What it is like
Hwangmaesan (1,108 m; some sources give 1,113 m) is a mountain in the hills of western Gyeongsangnam-do, on the edge of Hapcheon County. Its broad upper slopes, the Hwangmae Plain at about 800–900 m, began as a large pasture created under a 1984 government livestock policy, and the mountain has been a county park since 1983. Today the open ground is known for royal azaleas in spring and silver grass (eoksae) in autumn: about 60 ha of it, which starts to flower in late September, is usually at its best in mid-October and stays silver into early November.
The autumn festival is recent. The 2026 edition, 17–25 October, is the fifth, which puts the first in 2022. It is a low-key event that frames the landscape rather than competing with it. On the two weekends there are short performances on the lawn plaza from 13:00 to 15:00 (electric violin, fusion gugak and saxophone in 2026). On weekdays small activities run from 13:00 to 18:00: a dice game, a "catch 10 seconds" timing challenge, a four-cut photo booth and silent music listening with headphones. The opening ceremony is at 14:00 on Saturday 17 October, followed by singer Park Hyun-bin. A forest interpreter leads docent tours of the mountain's nature and history (pre-registration on the county site), a local farm-produce market and food stalls run throughout, and on weekdays the electric Nanum Cart tour is free for visitors with disabilities, people aged 70 and over and pregnant women, each with one companion.
The big advantage of Hwangmaesan is how little climbing it takes. A road climbs to a summit car park at about 850 m, and from there the grass is roughly a 10-minute walk on gentle paths. For more, a loop past the azalea steps, an observation deck and Starlight Hill takes about three hours, with views over Hapcheon Lake and towards the Jirisan ridge.
The honest caveats: without a car it is hard to reach. Buses from Seoul run only to Hapcheon town, about four hours away, three times a day, and no bus to the car park was documented, so the last leg is a taxi. The upper car parks fill quickly at weekends, coaches over 25 seats must stop at the lower Deokman lot, and in past years a paid shuttle or a taxi has linked the lower lots. October parking has been reported both as a peak-season charge and as free during the festival. No programmes or information in English were found, pets are not allowed in the park, and the plain is high and exposed, so bring a warm layer.
Highlights
- About 60 ha of silver grass on the Hwangmae Plain at about 900 m, on the 1,108 m Hwangmaesan; the open ground began as a pasture in 1984
- Very little climbing: a road reaches the summit car park at about 850 m, about a 10-minute walk from the grass
- Opening ceremony at 14:00 on Saturday 17 October 2026 on the lawn plaza, followed by singer Park Hyun-bin
- Weekend performances 13:00–15:00 (electric violin, fusion gugak, saxophone) and weekday activities 13:00–18:00, including silent music listening with headphones
- Free weekday Nanum Cart electric tour during the festival for visitors with disabilities, people 70 and over and pregnant women, each with one companion
- Docent tours with a forest interpreter, plus a local farm-produce market and food stalls throughout the festival
Who it suits. Best for drivers, hikers and photographers who want a wide, open silver-grass landscape with very little climbing, and for families on an autumn road trip in the southeast; hard work for travelers without a car, since buses stop in Hapcheon town and the last leg is a taxi.
Getting there
From Seoul
No train reaches Hwangmaesan. Intercity buses run from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Hapcheon in about 4 hours, three times a day (deluxe ₩39,000, premium ₩49,200). No bus to the park's summit car park was documented, so take a taxi from Hapcheon town for the last leg. Rail alternative: KTX-Sancheon from Seoul Station to Jinju (3 h 22 m–3 h 43 m, ₩52,700–53,100 standard class), then an intercity bus to Hapcheon (about 42 minutes, ₩9,400 on the Hapcheon–Jinju route) or a taxi. By car, a road climbs to the summit car park at about 850 m; coaches over 25 seats must stop at the lower Deokman lot.
From Busan
Intercity buses run between Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal and Hapcheon in about 2 h–2 h 14 m (₩15,400 regular, ₩20,000 deluxe on the Hapcheon–Busan timetable), then take a taxi to the park. From Daegu, buses from the Seobu bus stop (서부정류장) take about 46 minutes to Hapcheon (₩8,100).
Festival shuttle
In 2024 and 2025 a shuttle ran on weekends and holidays between the lower Deokman car park and the Ginkgo (Eunhaengnamu) car park for a small fare, and taxis covered the same stretch; whether it runs in 2026, on which days and at what fare, was not published. The Ginkgo lot is about a 10-minute walk from the silver grass. The free weekday Nanum Cart tour is for eligible visitors only; in 2024 it left from the summit car park.
Getting home
There is no train. Only two direct buses a day leave Hapcheon for Seoul Nambu (about 4 h 14 m), the last in the late afternoon; buses to Busan Sasang (about 2 hours), Daegu Seobu (46 minutes) and Jinju (42 minutes) run on into the evening. The timetable valid on the festival dates was not checked with the operator, so check the last bus at Hapcheon terminal before you go. The taxi down from the mountain to Hapcheon town comes first: if you need the Seoul bus, leave the park by mid-afternoon; on weekends the stage programme ends at 15:00.
Parking
Three main car parks on the Hapcheon side: the summit car park (about 850 m), the Ginkgo (Eunhaengnamu) lot and the lower Deokman lot. KTO data lists ₩5,000 for small cars in peak season (₩4,000 off-season) and ₩10,000 for large vehicles; the park's guide, as summarised by a travel site, treats all of October as peak season, with ₩5,000 covering 4 hours and ₩2,000 for each extra hour. A 2025 report said parking was free during that festival; 2026 practice was not confirmed. Buses over 25 seats cannot drive up and must use the Deokman lot. The summit car park fills quickly at weekends.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
- Mojaesan and the Yeongamsa temple site (모산재)After
A rocky 767 m peak off the Hwangmae Plain, with cliff-top views and rock formations such as Dotdae (Mast) and Sungyeol (Chastity) Rock; below it lies the Yeongamsa temple site, with a twin-lion stone lantern and three-storey pagoda. Allow 1–2 hours from the plain to Mojaesan, then a steep descent with rocky stretches and iron stairs: dry weather and daylight only. It suits those returning to Busan, Daegu or Jinju; the last Seoul bus leaves too early. Tip: book your taxi to the Mojaesan car park.
Getting there: On foot from the Hwangmae Plain: about 1–2 hours to Mojaesan, then down to the Mojaesan car park; taxi from there (fare not checked)
- Getting awayAfter
No bus serves the park, so the way home starts with a taxi down to Hapcheon town. Ask the driver who takes you up for a phone number and book the return pickup before you set off across the plain. For Seoul, the last of only two buses a day leaves Hapcheon in the late afternoon, so leave the park by mid-afternoon; buses to Busan, Daegu and Jinju run later.
Questions travelers ask
When is the Hwangmaesan Silver Grass Festival 2026?
17–25 October 2026 (Saturday to the following Sunday) in Hwangmaesan County Park, Hapcheon; KTO lists 09:00–18:00. The opening ceremony is at 14:00 on 17 October on the lawn plaza.
Is the Hwangmaesan Silver Grass Festival free?
Yes, entry is free. Parking, food and, if it runs, the weekend shuttle between the lower car parks cost extra; parking was reported free during the 2025 festival, but 2026 practice was not confirmed.
How do I get to Hwangmaesan without a car?
Take an intercity bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Hapcheon (about 4 hours, three a day) and a taxi up to the park. Only two buses a day go back to Seoul, the last in the late afternoon, so check it at Hapcheon terminal and leave the park by mid-afternoon. From Busan Sasang the bus takes about 2 hours.
How much walking is involved?
Very little if you drive: from the summit car park at about 850 m the grass is about a 10-minute walk. A longer loop past the azalea steps, an observation deck and Starlight Hill takes about 3 hours.
When is the silver grass at its best?
It starts flowering in late September, usually peaks in mid-October and stays silver into early November, so a visit in the week or two after the festival also works; the park is open at all times.
Is there help for visitors with limited mobility?
Yes. On weekdays during the festival the Nanum Cart electric tour is free for people with disabilities, people aged 70 and over and pregnant women, each with one companion, first come first served on site. It does not run on weekends.
