What it is like
Makgeolli, the milky, lightly fizzy rice wine, has a particular place in Jeonju. In the Samcheon-dong Makgeolli Alley and the city's other old drinking houses, ordering one kettle brings a table of side dishes, often about twenty of them. The city built a festival around that culture in 2024, first as a two-night event inside Jeonju Festa at Jeonju Stadium, then from 2025 as a stand-alone weekend on the main sports ground of Jeonju Vision University in Hyoja-dong, which drew about 20,000 people over two nights.
The 2026 edition, the third, runs on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October under the slogan 'Get tipsy on Jeonju makgeolli under the autumn moon'. Five Jeonju makgeolli producers and 15 local restaurants take part, among them well-known houses from the Samcheon-dong alley, serving anju, the food Koreans eat with drink. You taste and buy makgeolli made in Jeonju and eat from the booths, while the stage runs Gijeop-nori (a traditional folk performance), invited acts, busking and a retro DJ party. Visitors can join a citizens' karaoke, a makgeolli challenge, quizzes and random missions. In 2025 there were also exhibits on lees and nuruk (the fermentation starter), a mojoo-making experience with the Jeonju Traditional Liquor Museum, a fruit-makgeolli cocktail show and bottle-bowling games.
The honest caveats: the festival is young and published in outline only. Drink and food prices were not published, and the campus is in the west of the city, a taxi ride from Jeonju Station and Hanok Village. Entry is free.
Highlights
- Makgeolli brewed in Jeonju to taste and buy, from five Jeonju makgeolli producers (2026)
- Anju (food to eat with drink) from 15 local restaurants, including houses of the Samcheon-dong Makgeolli Alley, in the style of Jeonju's kettle-and-side-dish makgeolli houses
- Evening stage with Gijeop-nori (기접놀이), a traditional folk performance, plus invited acts, busking and a retro DJ party
- Citizens' karaoke, a makgeolli challenge, makgeolli quizzes and random missions for visitors
- Free entry; about 20,000 visitors over two nights in 2025
Who it suits. Best for adults who want to try many Jeonju makgeolli and the city's generous drinking snacks in one place on a free night out, and for anyone already in Jeonju that weekend; less suited to non-drinkers, or to visitors who need English signage or a detailed timetable, since the programme was published in Korean and only in outline.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan Station to Jeonju Station (about 1 h 40 m, fastest 1 h 26 m; ₩31,600 standard class on the fare table in force since 1 September 2026), then a taxi across the city to Jeonju Vision University in Hyoja-dong, in the west of Jeonju next to Jeonju University. Express buses from Seoul take about 2 h 30 m to the Jeonju bus terminals, also a taxi ride from the campus.
From Busan
Express bus from Busan to Jeonju, about 3 h 20 m, roughly hourly, then a taxi to the campus.
From Incheon Airport
Airport limousine bus to Jeonju, about 3 h 30 m, roughly every 30 minutes, stopping near Jeonju City Hall; then a taxi to the campus.
Last leg from Jeonju Station
KTX / Jeolla Line. Not walkable; the campus is on the other side of the city. Take a taxi or a city bus (the festival has not published bus routes).
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was announced for 2026 in the KTO listing or the news reports reviewed.
Getting home
The festival runs until 22:00. The KTX between Jeonju and Yongsan takes about 1 h 40 m, but last-train times for 23–24 October were not confirmed from Korail's timetable for those dates, so check the last train back in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at Jeonju Station before you go, and allow for the taxi from the campus to the station. Staying to the close may mean a night in Jeonju.
Parking
No parking plan was published for 2026; since drinking is the point, come by taxi or bus.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
