What it is like

Jeonju, capital of Jeonbuk, is the city most associated with bibimbap, the rice bowl topped with vegetables, beef and gochujang that is mixed at the table. UNESCO named it a Creative City of Gastronomy, and every October the city stages a festival around the dish. In 2026 it moved from the Jeonju World Cup Stadium to Deokjin Park, a historic lotus pond with a bridge to an island library, so that the waterside and the Yeonhwajeong pavilion area could serve as the stage and the city could spend less on temporary structures. The programme has about twenty parts. The centrepiece is the large bibimbap performance, in which residents and visitors mix one enormous bowl together. Around it are food streets: Jeonju Bibimbap Street, a Paldo street with regional versions from across Korea, and a World Bibim Street of mixed-rice dishes from other countries, plus a traveller's restaurant with live music, a lounge pairing traditional liquor with bibimbap, chef cooking shows, a children's bibim class, a parade, a gukak-and-DJ dance party, a flea market and a character pop-up store. The honest caveats: entry is free but the food is paid, so budget for it; the weekend overlapped with Hanok Village night events, which strains hotels; and the park, while pleasant, is a 2026 experiment whose return in 2027 is not confirmed.

Highlights

  • Large bibimbap performance (대형 비빔 퍼포먼스): residents and visitors mix one giant bowl together, the headline event of the 2026 programme
  • Paldo Bibim Street with regional bibimbap from across Korea, next to Jeonju Bibimbap Street and a World Bibim Street
  • Bibimbap Traveler's Restaurant with live performances and a Traveler's Lounge pairing traditional liquor with bibimbap
  • Chef-led bibim cooking show, children's bibim experience and taste class
  • Bibimbap parade and a gukak-plus-DJ dance party on the lotus pond side
  • Stamp tour, Bibim Friends photo zone and pop-up store, small-business flea market

Who it suits. Best for food-focused travellers and families who are already visiting Jeonju Hanok Village; less suited to anyone expecting a ticketed, timetabled event, because the 2026 programme was published without a timetable and the venue has just changed.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
