What it is like
Jinnamgwan stands on a rise above Yeosu's old harbour, on the site of the headquarters of the Jeolla Left Naval Command, the Joseon navy base that Admiral Yi Sun-sin led when the Japanese invasion began in 1592. The hall was completed in 1599 and is National Treasure No. 304: 15 bays wide and 5 deep on 70 columns, it is described as the largest single-storey wooden government building in Korea. A dismantling and repair that began in December 2015 took about ten years and cost about ₩19.5 billion; the hall was due to reopen in May 2025.
In autumn 2026 Jinnamgwan is the last of 12 host sites in the Korea Heritage Service's national heritage media-art programme, which moves between historic sites, is in its sixth year in 2026 and grew from 8 sites in 2025. Under the theme 'Jinnamgwan, rebuilt in light' (진남관, 빛으로 재건하다), three linked pieces run every evening from 19:30 to 21:30: projection on the hall itself, a light piece on the stele pavilion and protected tree at Gosodae, and a media façade on the turtle-ship replica in Yi Sun-sin Square that shows the ship ploughing through heavy seas. The content draws on Yi's war diary, the Nanjung Ilgi, his care for ordinary people and the turtle ship's voyages. In the relics exhibition hall at Jinnamgwan you can talk with an AI 'metahuman' Yi Sun-sin on a large screen; there is also content made from visitors' photos, a stamp tour of Jinnamgwan, the Tarubi stele and the turtle ship, and, according to the national announcement, a Jeolla Left Naval Command VR experience. On weekends, extra hands-on programmes and a flea market are added. Entry is free and no booking is listed.
The three spots are close together in the old harbour district, with Jinnamgwan about 100 m up the hill from the harbourside plaza, so the show combines easily with dinner by the harbour, the Namdo K-Garden Festival (to 31 October) or the Yeosu World Island Expo (to 4 November).
Honest caveats: the show is closed on Tuesdays, and KTO's data adds special closure days for the Yeosu–Suncheon 10·19 memorial period without giving the dates, so check before going in the days around 19 October. Information is in Korean only. From Seoul it is a long trip: the KTX takes about 3 hours and the last trains back leave Yeosu EXPO in the late evening, so a same-day return may mean leaving before the end. Yeosu City also holds a separate summer heritage night (국가유산 야행) around Jinnamgwan; that is a different event.
Highlights
- Projection on Jinnamgwan, a naval hall completed in 1599 and National Treasure No. 304, open again after a ten-year dismantling and repair begun in December 2015
- Three light pieces on one short walk: the Jinnamgwan hall, the stele pavilion and protected tree at Gosodae, and a media façade of the turtle-ship replica sailing through heavy seas on Yi Sun-sin Square
- Free, every evening 19:30–21:30 from 9 October to 8 November 2026, except Tuesdays
- Talk with an AI 'metahuman' Admiral Yi Sun-sin on a large screen in the Jinnamgwan relics exhibition hall
- Stamp tour of Jinnamgwan, the Tarubi stele and the turtle ship; extra hands-on programmes and a flea market at weekends
- Yeosu's first turn in the national heritage media-art programme, the last of its 12 host sites in 2026
Who it suits. Best for travelers spending a night or two in Yeosu, for the harbour, the World Island Expo or the Namdo K-Garden Festival, who want a free, easy evening walk with a history theme, and for families whose children like the turtle ship and the AI Admiral Yi. Less suited to a same-day trip from Seoul, since the last KTX trains leave Yeosu in the late evening, or to visitors who need English commentary.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan Station to Yeosu EXPO Station, the end of the Jeolla Line: about 2 h 50 m–3 h 10 m, ₩45,400 standard class (October 2026 fare, after the 1 Sep 2026 KTX–SRT merger; book on Korail's site or the Korail+ app). From the station take a taxi to Jinnamgwan or Yi Sun-sin Square in the old harbour district (journey time not published); in the daytime the city's double-decker tour bus also runs from the station to Yi Sun-sin Square (₩5,000 adult, daytime departures only). Or take an express bus from Seoul Central City Terminal (Honam line) to Yeosu Bus Terminal: about 11 a day, about 4 h 10 m, ₩39,600 deluxe or ₩51,400 premium; city bus 111 runs from the bus terminal past Jinnamgwan.
From Busan
The Yeosu Bus Terminal timetable lists about 10 intercity buses a day to Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal and 4 to Busan Central (Nopo) Terminal in October 2026, so the same routes link Busan with Yeosu; journey times and fares were not checked. From Yeosu Bus Terminal, city bus 111 runs past Jinnamgwan.
From Incheon Airport
Yeosu Bus Terminal lists 4 departures a day to each of Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2 (October 2026); times in the airport-to-Yeosu direction were not checked. Otherwise go into Seoul and take the KTX from Yongsan.
Last leg from Yeosu EXPO Station
Korail Jeolla Line (KTX terminus). Take a taxi to Jinnamgwan in the old harbour district (journey time not published); by day the double-decker tour bus also runs to Yi Sun-sin Square
Getting home
The show ends at 21:30. KTX trains from Yeosu EXPO to Yongsan take about 3 hours and the last ones of the day leave in the late evening, so a same-night return is tight. Korail's timetable changes on 1 November 2026, so check the last train for your date in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at Yeosu EXPO Station before the day, allow time for the taxi from the old harbour district, and check the last express bus to Seoul Central City at Yeosu Bus Terminal. Staying the night in Yeosu is easier.
Parking
KTO's Jinnamgwan listing says the site has parking; no parking arrangements for the show were published.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

| 2027 | Not announced as of 19 October 2026. The Korea Heritage Service chooses the host sites of its heritage media-art programme each year; six of the eight 2025 sites (Jinju, Gunsan, Gyeongju, Cheorwon, Tongyeong and Yangsan) returned in 2026, but no 2027 list has been published, so whether Yeosu hosts again is unknown. | tba | |
| 2026 | 9 Oct – 8 Nov 2026 | confirmed | Three linked spots in Yeosu's old harbour district: the Jinnamgwan hall and its relics exhibition hall (KTO address 11 Dongmun-ro, Gunja-dong), the Gosodae memorial site and Yi Sun-sin Square with its turtle-ship replica. |
Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
A small island covered with about 3,000 camellia trees and walking trails, joined to the mainland by a 768 m breakwater and part of Hallyeohaesang National Park; the camellia buds start to open in October. The island is open at all times and free, so a late-afternoon walk fits before the 19:30 start in the old harbour. Walk the breakwater (about 15 minutes) or ride the Dongbaek train (adult ₩1,000 one way); the lighthouse is closed on Mondays.
Getting there: Taxi from Yeosu EXPO Station or the old harbour, then the breakwater on foot (about 15 min) or the Dongbaek train (₩1,000)
A hillside village of mural alleys above the old harbour, started by residents in 2009 and now about 1,650 m in ten sections, with murals of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the turtle ship, the Opodae lookout over the harbour, and Gosodae, one of the show's three spots. The lanes are open at all times and free: walk them before dusk, then come down to Yi Sun-sin Square or Jinnamgwan for the 19:30 start. The Moonlight Gallery on the way is free (10:00–18:00, closed Mondays).
Getting there: On foot: entrances at Jinnamgwan (over Jwasuyeong Bridge), Yi Sun-sin Square and Jongpo; free
A three-storey seafood market by the harbour: buy fish on the ground floor and have it prepared at the restaurants upstairs. Eat there before the show: the city lists it open 05:00–21:00 and closed on the first and third Tuesdays (page last updated 2021), and the show is closed on Tuesdays anyway. Leave time to walk back to Yi Sun-sin Square or Jinnamgwan for the 19:30 start.
Getting there: About 1 km from Jinnamgwan: on foot along the harbour or a short taxi ride
- Getting awayAfter
The show ends at 21:30 and the last KTX trains to Yongsan leave Yeosu EXPO in the late evening. For a same-night return, take a taxi from the old harbour to the station (journey time not published), leave the show early if you need to, and check the last train for your date in the Korail+ app (코레일+) beforehand. Staying the night in Yeosu is easier.
Questions travelers ask
When is the Jinnamgwan media art show in 2026?
Every evening from 9 October to 8 November 2026, 19:30–21:30, except Tuesdays. KTO's data also lists special closure days for the Yeosu–Suncheon 10·19 memorial period without giving the dates, so check before going in the days around 19 October.
Is it free, and do I need to book?
It is free and no booking is listed, including the AI Yi Sun-sin and the stamp tour. Flea-market goods cost extra. Enquiries go to the National Heritage Promotion Agency on 070-8064-0807.
What is there to see?
Three light pieces: projection on the Jinnamgwan hall, a piece on the stele pavilion and protected tree at Gosodae, and a media façade of the turtle-ship replica on Yi Sun-sin Square, all telling the story of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and his navy. There is also an AI 'metahuman' Yi Sun-sin to talk to, a three-stop stamp tour and, at weekends, hands-on programmes and a flea market.
How do I get there from Seoul?
KTX from Yongsan to Yeosu EXPO Station takes about 2 h 50 m–3 h 10 m (₩45,400 standard), then take a taxi to the old harbour district. Express buses from Seoul Central City Terminal to Yeosu Bus Terminal take about 4 h 10 m (₩39,600 deluxe), and city bus 111 runs from the terminal past Jinnamgwan.
Can I get back to Seoul the same night?
Only just, if at all. KTX trains to Yongsan take about 3 hours and the last ones of the day leave Yeosu EXPO in the late evening, so you may have to leave the show early and take a taxi to the station. Korail's timetable changes on 1 November 2026, so check the last train for your date in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station before the day. Staying the night in Yeosu is easier.
Will it be held in Yeosu again in 2027?
Nothing has been announced. The Korea Heritage Service chooses host sites for its media-art programme each year; Yeosu was not among the eight sites in 2025 and is one of 12 in 2026.
Is this the same as the Yeosu Heritage Night?
No. The Yeosu National Heritage Night (여수 국가유산 야행) is a separate two-evening festival run by Yeosu City around Jinnamgwan; in 2025 it was held on 25–26 July. The media art is a month-long light show from the Korea Heritage Service.

What we could not confirm
- Dates of the special closure for the Yeosu–Suncheon 10·19 memorial period: KTO's data names it without dates, and Yeosu City's notice (linked from the culture ministry listing) was not opened. The 78th memorial ceremony was set for 19 October 2026.
- Whether Yeosu hosted the programme before 2026: it was not among the eight 2025 sites, but the 2021–2024 site lists were not checked; firstHeld 2026 also rests on Jinnamgwan being under repair from December 2015 until 2025.
- Times, fees and booking for the weekend hands-on programmes, the flea market and the 전라좌수영 VR experience (the VR is named only in the August 2026 national announcement, not in the KTO listing).
- 2027: no host-site list or dates for the national programme, and no sign yet whether Yeosu will be chosen again.

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-21 — Tense: the description no longer describes the running 2026 national programme as over. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the 18–24 October last-train and last-bus times (also from the description and who-it-suits text) and the bus and tour-bus departure times, which were not verified for the new Korail timetable of 1 November; the page now gives journey times and says to check the last train in the Korail app. · 2026-10-27 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: no train, bus or shuttle clock times were quoted, so none to change; added a note on leaving the old harbour for the last KTX from Yeosu EXPO; prices: no change (free entry); the Yeosu World Island Expo evening-pass price went with that dropped item.
