What it is like
Moseulpo Port is a national fishing port in Hamo-ri, Daejeong-eup, at the southwest corner of Jeju, about 1.2 km from the pier for the Gapado ferry. Its boats work the fishing grounds around Marado, Korea's southernmost island, where bangeo (Japanese amberjack, usually called yellowtail in English) feed on damselfish and mackerel. The festival committee has promoted the catch with this festival since 2001, and says the fish puts on fat from November to February.
The festival now runs Thursday to Sunday in the second half of November (it opened on 23 November in 2023, ran 28 November–1 December in 2024 and 20–23 November in 2025). In 2025 the Thursday began with a 15:00 procession through the port and a 17:00 opening ceremony; Friday had folk games for older residents and the heats of a bangeo song contest; Saturday was the main day, with an 11:00 show in which a large bangeo (daebangeo) is cut up in front of the crowd, a 12:00 eating contest, a scramble for horned turban shells, tewak float-making with haenyeo (Jeju's women divers) and a haenyeo singing contest; Sunday brought the song-contest final and a closing ceremony with fireworks at 20:00. Running throughout were bare-hand catching in a seawater pool and fishing for bangeo in a floating sea cage (both paid), a mock fish auction that is free to join (you pay only your winning bid), free tastings and free bare-hand catching for children, all signed up for on the spot.
Honest caveats: this is a fishing-community festival run in Korean, and bangeo is not cheap. A Jeju MBC report in December 2024 put a plate of sashimi at the festival at ₩40,000, criticised as poor value, after November catches at the Moseulpo fisheries co-op fell 33% on a year earlier. The 2026 edition runs 19–22 November 2026, dates confirmed on the organizer's site, but its programme, hours and fees are not yet confirmed: travel blogs reported in mid-October that the site's programme page still showed 2025, and the programme times on this page are provisional. Moseulpo is about 1 hour 15 minutes from the airport by express bus, so most visitors stay in the southwest or pair the trip with Songaksan, Gapado or Marado. The festival overlaps with the Jeju Citrus Expo (19–23 November 2026) at the opposite end of Seogwipo.
Highlights
- Bare-hand bangeo catching in a seawater pool (paid, roughly ₩20,000), with free sessions for children, all registered on site
- Saturday show at 11:00 in which a large bangeo (daebangeo) is cut up in front of the crowd, followed by a 12:00 eating contest (2025 programme)
- Fishing for bangeo in a floating sea cage (paid, roughly ₩20,000) and a mock fish auction that is free to join; you pay only your winning bid
- Free bangeo tastings, Friday to Sunday 11:00–16:00 in 2025
- Haenyeo (women divers) singing contest, tewak float-making and a scramble for horned turban shells
- Opening procession at 15:00 and ceremony at 17:00 on the Thursday; closing ceremony with fireworks on the Sunday evening
Who it suits. Best for seafood lovers and families already on Jeju in late November who want hands-on fishing fun and fresh bangeo, ideally combined with Songaksan, Gapado or Marado in the island's southwest; less suited to visitors who need English programming or cheap sashimi, or who are based in Jeju City without a car and do not want a 75-minute bus ride each way.
Getting there
From Seoul
Fly from Gimpo to Jeju International Airport (scheduled 1 h 15 min on most flights, dozens a day). Jeju has no trains. From the airport's 1st-floor bus stop 4 (in front of gate 4, signed for Daejeong and Hwasun), take express bus 151 towards Moseulpo, get off at Hamo Sports Park (하모체육공원) and walk about 300 m to the port: about 1 h 15 min in all, ₩2,000–3,000 by card. By car or taxi it is about 40 km via Pyeonghwa-ro, roughly 1 h 10 min.
From Busan
Fly from Gimhae (Busan) to Jeju International Airport, then express bus 151 or a taxi as above.
From Incheon Airport
Most travellers transfer to Gimpo Airport on the AREX airport railroad for the frequent Gimpo–Jeju flights, then continue from Jeju International Airport by express bus 151 as above.
Festival shuttle
A festival shuttle or park-and-ride for 19–22 November 2026 is not yet confirmed. Route 152, still listed on the festival site, stopped running in August 2024; use 151.
Getting home
Jeju has no trains. The 2026 daily hours are not yet published, and the Sunday closing ceremony and fireworks run into the evening; bus 151 back to the airport and Jeju City takes about 1 h 15 min. Last-bus times for 19–22 November 2026 were not checked: check the last bus 151 at the stop or at the terminal before you go. Staying the night in the southwest or in Seogwipo, or booking a taxi, is safer than a same-day flight home.
Parking
A travel blog summarising the official site suggests setting navigation to 모슬포항 주차장 (Moseulpo Port car park), via Nohyeong-ro, Pyeonghwa-ro and Iljuseo-ro from the airport. Festival parking arrangements for 19–22 November 2026 are not yet confirmed.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
The largest five-day market in western Jeju, begun during the Korean War and now in Hamo-ri, with dried and fresh seafood, produce, household goods and many food stalls. It sets up only on days ending in 1 and 6, so during the festival only on Saturday 21 November, 08:00–14:00: browse from about 08:00 and walk back for the 11:00 bangeo-cutting show (provisional time). KTO data says cards are not accepted, so bring cash.
Getting there: On foot: about 450 m north of the port in a straight line (Sinyeong-ro 36beon-gil 65, Hamo-ri); free
A low, flat island off Moseulpo (its highest point is about 20 m) ringed by a 4.2 km coastal path past basalt stone walls, with views back to Sanbangsan and Hallasan; most visitors walk or cycle it in one to two hours. Tickets are sold at Unjin Port with photo ID, the desk closes 20 minutes before sailing and your return sailing is set when you buy, so allow about three hours in all and go on a morning when nothing you want is on the programme. Sailings depend on the sea.
Getting there: Walk to the Unjin Port ferry terminal (about 1.2 km, about 12 min), then the ferry, about 10 min; about ₩15,000 return
A wartime airfield on the Sangmo-ri plain, built by the Japanese military with forcibly mobilised local labour and used for kamikaze training; 19 aircraft hangars still stand in the fields, one holding a life-size replica Zero fighter. It is free and open at all times, but has no toilets (the nearest are at Seotalorum, about 600 m away): go in daylight, on the way back from the Gapado ferry or before the afternoon programme.
Getting there: Taxi, or on foot via Unjin Port: about 1.2 km to the ferry terminal, then about 1.1 km further (KTO distances)
Questions travelers ask
When is the Moseulpo yellowtail festival in 2026?
19–22 November 2026 (Thursday to Sunday) at Moseulpo Port, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo. The dates are confirmed on the organizer's site (bangeofestival.com), which announced the 26th festival on 3 September 2026. Daily hours and the 2026 programme are not yet confirmed; in 2025 the festival ran 11:00–19:00, with the opening ceremony at 17:00 on the Thursday.
Is the festival free?
Entry is usually free. Bare-hand catching and sea-cage fishing are paid, roughly ₩20,000 each; the mock auction has been free to join (you pay your winning bid), and children's bare-hand catching and the Friday–Sunday tastings free. The organizer had not published 2026 fees by 29 October 2026.
What is bangeo?
Japanese amberjack, usually sold in English as yellowtail. Off Moseulpo it feeds on damselfish and mackerel on the fishing grounds around Marado, and the festival committee says it is fattest from November to February. Large fish (daebangeo) are the prized ones for sashimi.
How do I get to Moseulpo Port from Jeju Airport?
Take express bus 151 from airport stop 4 to Hamo Sports Park, then walk about 300 m: about 1 h 15 min, ₩2,000–3,000 by card. Route 152, still mentioned on the festival site, stopped running in August 2024. By car it is about 40 km, roughly 1 h 10 min.
Can I catch a bangeo with my bare hands?
Yes. Bare-hand catching in a seawater pool is a paid activity (roughly ₩20,000), registered on site; in 2025 it ran daily 11:00–17:00, and children had free sessions Friday–Sunday 12:00–15:00, first come first served. KTO says you can take your catch home.
What else is near Moseulpo Port?
Daejeong Five-Day Market, about 450 m north of the port, sets up 08:00–14:00 on days ending in 1 and 6 (Saturday 21 November during the festival). The Unjin Port terminal for the Gapado ferry is about 1.2 km away, and Alddreu Airfield, with 19 wartime Japanese aircraft hangars, about 1.1 km beyond it. Songaksan's summit is closed for a nature rest period until 31 July 2027.
