What it is like

Since 2020 the Nowon district has turned a stretch of Danghyeoncheon, a small stream running between the apartment blocks of Sanggye-dong and Junggye-dong in north-eastern Seoul, into an outdoor gallery of light sculptures for a few weeks each autumn. It is run by the Nowon Cultural Foundation, which says more than a million people come every year; the district counted about 660,000 visitors over the 2022 run.

The 2026 edition is the seventh. Under the theme 'New Moon', directed by Jeon Young-il, 24 Korean artist teams show about 30 works along the stream around Danghyeon Maru, a waterside café and rest space. The centrepiece at the fountain plaza is Gadget Studio's 'Earth's Pulse', an 11 m pavilion with 100 chairs and 1,000 balance blocks, and media artist Kim Chang-kyum reworks traditional dancheong patterns in light. The lights come on at 17:30 every evening; there are weekend performances at the fountain from 17 October and a guided Moonlight Tour every night at 19:30, plus audio guides on the official site.

Entry is free and there are no tickets: walk in from Junggye Station on Line 7 or Sanggye Station on Line 4. There is no festival parking.

The honest caveats: this is a neighbourhood festival in a residential district near the north-eastern end of Lines 4 and 7, not a big-production show, and the works are spread along an ordinary stream path. Weekend evenings are busy with local families. Sources disagree on the route's length (about 2 km on the official site, 1.3 km in a 2026 press report), so allow about an hour to walk it at an easy pace.

Highlights

  • About 30 light sculptures by 24 Korean artist teams along Danghyeoncheon stream, lit every evening from 17:30 to 22:00 (2026)
  • Gadget Studio's 'Earth's Pulse' at the fountain plaza: an 11 m pavilion with 100 chairs and 1,000 balance blocks
  • Kim Chang-kyum's media art reworking traditional dancheong (temple and palace painting) patterns in light
  • Moonlight Tour every evening 19:30–20:30 from Junggye Station Exit 6, booked online; audio guides on the official site
  • Weekend performances at the fountain plaza from 17 October 2026
  • Danghyeon Maru, a waterside café and rest space with an observation deck, beside the route

Who it suits. Best for visitors already in Seoul who want a free, unhurried evening walk with public art, families, and photographers; less suited to anyone expecting a single big show or short on time, since it is a long subway ride from the city centre to a residential district.

Getting there

From Seoul

Line 7 to Junggye Station, Exit 1 or 6, then straight ahead to the stream at Danghyeon 1 Bridge (the tour starting point); or Line 4 to Sanggye Station, Exit 3, then about 5 minutes on foot to the lower end of the stream. Line 4 runs direct from Seoul Station and Myeongdong to Sanggye. Buses: 1139, 1140 and 1143 to Sanggye-dong Gas Station, or 102 and Nowon 15 to Junggye Station Exit 1.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 4 north to Sanggye Station, Exit 3.

Last leg from Junggye Station

Seoul Subway Line 7, Exit 1. Exit 1 or 6, then straight ahead to the stream at Danghyeon 1 Bridge; Sanggye Station (Line 4) Exit 3 is about 5 minutes from the lower end

Getting home

The lights go off at 22:00. Line 4 and Line 7 trains keep running well after that, so getting home is easy; if you linger nearby, check the last train in a map app.

Parking

No festival parking; the organizer expects congestion and asks visitors to walk or use public transport.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
