What it is like
Hwaseong Haenggung is the detached palace King Jeongjo built in the late 18th century at the centre of his new fortress town of Suwon, and the Korea Tourism Organization ranks it as the largest and most formal of Korea's haenggung. By day it is an ordinary heritage visit (09:00–18:00, open every day). On weekend evenings from spring to autumn, Suwon City keeps it open after dark as a lit-up walk through the courtyards. The night opening is not new: Saturday evening concerts in 2011 were billed as part of it, the 2019 run lasted from 2 July to 28 September, and since at least 2023 it has carried the name 'Dalbit Hwadam' (roughly 'flower talk by moonlight') and run from early May to late October.
The 2026 season, themed 'stories of flowers under the moon', runs from 1 May to 1 November on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 18:00–21:30, with tickets and entry until 21:00. The palace is divided into four themed areas: a welcome light zone, an immersive light zone, a play yard and a quiet space for reflection, with flower sculptures, lighting, 3D hologram and laser media art, 'butterfly' drones and a photo studio. A night version of the Muye 24-gi martial-arts display played at Yuyeotaek from May to August, its first regular run as part of the night opening. From 4 September to 31 October two extras run on Fridays and Saturdays, 19:00–20:30: a court tea-and-sweets experience themed on Lady Hyegyeong, Jeongjo's mother, with a small concert (₩50,000 for two), and a free palace walk led by local resident actors. A free guided heritage walk also climbs from Sinpungnu gate to Seojangdae on Fridays to Sundays and holidays at 18:00 and 20:00.
Entry is cheap: ₩2,000 for adults, and free for anyone in hanbok and for children 6 and under. The caveats: this is a self-paced stroll, not a staged show, so book one of the extras if you want a guide or a performance; the courtyards are mostly sand; no English information on the night programmes was found; the city warned that the schedule could change during the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival (4–11 October 2026), when the festival used the palace for its own 'Haenggung Yahwa' night performance; and weekend parking near the palace is hard to find. As of 19 October 2026, the remaining nights are 23–25 October and 30 October–1 November.
Highlights
- The palace courtyards after dark, lit with flower sculptures, lighting and 3D hologram and laser media art under the 2026 theme 'Dalbit Hwadam'
- Four themed zones in 2026 (welcome light, immersive light, play yard, contemplation space), plus 'butterfly' drones and the Yunmu photo studio
- Free entry in hanbok, modernised hanbok included; otherwise ₩2,000 for adults
- Fridays and Saturdays, 4 Sep–31 Oct 2026, 19:00–20:30: Lady Hyegyeong court tea experience with a small concert (₩50,000 for two, ₩70,000 for three) and a free palace walk with resident actors
- Free heritage commentary walk from Sinpungnu gate to Seojangdae on Fridays–Sundays and holidays at 18:00 and 20:00
- Muye 24-gi martial-arts night display at Yuyeotaek, May–August 2026
- Photo spots picked by visitors: the moon-rabbit sculpture, the peony sculptures behind Nangnamheon and the view from below Mirohanjeong
Who it suits. Best for travellers based in Seoul or Suwon who want an easy, inexpensive evening at a UNESCO-listed site, couples, families with small children (under-7s go free) and anyone wearing hanbok, who also gets in free. Less suited to visitors expecting a large staged show or English guiding, and it only opens Friday to Sunday and on public holidays.
Getting there
From Seoul
Take subway Line 1 from Seoul Station to Suwon Station, about an hour (53–68 minutes on Korail's timetable), and leave by Exit 4. From the Novotel stop take bus 11 or 13 to the Hwaseong Haenggung stop (bus 13: six stops, about 10 minutes), then walk about 5 minutes to the palace; buses 60 and 7-2 leave from Exit 7. From Gangnam, the Suin-Bundang Line runs from Seolleung to Suwon Station in 74–75 minutes on most trains.
From Busan
KTX, ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains on the Gyeongbu line stop at Suwon Station; from there take bus 11 or 13 from Exit 4 to the Hwaseong Haenggung stop.
From Incheon Airport
Airport bus to Suwon, or AREX to Seoul Station and Line 1 to Suwon Station, then bus 11 or 13 to the Hwaseong Haenggung stop.
Last leg from Suwon Station
Line 1 / Suin-Bundang Line / KTX, Exit 4 (buses 11 and 13); Exit 7 (buses 60 and 7-2). Take a bus: 11 or 13 from the Novotel stop at Exit 4 to the Hwaseong Haenggung stop (about 10 minutes, 3.1 km), then about 5 minutes on foot
Getting home
The palace closes at 21:30; take bus 11 or 13 back to Suwon Station for Line 1 to Seoul. Last-train times from Suwon were not checked, so confirm in a transit app if you stay for a late dinner nearby.
Parking
Suwon City lists a car park for the palace at 18 Haenggung-ro (38-6 Namchang-dong), open 24 hours and card only: ₩900 for the first 30 minutes, then ₩400 per 10 minutes, ₩14,000 for a day (small cars). A visitor in 2026 reported that spaces are hard to find at weekends.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
Hwaseong Fortress's command post on Paldalsan, the hill directly above the palace. The night opening's free heritage commentary walk climbs there from Sinpungnu, the palace gate, at 18:00 and 20:00 on Fridays to Sundays (booked on the Suwon Cultural Foundation website); its length was not published, so take the 18:00 walk to be sure of reaching the palace before last entry at 21:00. The path climbs the hill, so wear shoes with grip.
Getting there: Uphill on foot from Sinpungnu, the palace gate, with the free guided commentary walk
A free Saturday-evening night market in Suwon's Nammun Market district below Paldalmun, the fortress's south gate: food stalls run by market merchants, food trucks, an outdoor dining yard, a flea market, busking and DJ sets. Its last night of 2026, Saturday 31 October (Joseon Ghost Day), runs 17:00–22:00, so eat there before the palace or walk down after last entry at 21:00. Food prices and payment methods were not published.
Getting there: On foot, about 600 m in a straight line from Haenggung Square to the Paldalmun plaza; walking time not documented
- Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion (방화수류정)After
A pavilion on the Hwaseong Fortress wall above the Yongyeon pond, completed in 1794 as a lookout and command post; the wall path is lit after dark, and wall, pavilion and pond make one of Suwon's best-known night views. The fortress walls are open at all hours and free, so walk there after the palace closes at 21:30. You end up further from Suwon Station than at the palace, so check the last Line 1 train first and allow for a bus or taxi back.
Getting there: On foot through the Haengridan-gil alleys behind the palace and along the fortress wall, about 15 minutes; free

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a Wikimedia Commons photograph of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace by day (Adil, CC BY-SA 4.0). · 2026-10-21 — Tense: the Japanese text of the usual season no longer describes the running 2026 season as over. · 2026-10-27 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: no train, bus or shuttle clock times in the record, so nothing to verify or remove (last Line 1 train from Suwon still not checked); prices: unchanged; 2026 night fares, dates and hours rechecked on Suwon City's own page.
