What it is like

The Hangang Festival (한강페스티벌) is the Seoul Metropolitan Government's festival in its Han River parks. It began in 2013 as Hangang Mongttang (한강몽땅), a 37-day summer festival with 28 programmes, and the festival website still carries that name in its header. The city now holds it in four seasonal runs; this page covers the summer run, which fills two to four weeks of late July and August with water play, music, films and boat trips and is pitched as a cheap way to escape the heat without leaving Seoul.

The 2026 summer run, themed 'the closest and surest place to beat the heat', ran from 1 to 16 August on the river and in nine parks, centred on Mangwon, Jamsil, Yanghwa and Nanji. On the first weekend there was a free jazz and K-pop picnic concert on the lawn at Yanghwa Hangang Park, a music party at the Nanji water playground, and the Hangang Night Walk 42K, which set off from Yeouido Hangang Park at 16:00 on 1 August and carried on through the night. Silent DJ parties with wireless headsets took place under Mapo Bridge on three Saturdays, free films were shown under three bridges, and the Jamsil pool hosted jultagi, Korean tightrope walking, on 8–9 August. On Liberation Day, 15 August, teams raced home-made boats at Jamsil, and Seoul Battleship Park in Mangwon held an all-night programme of drama screenings and a peach market until 05:00. Throughout the run, yacht, kayak, small-boat and cruise operators cut their prices by 10–50%.

Most land programmes were free, and the pool events cost only the normal pool fee of ₩1,000–3,000. The silent disco and silent yoga cost ₩9,000; the Night Walk, races, cruises and boat rides were paid and mostly booked online, with spare places sold on site. The Hangang swimming pools and water playgrounds themselves were open from 19 June to 30 August 2026, except Jamwon, which was closed for remodelling.

The honest caveats: there is no single festival ground, so choose the day and the park first. The heat itself reshapes the programme: in 2026 the overnight event was moved from 8 to 15 August and the Jamsil pool programme was retimed. The city warns that the parks and pools get very crowded and asks visitors to come by public transport. Dates for 2027 had not been announced as of 18 October 2026.

Highlights

  • Free films under the bridges, 20:00–22:00: Cheongdam Bridge (Ttukseom) and Cheonho Bridge (Gwangnaru) on 8 and 15 August, Wonhyo Bridge (Yeouido) on 8, 15 and 22 August
  • Pool parties for the ₩1,000–3,000 pool fee: live music at the Nanji water playground (1–2 August) and jultagi tightrope walking over the Jamsil pool (8–9 August)
  • My Own Hangang Boat Race at Jamsil on Liberation Day, 15 August: 100 teams race home-made boats (₩20,000 per team)
  • Overnight Hangang ON at Seoul Battleship Park in Mangwon, 20:00 on 15 August to 05:00 on 16 August, free, with drama screenings and a peach market
  • Discounts of 10–50% on yachts, kayaks, Tubester small boats and the Hi Seoul Cruise at Banpo and Yeouido throughout the run

Who it suits. Best for families with children, groups of friends and anyone in Seoul in August who wants a cheap evening by the river: a pool party, a free film or concert, a silent disco or a boat ride. Less suited to visitors expecting one festival site, or to anyone who struggles in the heat, because the programmes are spread across parks and most of them are outdoors in the hottest weeks of the year.

Getting there

From Seoul

Each programme is in a different park. For Yeouido Hangang Park (Night Walk start, silent disco under Mapo Bridge, yoga, cruises), take Line 5 to Yeouinaru Station, Exit 2, and walk towards Mapo Bridge; Dangsan Station (Line 2) Exit 4 is a longer riverside walk. For Jamsil Hangang Park (pool, boat race), Jamsilsaenae Station (Line 2) Exit 7 is about 10 minutes on foot. For Seoul Battleship Park in Mangwon Hangang Park, take Mapo bus 09 from Mangwon Station (Line 6) Exit 1, or Mapo 16 from Hapjeong Station Exit 1, then walk about 7 minutes. Jayang Station (Line 7) Exits 2 and 3 open straight onto Ttukseom Hangang Park, and Banpo Hangang Park is about 15 minutes on foot from Sinbanpo Station (Line 9) Exit 1.

From Incheon Airport

AREX all-stop train to Gongdeok Station, then Line 5 towards Banghwa to Yeouinaru Station, Exit 2, for Yeouido Hangang Park.

Last leg from Yeouinaru Station

Seoul Subway Line 5, Exit 2. A short walk towards Mapo Bridge to the Mulbit Stage area of Yeouido Hangang Park; the city gives no walking time

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle. The city suggests the Hangang Bus river boats for moving between parks; in September 2026 the fare was ₩3,000 and boats ran about once an hour. Timetables are at hgbus.co.kr.

Getting home

Most evening programmes (concerts, films, pool parties, the silent disco) ended by 22:00, before the last subway trains. The Night Walk (to 08:00) and the overnight Hangang ON at Mangwon (to 05:00) end around or after the first trains, and Tubester boats at Banpo run until 23:00, so check the last train if you stay late.

Parking

Parking is limited and the city asks visitors to use public transport. At Mangwon, drivers use the park's second and third car parks, reached from the Mangwon interchange on Gangbyeon-buk-ro. Parking outside marked spaces in the Hangang parks brings a ₩50,000 fine.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
