00 (₩5,000), or join the guided wellness walk (₩5,000)
- Free AR stamp hunt 'Find the Tteokbok-King' around the theme park and the Traditional Gochujang Folk Village
- Free overnight camping on the lawn behind Hongme Hall from 19:00 on Saturday 21 November 2026, with a camping YouTuber (bring your own tent)
- Stage programme: children's band parade at 10:00 on Saturday, flash-mob contest, gugak, tteokbokki-themed nanta and puppet show, bubble and magic shows
Who it suits. Best for food lovers, families with children and K-food fans who want a cheap, hands-on day of street food and gochujang culture in a small rural town; less suited to anyone hoping for a quick day trip from Seoul (direct buses are few and the last one back may leave before the festival closes) or a wide choice of food beyond tteokbokki and snacks.
Getting there
From Seoul
Direct express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Central City, Honam line) to Sunchang Public Bus Terminal: only about three a day, 3 h 19 m, ₩27,500 deluxe class; check the departure times at the terminal before the festival day. The grounds are about 3 km west of the terminal; take a taxi or a rural bus to the folk village (Minsok Maeul) stop. By rail: KTX from Yongsan to Jeonju (about 1 h 40 m, ₩31,600) or to Namwon on the Jeolla line, then an intercity bus; Namwon–Sunchang buses take 42 minutes (₩4,500, about ten a day), while Jeonju–Sunchang times were not verified. Or KTX to Gwangju Songjeong (₩42,000 from Yongsan), get to Gwangju U-Square terminal and take a bus to Sunchang (about 15 a day, 1 h 06 m, ₩5,600).
From Busan
No direct Busan–Sunchang bus was found, so go via Gwangju. Intercity bus from Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal (Sasang, Line 2 Sasang Station) to Gwangju U-Square: about 20 a day, 2 h 57 m, ₩28,300 deluxe or ₩36,800 premium. From U-Square, about 15 buses a day run to Sunchang Public Bus Terminal (1 h 06 m, ₩5,600); then take a taxi or a rural bus to the folk village (Minsok Maeul) stop, as above. Check the times at the terminals before the festival day.
Last leg from Namwon Station (KTX, Jeolla line), then bus
KTX / Jeolla Line. Not walkable; go to Namwon Public Bus Terminal for the 42-minute intercity bus to Sunchang, then about 3 km to the grounds
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was published for 2024–2026. The organizer's directions page lists rural bus routes that stop at Baeksan village and at the folk village (Minsok Maeul) stop, without times.
Getting home
Direct buses from Sunchang to Seoul Central City run only a few times a day, and the last one may leave before the festival closes at 17:00 on Sunday, so check it at the terminal. For a later return you must first reach Gwangju, Namwon or Jeonju (Sunchang-outbound times were not found, so ask at the terminal), then take an express bus from Gwangju U-Square to Seoul Central City, the KTX from Gwangju Songjeong to Suseo, or the KTX from Jeonju to Yongsan. A new KTX timetable starts on 1 November 2026 and the last trains for 22 November were not verified: check them in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before the festival day. Staying overnight, or joining Saturday's free camp, is easier.
Parking
In 2025 six car parks around the Sunchang Fermentation Theme Park served the festival (fees not stated), and the theme park has its own car park. No 2026 parking plan had been published by 18 October 2026.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
The indoor side of the festival venue: a microbe museum, a 'Yeast Sapiens' hall, a food-science hall and a children's science hall about fermentation, microbes and yeast. The halls are open 10:00–17:00 from November to February (last entry 16:30), so go during the day; on Saturday they close before the 19:00 camping starts. A normal adult ticket is ₩3,000 (₩4,000 combined); whether the halls are free during the festival is not stated. Tip: a warm place to break a cold day outdoors.
Getting there: At the festival venue (Jangnyu-ro 55), on foot; paid entry
- Sunchang Jangryu Museum (순창장류박물관)Before or after
A free county museum of Korean fermented sauces: the kinds and history of gochujang and doenjang and how they are made, introduced at the door by a gochujang-grandmother robot, with hands-on corners where you pound soybeans in a mortar and watch fermentation under a microscope. Winter hours are 09:00–17:00 with a 12:00–13:00 break (closed Mondays), so go in the late morning or early afternoon; on Sunday it closes with the festival. Tip: the easiest indoor stop with children.
Getting there: On foot, about 150 m from the grounds (Jangnyu-ro 43); free
- Traditional Gochujang Folk Village (순창전통고추장민속마을)After
A street of family gochujang makers that the county gathered in 1997, where shops sell gochujang, doenjang, soy sauce and pickles. The 2026 festival extends into the village (the AR stamp tour runs through it), and visiting hours are 09:00–19:00, so after the Sunday close at 17:00 there is still time to buy a jar to take home. Tip: shop last so you are not carrying jars round the festival, but leave time to reach the bus terminal about 3 km away.
Getting there: On foot; part of the 2026 festival grounds, about 350 m from the Jangryu Museum
- Getting awayAfter
Leaving is the hard part: the grounds are about 3 km from Sunchang bus terminal, no festival shuttle has been published, and the few direct buses to Seoul may leave before the festival closes. Check return times at the terminal when you arrive, allow for a taxi or rural bus back to it, and for a later trip via Gwangju, Namwon or Jeonju check the last KTX in the Korail+ app (코레일+), or stay over.
Questions travelers ask
When is the Sunchang Korea Tteokbokki Festa 2026?
21–22 November 2026 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Sunchang Fermentation Theme Park and the Traditional Gochujang Folk Village. Saturday starts at 10:00 and continues with overnight camping from 19:00; Sunday runs 10:00–17:00.
Is the festival free?
Yes, entry is free. You pay for food (2026 prices are not yet published) and for some activities: sauce making and the wellness tour cost ₩5,000 each, while the AR stamp tour, street drawing, stopwatch game and Saturday camping are free.
How do I get to Sunchang from Seoul?
Direct express buses run from Seoul Central City (Express Bus Terminal, Honam line) about three times a day and take 3 h 19 m (₩27,500); check the times at the terminal. Or take KTX to Namwon, Jeonju or Gwangju Songjeong and continue by bus; Namwon–Sunchang is 42 minutes. The grounds are about 3 km from Sunchang bus terminal.
Can I visit as a day trip from Seoul?
Only just. Direct buses run only a few times a day each way, and the last one back may leave before the festival closes, so check both at the terminal. Returning via Gwangju or Jeonju allows a later trip home, but bus times from Sunchang to those cities were not verified, so most visitors stay overnight.
Do I need to book anything?
Not for entry. The chef cooking show, sauce making, wellness tour, AR tour, street drawing, stopwatch game and Saturday camping are booked through Ticketlink from the festival site; booking dates were not stated.
Is this the same as the Sunchang Jangryu Festival?
No. The Sunchang Jangryu (fermented sauce) Festival is a separate, larger event on the same grounds in October; in 2026 it ran 15–18 October, 09:00–21:00.

What we could not confirm
- Japanese and Chinese names: no KTO or official foreign-language name was found (the KTO Japanese data page shows the Korean name only).
- 2026 food prices and whether QR-code phone ordering returns; the ₩2,000 bowl price is from 2025.
- Return buses from Sunchang to Namwon, Gwangju, Jeonju and Jeongeup: only the inbound direction was found. KTX times and fares to Namwon and Jeongeup, and the Jeonju–Sunchang bus, were not verified; direct buses from Dong Seoul or Seoul Nambu were not checked.
- Taxi time and fare from Sunchang bus terminal to the grounds, and times of the rural buses to the folk village stop.
- 2026 parking plan, any festival shuttle, and the Saturday closing time for food booths (the schedule shows Saturday as '10:00 to next day' because of camping).
- Ticketlink booking dates, capacity and the cooking-show price, and whether foreign visitors can book without a Korean phone number.
- The 2026 schedule page's layout is hard to read; one or two programme slots may be grouped differently from the organizer's intent, so check the official schedule.
- Last train back on the festival date under the timetable in force that day (Jeonju→Yongsan and Gwangju Songjeong→Suseo on Sunday 22 Nov 2026), and current Sunchang–Seoul direct bus times: bus times were found only on a third-party mirror of the national timetable feed, and the 1 Nov 2026 KTX timetable could not be read here.
- Pages that could not be read: a 2024 Etoday weekend-festival article, a Yeollin Sunchang opinion piece (idxno 46425) and Jeonbuk Ilbo's 17 Nov 2025 wrap-up (rate-limited), and Sunchang County's tourism site.
- From Busan: Busan Seobu–Namwon buses may be quicker than changing at Gwangju; not yet checked.
- Sunchang→Seoul Central City direct bus times for 21–22 Nov 2026: no operator or organizer source was found on 29 Oct 2026 (only a third-party mirror of the national timetable feed), so the 15:30 last-bus time was removed from the description; check at the terminal and add verified times in the pre-event recheck.
- Whether the Fermentation Theme Park's paid indoor halls are open free during the festival, and whether the Jangryu Museum keeps its 12:00–13:00 break on festival days.
