The 27th edition ran 29 April–8 May 2026 with 236 films from 54 countries; 2027 dates had not been announced as of 19 October 2026, but recent editions have run from the last days of April into early May. Screenings are paid, roughly ₩10,000–20,000 a ticket (general screenings at the low end, the ceremonies and late-night shows at the top), sold online on the official site from about two weeks before opening, while the outdoor alley screenings at 20:00 each night are free. No source confirms whether foreign-issued cards work on the ticket site; the on-site box offices sell unsold seats for card or cash.

What it is like

The Jeonju International Film Festival, JEONJU IFF or JIFF for short, was first held in 2000 and is known as Korea's festival of independent, low-budget and experimental cinema. Its hub is Jeonju Film Street (영화의거리) in Gosa-dong, near Gaeksa in the old city centre, where CGV Jeonju Gosa and Megabox Jeonju Gaeksa sit alongside the festival's year-round home, the Jeonju Film Production Center, with its 98-seat Jeonju Digital Independent Cinema. For ten days each spring the street fills with box offices, photo zones, pop-ups and the official goods shop, while the opening and closing ceremonies move to two large halls in the north of the city.

The 27th edition ran 29 April to 8 May 2026 under the slogan 'Beyond the Frame' (우리는 늘 선을 넘지): 236 films from 54 countries, 77 of them world premieres, in 610 screenings at five theatres with 21 screens. The opening ceremony was held in the Moak Hall of the Sori Arts Center and the closing ceremony at Jeonbuk National University's Samsung Culture Center. Seat occupancy reached 82.1%, and 278 of the 324 screenings in the first five days sold out.

You do not need an industry badge to take part. Screenings are paid, roughly ₩10,000–20,000 a ticket: general screenings at the low end, event screenings, talks and masterclasses in between, and the ceremonies and late-night shows at the top. Tickets are sold online on the official site, two per person per screening. The free part of the festival is the alley screenings (골목상영): outdoor shows at 20:00 every night in car parks, church squares and by Pungnammun Gate on the edge of Hanok Village, first come, first served, which drew 4,175 people over eight nights in 2026. Older guides mention the Jeonju Dome, a temporary outdoor screening venue that badge holders could still use in 2022; it does not appear in the 2024–2026 guides and reports we reviewed.

The honest caveats: popular screenings sell out online on sale day, and the Labour Day and Children's Day holidays bring heavy crowds, traffic and parking shortages to Film Street. The festival publishes an English website and English guide, and in 2025 every film without a ★ mark had English subtitles and every Q&A had English interpretation, but no source we found says whether the ticket site accepts foreign-issued cards. During the festival the on-site box offices sell unsold seats for card or cash, which is the fallback.

Highlights

  • 236 films from 54 countries in 2026, 77 of them world premieres, in 610 screenings at five theatres and 21 screens
  • Free alley screenings (골목상영) at 20:00 every night from 30 April to 7 May 2026, in car parks, church squares and by Pungnammun Gate; 4,175 people came over eight nights
  • Jeonju Film Street in Gosa-dong as the festival hub, with box offices, photo zones, pop-ups, the goods shop and the 100 Films 100 Posters exhibition (about 8,000 visitors in 2026)
  • Masterclasses (Tsai Ming-liang and Mike Figgis in 2026, both sold out), with English interpretation at every Q&A in the 2025 guide
  • Retrospectives and rarities: New York Underground – The Mavericks, a seven-film tribute to actor Ahn Sung-ki and Béla Tarr's 439-minute Sátántangó in 2026
  • Opening ceremony in the Sori Arts Center's Moak Hall and closing ceremony at Jeonbuk National University's Samsung Culture Center, both ticketed

Who it suits. Best for film lovers who can book online on the April sale day and stay a night or two in Jeonju, ideally combined with Hanok Village; casual visitors can still catch a free alley screening or buy unsold seats at the box offices. Less suited to anyone who needs fully English booking help or dislikes crowds, since most screenings sell out over the early-May holidays.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Yongsan Station to Jeonju Station (about 1 h 40 m, fastest 1 h 26 m; ₩31,600 standard class on the fare table in force since 1 September 2026), then a taxi (meter starts at ₩2,800) to Jeonju Film Street in Gosa-dong, in the old city centre near Gaeksa. Express buses from Seoul take about 2 h 30 m to the Jeonju bus terminals. The opening ceremony at the Sori Arts Center and the closing ceremony at Jeonbuk National University are in Deokjin-gu in the north of the city; take a taxi between venues.

From Busan

Express bus from Busan to Jeonju, about 3 h 20 m, roughly hourly, then a taxi to Film Street.

From Incheon Airport

Airport limousine bus to Jeonju, about 3 h 30 m, roughly every 30 minutes, stopping near Jeonju City Hall; then a taxi or city bus to Film Street.

Last leg from Jeonju Station

KTX / Jeolla Line. Not walkable; take a taxi (meter starts at ₩2,800) or a city bus to the Gaeksa and Film Street area

Festival shuttle

The festival said it improved its shuttle buses for 2026; routes and times were not published in the sources reviewed.

Getting home

KTX trains from Jeonju to Yongsan take about 1 h 40 m (fastest 1 h 26 m). Train times for the 2027 festival dates are not out yet, so this page gives no last-train time: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at Jeonju Station before you go, especially if you plan to stay for a 20:00 alley screening or an evening film, and allow for the taxi ride from Film Street to the station.

Parking

The Jeonju Film Production Center lists free parking for its cinema visitors (KTO), but during the 2026 festival parking around Film Street ran short, traffic was congested and some drivers missed their screenings; come by taxi or bus.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Booking
Online on the official festival website (mobile booking supported). In 2026 general screenings went on sale on 17 April at 11:00, after the ceremony tickets; two tickets per person per screening, online sales close 10 minutes before each film, and entry is by mobile ticket (screenshots are not accepted). Online payment is by credit card, debit card or simple-pay service, not bank transfer or phone billing. During the festival the box offices sold only unsold seats, for card or cash: on 29 April at the Sori Arts Center (16:00–20:30), then from 30 April at J Lounge, CGV Jeonju Gosa, Megabox Jeonju Gaeksa and the Jeonju Digital Independent Cinema from 09:30. Cancel up to 60 minutes before; once the festival opened, a small per-ticket cancellation fee applied.
Foreign cards
Not confirmed either way. The festival's 2024–2026 ticket rules list credit cards, debit cards and simple-pay services for online payment, and its English guide (2025) gives no rule on foreign-issued cards, so we could not confirm that a foreign card works on the ticket site. The on-site box offices take cards and cash for unsold seats during the festival (2024 guide; 2026 report), which is the fallback.
English on site
The festival publishes an English website (eng.jeonjufest.kr) and an English festival guide (2024 and 2025 editions). In the 2025 guide every film without a ★ mark had English subtitles, and English interpretation was provided at all Q&A sessions; check each film's marking before you book.
Crowds
Busy, especially over the 1 May and 5 May holidays: 69,365 attendances to 7 May 2026 at 82.1% seat occupancy, and 278 of 324 screenings in the first five days sold out. Film Street saw traffic jams and parking shortages, and queues of about 100 people formed before the goods shop opened (120 on 2 May).
Best time to go
Be online at 11:00 on the general sale day (17 April in 2026) for popular films and masterclasses. During the festival, check the box offices for unsold seats, and arrive early for the 20:00 alley screenings, which are first come, first served. The holiday days draw the biggest crowds.
What to bring
Your phone with the mobile ticket (screenshots are not accepted), a card or cash for the box office (the Jeonju Love voucher is not accepted), ID for any discount, and a warm layer for the evening alley screenings.
Step-free access
Wheelchair users get 50% off, with the same for one companion, by separate advance booking or on site. Barrier-free screenings and guidance were expanded in 2026, and the 2025 programme included audio-described and barrier-free versions. The Jeonju Digital Independent Cinema is on the 4th floor of the Jeonju Film Production Center.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Gyeonggijeon Shrine (경기전)Before

The walled shrine that holds the portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty, with the Royal Portrait Museum in its grounds and Jeondong Cathedral just across Taejo-ro. From March to May it is open 09:00–19:00 with last entry at 18:00 (adult ₩3,000, museum included), so go in the morning or between afternoon screenings and be back on Film Street for the evening shows. Hanbok wearers get 50% off on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Getting there: On foot from Film Street, about 20 min east past Pungnammun Gate into the Hanok Village; or a short taxi ride

  • Jeonju Hanok Village Traditional Performing Arts Parade (전주한옥마을 전통연희 퍼레이드)Before

A free one-hour street parade through Jeonju Hanok Village, with pungmul drummers, dragon banners and comic folk plays that pull spectators in, from Namcheongyo Bridge along Taejo-ro to Gyeonggijeon. It runs on Saturdays at 15:00 (18 April–31 October in 2026; the 2027 season is not yet published), so on a festival Saturday it fits between an early screening and the evening programme. Anyone can join the march at the start. See our Jeonju Hanok Village Traditional Performing Arts Parade page.

Getting there: On foot from Film Street to the Hanok Village, about 15–20 min, or a short taxi ride; free

  • Nambu Market night market (전주 남부시장 야시장)Before or after

Jeonju's main traditional market beside Pungnammun Gate, whose alleys fill with food stalls on Friday and Saturday evenings: grilled skewers, pancakes, fried snacks and desserts. Eat there before a 20:00 alley screening (Pungnammun was a 2026 site) or after an evening film. Visit Jeonju lists 17:00–23:00 but a March 2026 report gave 19:00–24:00, so some stalls may still be setting up early on. Returning to Seoul that night, check the last train first and allow for the taxi to Jeonju Station.

Getting there: On foot from Film Street, about 15–20 min to the market by Pungnammun Gate; free to walk in

Questions travelers ask

When is the Jeonju International Film Festival 2027?

Not announced as of 19 October 2026. Recent editions ran 1–10 May 2024, 30 April–9 May 2025 and 29 April–8 May 2026, so expect ten days from late April into early May 2027. The 2026 dates were fixed by the organizing committee's board in late October 2025.

Can foreign visitors book JIFF tickets online with a foreign card?

No source we found confirms it either way. Tickets are sold online on the official site and paid by credit card, debit card or a simple-pay service, and the festival publishes an English site and guide, but neither the 2025 English guide nor the 2026 reports say whether foreign-issued cards are accepted. During the festival the on-site box offices sell unsold seats for card or cash, so that is the fallback.

How much are Jeonju International Film Festival tickets?

Usually roughly ₩10,000–20,000 a ticket: general screenings at the low end, event screenings, Jeonju Talk Talk and masterclasses in between, and the opening or closing ceremony, late-night screenings and very long films at the top. Alley screenings are free. Visitors 65+ and people with disabilities get a small discount on site, and wheelchair users 50% off.

When do tickets go on sale, and how many can I buy?

About two weeks before opening, online at 11:00: on 17 April in 2026, and on 19 April in 2024, when ceremony tickets opened two days earlier at 14:00. The limit is two tickets per person per screening, online sales close 10 minutes before each film, and entry is by mobile ticket (no screenshots).

Are there free screenings?

Yes. The alley screenings (골목상영) are free outdoor shows at 20:00 every night, 30 April to 7 May in 2026, at sites around Film Street and Hanok Village such as Chipyeong car park, Pungnammun Gate and the Jeonju Central Church square. There is no booking; places are first come, first served.

Do the films have English subtitles?

Most do. In the 2025 English guide, international films carried Korean subtitles and every film without a ★ mark also had English subtitles; English interpretation was provided at all Q&A sessions. Check the ★ marking in the timetable before booking.

How do I get to Jeonju Film Street from Seoul?

Take the KTX from Yongsan to Jeonju Station (about 1 h 40 m, ₩31,600), then a taxi to Film Street in Gosa-dong. Express buses take about 2 h 30 m. Check the last train back to Yongsan in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the station before you go.

What is the weather like during Jeonju International Film Festival?

April in Jeonju: average high 20 °C (67 °F), low 7 °C (44 °F), 78 mm of rain (Jeonju station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). May in Jeonju: average high 25 °C (77 °F), low 13 °C (55 °F), 83 mm of rain (Jeonju station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). Mild days, cold evenings: a jacket for after dark.
