What it is like
Mungyeong, a mountain city in the northwest of Gyeongsangbuk-do, sells its beef under the Yakdol Hanu brand. The cattle are castrated Korean hanu fed for about 270 days, from about six months of age, on feed mixed with powdered yakdol, a pegmatite stone found only in Suye-ri, Gaeun-eup. About 270 designated farms raise some 12,000 head, and the meat is sold through the Mungyeong Livestock Cooperative. Each autumn the city, the cooperative and a festival committee turn the brand into a three-day festival at Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park, at the foot of the old mountain pass that is the city's best-known sight (about 4.05 million visitors in 2025).
The idea is simple: buy beef cheaply and cook it on the spot. The cooperative runs butcher counters and a very large grill area. In 2023–2025 cuts such as galbi, sirloin and chuck flap were sold 20–33% below market price, and the grill area seated 1,000 people at once in 2023, 900 in 2024 and 800 in 2025. Around it are free tastings of Yakdol beef and Yakdol pork, local produce booths (32 in 2025), trot-music concerts at the opening, on Saturday and at the closing, a 'Hanwoo arcade' of carnival games, an arm-wrestling challenge, a singing contest between Mungyeong's towns and villages, and a prize draw for beef buyers on the last day. In 2025, visitors who came by KTX received raffle tickets and a coupon for local products.
The 2026 edition, the 15th, was planned as a full festival for 9–11 October. After foot-and-mouth disease broke out in neighbouring Yecheon, the city cut it back to the 'Mungyeong Yakdol Hanwoo Cooperative Market': the discounted sales and the grill area went ahead at Saejae, with disinfection mats at the entrance and biosecurity staff, while most festival events were minimised. About 2,000 people came on the first day. No 2027 dates had been announced as of 18 October 2026.
The honest caveats: this is a beef market with entertainment, aimed at domestic visitors, and the stage shows and contests are in Korean. Entry is free but the beef is not, and per-cut prices were not published. Getting there takes planning: only four KTX-Eum trains a day run from Pangyo to Mungyeong Station, which is not within walking distance of Saejae, and bus tickets marked 'Jeomchon' go to the city centre, more than 20 km away. The reward is the setting: the festival falls in the autumn-colour season at one of Korea's most popular walking passes, close in time to the Mungyeong Apple Festival in the same park.
Highlights
- Buy Yakdol Hanu cuts at a discount (20–33% below market price in 2023–2025) and grill them yourself in a grill area that seated 800 people at once in 2025
- Beef from cattle fed for about 270 days on feed mixed with powdered yakdol, a pegmatite stone found only in Suye-ri, Gaeun-eup
- Free tastings of Yakdol beef and Yakdol pork, plus local produce booths (32 in 2025)
- Trot concerts at the opening ceremony, on Saturday and at the closing, with a prize draw for beef buyers on the final day
- 'Hanwoo arcade' games, a 1-vs-100 arm-wrestling challenge and a singing contest between Mungyeong's towns and villages (2025)
- Set at the entrance to Mungyeong Saejae, a historic mountain pass with three stone gates first built between 1594 and the early 18th century
Who it suits. Best for meat lovers, families and groups who want a cheap, hands-on hanu barbecue in an autumn mountain setting, especially if combined with a walk on the Saejae pass; less suited to vegetarians, to travelers who need English-language programmes, or to anyone without the time for a two-hour trip each way from Seoul.
Getting there
From Seoul
Bus: intercity buses from Dong Seoul Terminal to the Mungyeong bus stop (문경공용버스정류장) in Mungyeong-eup, the town at the foot of Saejae, about 11 a day: about 2 h 20 m (₩14,200) or 1 h 54 m on deluxe buses (₩19,800). From there take a taxi or a free city bus to the park. Train: KTX-Eum from Pangyo (about 14 minutes from Gangnam on the Shinbundang Line) to Mungyeong Station, about four trains a day, 1 h 34 m, ₩17,400; then the free Express 1 city bus or a taxi to Saejae. Do not buy a bus ticket to Jeomchon: that is the city centre, more than 20 km from Saejae.
From Busan
Buses link Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo, subway Line 1 Nopo Station) and Jeomchon Terminal in 2 h 47 m (₩27,900 deluxe); about 6 buses a day run from Jeomchon to Busan, so check the departure times in both directions at the terminal before the festival day. Busan Central lists no bus to the Mungyeong-eup stop, and Jeomchon is the city centre, more than 20 km from Saejae, so finish by taxi or free city bus (route 21 takes about 45 minutes from Jeomchon, per a travel blog). Or take KTX to Dong-Daegu and a bus from Dong-Daegu Terminal to Jeomchon (1 h 48 m–1 h 55 m, ₩16,700 deluxe).
Last leg from Mungyeong Station (KTX-Eum)
Jungbu Naeryuk Line (KTX-Eum from Pangyo). Not walkable; take the free Express 1 city bus (route per a travel blog) or a taxi to Mungyeong Saejae
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was documented. Mungyeong's city buses have been free for everyone, tourists included, since 1 January 2025, and the city says it is adding buses timed to KTX trains at Mungyeong Station and a tourist loop linking the station with Saejae; a travel blog names the Express 1 route (… Maseong → Mungyeong Station → Mungyeong Saejae). In 2025, festival-goers who came by KTX received a raffle ticket, a local-products coupon and a souvenir.
Getting home
The festival closed at 17:00 in 2025. Only about four KTX-Eum trains a day link Mungyeong Station with Pangyo, and train and bus times change (Korail's timetable changed on 1 November 2026): check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) and the last bus from the Mungyeong bus stop to Dong Seoul at the terminal before the festival day. Allow time for the bus or taxi from Saejae to the station or bus stop.
Parking
Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park has car parks for about 2,500 vehicles (Maeil Shinmun, 2022); the 2023 festival was held on the No. 1 car park itself. Parking fees were not verified.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask
When is the Mungyeong Yakdol Hanu Festival 2027?
Not announced as of 18 October 2026. Recent editions ran 7–9 October 2023, 4–6 October 2024, 31 October–2 November 2025 and 9–11 October 2026, so expect a three-day weekend between early October and early November 2027.
Did the festival take place in 2026?
In reduced form. After foot-and-mouth disease broke out in neighbouring Yecheon, the 15th edition (9–11 October 2026) became the Mungyeong Yakdol Hanwoo Cooperative Market: discounted beef sales and the grill area went ahead at Mungyeong Saejae under biosecurity controls, with most festival events cut.
Is the festival free?
Entry is free (10:00–17:00 in 2025). You pay for the beef: in 2023–2025 cuts were sold 20–33% below market price, and you grill them yourself in the festival grill area.
What is Yakdol Hanu?
Mungyeong's beef brand: castrated Korean cattle fed for about 270 days, from about six months of age, on feed mixed with powdered yakdol, a pegmatite stone found only in Suye-ri, Gaeun-eup. About 270 designated farms raise some 12,000 head.
How do I get there from Seoul?
Take a bus from Dong Seoul Terminal to the Mungyeong bus stop in Mungyeong-eup, about 2 h 20 m (₩14,200) or 1 h 54 m by deluxe bus (₩19,800), then a taxi or free city bus to Saejae. Or take the KTX-Eum from Pangyo to Mungyeong Station (1 h 34 m, ₩17,400, four trains a day). Do not buy a ticket to Jeomchon, which is more than 20 km away.
What else can I do at Mungyeong Saejae?
Walk the old pass through its three stone gates (about four hours there and back), visit the Mungyeongsaejae Open Set drama village, or go to the Mungyeong Apple Festival in the same park (17 October–1 November 2026, 09:00–18:00, free).
