What it is like
Naganeupseong is a walled county town from the Joseon period on the Nagan plain, west of central Suncheon. It is usually dated to 1397 and counted among Korea's three best-known eupseong (fortified county seats), with Haemi and Gochang. Unlike most heritage villages it is still lived in: more than 290 thatched houses stand inside the walls, home to about 100 households and some 230 residents, next to nine surviving buildings of the old county administration such as the Gaeksa guesthouse, the Dongheon magistrate's office and Nangminru pavilion. The town was designated Historic Site No. 302 in 1983, was added to UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list in 2011, and draws about 1.2 million visitors a year.
The Folk Culture Festival, first held in 1994, is the village's big October weekend. The 31st edition runs on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October 2026, 11:00–17:00, under the theme 'Nagan (樂安): building joy, linking generations'. It opens with the procession of a newly appointed Nagan magistrate, and a gate-guard changing ceremony and a mounted general's patrol recreate the town as a working county seat. Residents stage Baekjung nori, a farmers' festivity, and reenact the building of the town wall. The programme also has tightrope walking, traditional martial arts, a changgeuk (Korean opera) about Kim Bin-gil, pansori and gayageum byeongchang, and a popular-music show called Nagan 樂 Festa. Visitors can join a giant tug-of-war, ssireum and arm-wrestling contests and yut games, and try making hopae (Joseon identity tags), straw crafts and archery, with local food booths throughout.
The caveats: entry is the village's normal paid ticket, the programmes are in Korean only, and no hour-by-hour schedule had been published by 18 October 2026. The village is about 25 minutes by road from Suncheon Station and is served by a few city bus routes whose timings were not verified, so a taxi is the simplest link if you are combining the festival with the KTX.
Highlights
- Opening procession of a newly appointed Nagan magistrate, with a gate-guard changing ceremony and a mounted general's patrol
- A lived-in Joseon walled town: more than 290 thatched houses and about 230 residents, Historic Site No. 302 since 1983
- Resident-led Baekjung nori and a reenactment of building the town wall
- Stage programme: tightrope walking, traditional martial arts, a Kim Bin-gil changgeuk, pansori, gayageum byeongchang and the Nagan 樂 Festa pop show
- Contests anyone can join: giant tug-of-war, ssireum, arm wrestling and yut nori
- Hands-on hopae (identity tag) making, straw crafts and archery, plus local food booths and traditional goods for sale
- The walk along the top of the town wall, about an hour, with views over the thatched roofs
Who it suits. Best for travelers curious about Joseon-era village life, families who want hands-on games and crafts, and photographers; less suited to visitors who need English-language programmes or evening events, since the festival runs 11:00–17:00 and everything is in Korean.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan to Suncheon: about 19 trains a day in mid-October 2026, taking 2 h 24 m–3 h 27 m (most 2 h 33 m–2 h 50 m), ₩42,300 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger; a few trains also run from Suseo. From Suncheon, city bus 16 runs via Suncheon Station and Suncheon Bus Terminal to Naganeupseong, and routes 61, 63 and 68 also stop at the Naganeupseong stop, about a minute's walk from the village; bus journey times and frequencies were not verified. A taxi or car from Suncheon Station takes about 25 minutes.
From Busan
Intercity bus from Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal (Sasang, Line 2 Sasang Station) to Suncheon Bus Terminal: 14 a day, mostly 2 h 38 m, ₩17,000 regular, ₩22,000 deluxe or ₩28,600 premium. Gyeongjeon Line trains also run from Bujeon Station to Suncheon Station 4 times a day, ₩12,400 by Mugunghwa or ₩19,200 by Saemaeul; the trains back take 2 h 39 m–3 h 22 m. Check first and last departures at the terminal or in the Korail+ app (코레일+). Then city bus 16, which also stops at Suncheon Bus Terminal, or a taxi to Naganeupseong as above.
Last leg from Suncheon Station
Korail Jeolla Line (KTX from Yongsan; a few from Suseo). Not walkable: about 25 minutes by car or taxi, or city bus 16 (via Suncheon Station and Suncheon Bus Terminal) to the Naganeupseong stop, about a minute's walk from the village
Getting home
The festival programme ends at 17:00 and the village closes at 18:00 in October. KTX trains from Suncheon to Yongsan run into the late evening, so a same-day return to Seoul is realistic; Suncheon–Suseo trains are only a few a day, so plan on Yongsan. The times for 24–25 October 2026 have not been confirmed from Korail's timetable for those days: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at Suncheon Station before you go. Bus times from Naganeupseong back to Suncheon were not verified; a taxi takes about 25 minutes.
Parking
Three free car parks at the village. Festival overflow parking and traffic arrangements for 2026 were not announced on the pages opened.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
- Ppurigipeunnamu Museum (뿌리깊은나무박물관)Before or after
Suncheon's city museum of the collection of the late Han Chang-gi: about 6,500 objects from the Bronze Age to the post-liberation years, including old Hangul books, clothing, pottery, folk paintings and crafts. It is about 300 m from the village, so slip in before the 11:00 start or between programmes: last entry is 16:30 on winter hours (17:30 on summer hours), and it closes on Mondays, not on the festival weekend. Tip: adult entry is ₩1,000.
Getting there: On foot from the village, about 300 m (about 5 minutes)
Korea's best-known coastal wetland: about 5.4 km² of reed beds where the Dongcheon and Isacheon streams run out to the mudflats, crossed by a wooden boardwalk, with Yongsan Observatory about 1.5 km uphill (about an hour there and back) for the view over the channels at sunset. In October ticket sales end at 18:00 and the sun sets before then, so leave Naganeupseong by mid-afternoon rather than at the 17:00 close. Tip: adult entry ₩10,000; Suncheon Station is 15–20 minutes away by taxi.
Getting there: Taxi via central Suncheon, roughly 40–45 minutes (about 25 minutes to Suncheon Station, then 15–20 more); fare not published
Questions travelers ask
When is the Naganeupseong Folk Culture Festival 2026?
Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October 2026, 11:00–17:00, inside Naganeupseong Folk Village in Suncheon. It is the 31st edition; the 2025 festival ran 17–19 October and the 2023 festival 13–15 October.
Is the Naganeupseong Folk Culture Festival free?
No. The festival uses the village's normal ticket: ₩4,000 adults, ₩2,500 teenagers and military, ₩1,500 children in the organizer's 2026 listing. Visitors 65 and over enter free; no festival-period discount was announced for 2026.
How do I get to Naganeupseong from Seoul?
Take the KTX from Yongsan to Suncheon (₩42,300; most trains 2 h 33 m–2 h 50 m). From Suncheon, city bus 16 runs via the station and the bus terminal to the Naganeupseong stop, and buses 61, 63 and 68 also stop there; a taxi takes about 25 minutes.
What happens at the festival?
The Nagan magistrate's arrival procession opens it, followed by a gate-guard changing ceremony, a mounted general's patrol, resident-led Baekjung nori and a wall-building reenactment. There are tightrope, martial-arts, changgeuk, pansori and gayageum performances, a pop stage, a giant tug-of-war, ssireum and arm-wrestling contests, and hopae making, straw crafts and archery.
Do people really live in Naganeupseong?
Yes. About 100 households, some 230 residents, live in the village's more than 290 thatched houses. It has been Historic Site No. 302 since 1983 and is on UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list (2011).
What time is the last train back to Seoul?
Check it in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at Suncheon Station before you go: the times for 24–25 October 2026 have not been confirmed from Korail's timetable for those days. KTX trains from Suncheon to Yongsan run into the late evening, so a day trip from Seoul works; Suncheon–Suseo trains are only a few a day, so plan on Yongsan.
When is the 2027 festival?
Not announced as of 18 October 2026. Expect a weekend in October 2027, in line with 13–15 Oct 2023, 17–19 Oct 2025 and 24–25 Oct 2026.
