What it is like
Chunhyangjeon, the tale of Seong Chunhyang and Yi Mong-ryong, the magistrate's son she stays faithful to while a cruel new governor tries to force her into his service, is the love story every Korean knows, and it is set in Namwon. The festival grew out of a memorial rite for Chunhyang that local notables and traditional musicians started in 1931, under Japanese colonial rule, at a shrine they built for her; the rite was held on Dano, the day the lovers meet in the story. It is billed as the oldest festival in Korea still running. The culture ministry named it one of Korea's 10 major festivals in 1997.
The grounds are Gwanghallu Garden, the Joseon-era pavilion garden in the middle of town with its Ojakgyo bridge, Chunhyang Shrine and the house of Chunhyang's mother Wolmae, and the banks of the Yocheon stream beside it, where the main stage, food zones and night lighting line the water. The pavilion was first built as Gwangtongru by Hwang Hui in 1419, renamed Gwanghallu in 1444, burned in 1597 and rebuilt in 1626; in April 2026 the Korea Heritage Service announced a plan to raise it from Treasure to National Treasure.
The programme mixes ritual, contest and spectacle. The Global Chunhyang Contest, the pageant long known as Miss Chunhyang, holds its final on the eve of the festival; the Chunhyang memorial rite (춘향제향) opens it; and the Daedong-gil street parade brings residents of every district of the city onto the streets, run since 2026 as a competition called the Chunhyang Carnival. Pansori and gugak fill the stages all week, from master singers at the pavilion every day to the national Chunhyang gugak competition. Evenings bring concerts, a lantern procession and lights on the pavilion and its pond. In 2026 there were also a hanbok fashion show, a traditional-wedding experience, a charity run and an illustration exhibition.
Honest caveats: crowds are very large (about 1.51 million visits in 2026, a record); programmes and announcements are in Korean; the garden itself charges by day; and Namwon Station is about 3 km from the grounds, so plan on a taxi.
Highlights
- Global Chunhyang Contest final on the festival eve (30 April, 19:30 in 2026, on the Yocheon-ro special stage; first prize ₩15 million), the pageant long known as Miss Chunhyang
- Chunhyang memorial rite (춘향제향), the 1931 ceremony the festival grew from, held with the official opening (1 May in 2025)
- Daedong-gil street parade of residents from Namwon's 23 districts, staged in 2026 as a competition, the Chunhyang Carnival
- Pansori and gugak all week: master singers at Gwanghallu pavilion on all seven days, the Korea Chunhyang Gugak Competition, and KBS Gugak Hanmadang on a special stage (4 May 2026)
- Gwanghallu by night: lantern procession, lit pavilion and pond, and free garden entry from 18:00 (April–October)
- Hanbok fashion show, the Chunmong Love Story traditional-wedding experience and a food zone of Namwon dishes
Who it suits. Best for travellers interested in Korean traditional culture, pansori and the Chunhyang story, and for anyone who wants a spring evening in a lantern-lit Joseon garden; families get a hands-on zone. Less suited to anyone who dislikes heavy crowds (well over a million visits a year) or needs programmes in English.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan Station to Namwon Station on the Jeolla Line: 25 trains a day in October 2026. Most KTX runs take about 2 hours (fastest 1 h 53 m; a few take up to 2 h 53 m), ₩36,400 standard class (October 2026 fare, after the 1 Sep 2026 KTX–SRT merger; book on Korail's site or the Korail+ app). Namwon Station is about 3 km by road from Gwanghallu Garden; taxis wait outside. Or take an express bus from Seoul Central City Terminal (Honam line) to Namwon: 7 a day, 3 h 19 m, ₩30,000 deluxe or ₩20,400 standard; the Namwon bus terminal is about 1 km from Gwanghallu Garden.
From Incheon Airport
Namwon's express bus terminal lists two buses a day to Incheon Airport (about 3 h 20 m to Terminal 1); times in the airport-to-Namwon direction were not checked. Otherwise go into Seoul and take the KTX from Yongsan.
Last leg from Namwon Station
Korail Jeolla Line (KTX, ITX and Mugunghwa). About 3 km by road to Gwanghallu Garden; take a taxi from the rank outside the station (city-bus routes were not checked)
Getting home
The 2026 festival ran until 22:30. KTX trains from Namwon to Yongsan take about 2 hours, and express buses to Seoul Central City 3 h 19 m; Namwon Station is about 3 km by taxi from the grounds. Train and bus times for the 2027 festival dates are not out yet, so this page gives no last-train or last-bus time: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the station, and the last bus at the Namwon terminal, before you go.
Parking
Gwanghallu Garden car park: about 213 cars and 66 large vehicles; a daily fee of a few thousand won. In 2025 the city added temporary car parks and traffic control for the festival; no 2026 parking map was found.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
A free city-run art museum in the woods above Chunhyang Theme Park, opened in 2018 around works donated by the Namwon-born painter Kim Byung-jong, with his literary papers and a book café of about 2,000 art, literature and humanities titles. It is open 10:00–18:00 and closed on Mondays (the next day when Monday is a holiday), so go in the morning or early afternoon of a festival day that is not a Monday. Pair it with the theme park on the way back down to the grounds.
Getting there: About 2 km from Gwanghallu Garden: a short taxi ride, or about 1 km on foot from Chunhyang Theme Park; free
- Chunhyang Theme Park (춘향테마파크)Before or after
A park that tells the Chunhyang story in five sections, from the lovers' first meeting and pledge to her trials and the closing celebration, with a swing site, a replica prison, a traditional-culture experience hall and the Namwon Hyangto Museum. From April to October it is open 09:00–22:00 (adults ₩3,000; the museum inside closes on Mondays), so it fits before the evening programme or after dinner. Keep the ticket: a same-day theme park ticket earns a discount at Gwanghallu Garden.
Getting there: About 1 km from Gwanghallu Garden, across the Yocheon stream: on foot or a short taxi ride
- Namwon Chueotang Street (남원 추어탕 거리)Before or after
A cluster of about 20 restaurants around Gwanghallu Garden serving chueotang, Namwon's signature loach soup: whole loaches ground with vegetables and doenjang into a thick stew, each house with its own recipe. Eat there for lunch or an early dinner before the evening programme, or before you head for the station; hours and closing days vary by restaurant. The KTO listing for the street says cards are not accepted, so carry some cash.
Getting there: On foot, about 350 m from Gwanghallu (KTO); right by the festival grounds

- Japanese name: no KTO Japanese name for the festival was found (KTO's Japanese data uses 広寒楼苑 for the garden). The Chinese names 春香祭 and 南原春香節 come from KTO's Chinese descriptions of Gwanghallu Garden, not from festival listings.
- Festival shuttle buses and the 2026 parking and traffic-control plan were not published on the pages opened.
- Taxi time and fare from Namwon Station, and city-bus routes from the station and bus terminal to Gwanghallu, were not checked.
- From Busan: Namwon's express terminal lists no Busan route; intercity buses from Busan Seobu (Sasang) to Namwon were not checked.
- Incheon Airport → Namwon bus times were not checked (only Namwon → airport).
- Gwanghallu's upgrade to National Treasure was announced as planned on 25 Apr 2026; whether it has been finalised was not checked.
- Rail and bus frequencies, journey times and fares are from a third-party mirror of the national timetable feed (October 2026); a new KTX timetable starts on 1 Nov 2026.
- Accessibility, rain policy, pets and card payment were not found.
- No licensed photo recorded.
- Last train from Namwon to Yongsan and last express bus to Seoul Central City on the festival dates under the timetables in force that day
- Chunhyang Theme Park and Kim Byung-jong Museum hours and fees, and the Chueotang Street details, come from KTO data mirrors and a listing site; no Namwon City page for them was opened, and walking times from Gwanghallu were not checked.
