What it is like

Jangdan beans are soybeans grown in northern Paju, much of it in the civilian control zone just south of the border with North Korea. Paju has about 1,100 hectares of bean fields, the largest area in Gyeonggi-do, and a local white soybean, Jangdan Baengmok, was chosen in 1913 as the first soybean variety recommended for planting across Korea. Paju City has held a festival for the harvest since 1997 on the plaza at Imjingak, the peace park and Korean War memorial site on the Imjin River. It came back in 2022 after a four-year break and has been picked as one of Gyeonggi Province's representative tourism festivals every year from 2019 to 2025.

For three days, Friday to Sunday, farmers sell the new crop direct, from white baektae to black seoritae, along with tofu, rice cakes, bean taffy and other bean products. In 2025 the grounds had four zones: Jangdan Sambaek, with an exhibition hall on the bean and a shop for traceable Jangdan beans; Alkongdalkong, for processed farm products, freshly made tofu and a local food stall; Nolkong, for hands-on activities such as making a small meju (fermented soybean block), threshing beans with a flail and keeping what you thresh, popping beans and making kimchi; and Salkong, a farmers' market laid out like an old village market. On stage there were a Jangdan bean song contest for residents, an outdoor madanggeuk play about the bean, street performances and a youth random-play dance, plus a cooking contest using the beans.

This is a working market more than a show. The 2022 edition drew about 180,000 people and sold ₩2.08 billion of produce and food, including 73 tonnes of beans, and in 2024 the city reported ₩2.6 billion in sales. In 2024 the organizers also offered free delivery and a half-price parcel service for heavy purchases, and lent wheelchairs, strollers and shopping baskets.

Honest caveats: almost everything is in Korean, and no English programme was found. Late November on the open plaza by the river is cold. Traffic builds on the roads into Imjingak, so the city runs a shuttle bus from Munsan Station on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line; Imjingang Station is closer but has only a few trains a day. The 2026 dates, 27–29 November, come from a May 2026 feature in Gyeonggi Province's magazine credited to Paju City and from the 2026 poster printed in K-Festival magazine's October 2026 issue, which gives Imjingak Plaza as the venue and mentions a free shuttle bus from Munsan Station; as of 21 October 2026 Paju City's own festival page still showed 2025 and no hours or programme had been published, so check again before you travel.

Highlights

  • Farmers selling the new Jangdan soybean crop direct, from white baektae to black seoritae, with traceable beans at the Jangdan Sambaek shop (2025)
  • Hands-on Nolkong zone: make a small meju block, thresh beans with a flail and take them home, pop beans or make kimchi (some activities free, some paid)
  • Freshly made Jangdan bean tofu, bean rice cakes, bean taffy and Jangdan bean chocolate, plus restaurants using Paju produce
  • Jangdan bean song contest, an outdoor madanggeuk play about the bean, street performances and a youth random-play dance
  • Salkong farmers' market laid out like a traditional village market
  • Set at Imjingak, the peace park and Korean War memorial site on the Imjin River, about 212 m from the Imjingak cable car

Who it suits. Best for food lovers, home cooks and residents of Korea who want to buy soybeans and tofu straight from farmers, and for travelers pairing a market day with a visit to Imjingak and the DMZ area; less suited to anyone expecting a big stage show or English-language activities, or who cannot carry heavy bags of beans home.

Getting there

From Seoul

Take the Gyeongui–Jungang Line (Seoul Metropolitan Subway) to Munsan Station, for example from Seoul Station, Hongik University or Digital Media City; it takes about 1 h 15 min to 1 h 40 min depending on where you start. During the festival a circular shuttle bus links Munsan Station with the Imjingak grounds (free in 2025); allow about two hours in all. A few shuttle trains continue from Munsan to Imjingang Station beside Imjingak (2 a day on weekdays, 4 at weekends), so check the time before relying on one. Gyeonggi Province also lists bus 9710 from Gwanghwamun to Munsan Station, about 2 hours.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Digital Media City or Hongik University Station, then the Gyeongui–Jungang Line to Munsan Station and the festival shuttle bus to Imjingak.

Last leg from Munsan Station

Gyeongui–Jungang Line. Not walkable; take the festival shuttle bus to Imjingak (2024–2025). Imjingang Station (임진강역) is beside Imjingak but has only 2 shuttle trains a day on weekdays and 4 at weekends.

Festival shuttle

Circular shuttle buses linked Munsan Station on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line with the festival grounds in 2024 and 2025, running frequently; the Herald describes the 2025 service as free. For 2026, the poster printed in K-Festival magazine's October 2026 issue mentions a free shuttle bus from Munsan Station; no timetable or last run from Imjingak has been published, and Paju City has not yet announced the 2026 service.

Getting home

The festival closed at 17:00 in 2024 and 2025, hours before the last Gyeongui–Jungang trains leave Munsan for Seoul. Trains that run to Seoul Station itself are about hourly outside rush hours. The last festival shuttle from Imjingak to Munsan has not been published, so ask on site, and check the last train back in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at Munsan Station before you go.

Parking

Imjingak has about 2,100 parking spaces (KTO data), charged at a flat daily rate. During the festival the city adds temporary car parks and traffic staff, but the roads into Imjingak get congested, so the shuttle from Munsan Station is easier.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
