Probably October 2027: the 2025 and 2026 editions both opened on 9 October (9–12 Oct 2025, 9–11 Oct 2026), and the city's 2026 guide for foreign residents lists it as an October festival. The 2024 edition was on 1–2 November, and the city's festival committee has discussed holding it apart from the Gunsan Time Travel Festival, so the timing could move. Gunsan City said in 2025 that it planned to keep the festival going; no 2027 dates had been announced as of 18 October 2026.

The Gunsan Jjamppong Festival (군산짬뽕페스티벌) is a free street-food festival in the old port district of Gunsan, Jeonbuk State, where about 20 booths from local Korean-Chinese restaurants and TV chefs sell the city's spicy jjamppong noodle soup, in half portions so you can try several. The 2026 edition ran 9–11 October around Baengnyeon Plaza in Jangmi-dong, 12:00–22:00, and drew about 80,000 people. 2027 dates have not been announced, though the last two editions both opened on 9 October. Entry is free and you pay per dish; express buses from Seoul Central City take just under 3 hours (from ₩16,400).

What it is like

Gunsan, a port city at the mouth of the Geum River, is one of the places Koreans associate with jjamppong, the spicy red noodle soup of Korean-Chinese restaurants. Chinese restaurants run by the local ethnic Chinese community once numbered more than 60 here, concentrated on Dongnyeong-gil and Jangmi-gil in the old port district; a little over 10 were left by 2019. The Korea Herald traces the local style to chomamyeon, a noodle dish in pork, beef and chicken bone broth that ethnic Chinese cooks made until the early 1970s, before local seafood and red pepper powder took over. With national funds won in 2018, the city turned part of Jangmi-dong into a jjamppong specialty street, which had 10 jjamppong restaurants by late 2023, including the long-established Binhaewon and Hongyeongjang.

The festival grew out of that street. A contactless online edition ran for two weeks in November 2020; the city's own guide counts the festival from 2022, and YTN called the 2025 edition the fourth. It nearly disappeared when the city council cut its entire 2024 budget, but ₩150 million was restored in June 2024, and that year it was held on the specialty street on 1–2 November. After complaints from residents it moved to Baengnyeon Plaza nearby, and in 2025 it ran 9–12 October, at the same time as the Gunsan Time Travel Festival in the same old town.

The 2026 edition ran Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October, 12:00–22:00 per KTO's data, with about 20 booths from Gunsan's traditional Chinese restaurants and collaborations with TV chefs: Mikael from JTBC's Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, and David Lee and Lee Mi-young, known from Netflix's Culinary Class Wars. Every Chinese-food booth sold jjamppong and jjajangmyeon in half portions, so you could compare meat and seafood versions. Daytime brought family games and hands-on activities, and in the evening an outdoor 'Jjamppong Restaurant' served food with live music. About 80,000 people came over the three days.

The honest caveats: this is a queueing festival. The star chefs' booths had long lines, and after 2025 the city's festival committee noted long waits, booths running out of ingredients early and uneven demand between famous and lesser-known restaurants. Dish prices and an English programme were not published, and the timing has moved between November and October, so wait for the 2027 announcement before booking. Outside the festival you can eat Gunsan jjamppong on the specialty street any time, and the colonial-era buildings of Jangmi-dong are around the corner.

Highlights

  • Gunsan's spicy jjamppong sold in half portions at every Chinese-food booth (2025 and 2026), so you can compare meat and seafood versions in one visit
  • About 20 booths in 2026 from Gunsan's traditional Chinese restaurants, plus collaborations with TV chefs Mikael, David Lee and Lee Mi-young
  • An evening outdoor 'Jjamppong Restaurant' with live music; the 2026 festival stayed open until 22:00
  • Set in Jangmi-dong, the old port district of colonial-era buildings, near the jjamppong specialty street and its 10 jjamppong restaurants (2023)
  • Family games and hands-on activities, such as the 'Bubbling Wish Jjamppong Soup' and 'Beat the K-Tourism Island' programmes in 2026
  • Free entry; about 80,000 visitors over three days in 2026

Who it suits. Best for food-focused travelers and anyone exploring Gunsan's old town who wants to taste several versions of the city's jjamppong in one place; it works as a long day trip from Seoul or as part of a Gunsan weekend. Less suited to people who avoid spicy food, dislike queues, or need English signage and programmes.

Getting there

From Seoul

Express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Central City, Honam line) to Gunsan Express Bus Terminal on Haemang-ro. In the Gunsan–Seoul timetable buses run all day (50 departures between 05:00 and 22:00), take 2 h 54 m and cost ₩16,400 standard, ₩23,900 deluxe or ₩31,000 premium; from the terminal take a taxi or city bus to Baengnyeon Plaza in Jangmi-dong. By rail there is no KTX to Gunsan: Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains on the Janghang Line run from Yongsan to Gunsan Station 14–15 times a day (05:32–20:43), taking 3 h 07 m–3 h 35 m, ₩21,600 Saemaeul or ₩14,500 Mugunghwa. Gunsan Station is in Naeheung-dong, away from the old town, so continue by taxi or city bus. A faster rail option is KTX from Yongsan to Iksan (usually 1 h 17 m–1 h 25 m), then a connection to Gunsan, whose times were not checked.

From Busan

Intercity bus from Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo, Line 1 Nopo Station) to Gunsan Intercity Bus Terminal at 18 Haemang-ro: 7 a day (08:05–19:00), 3 h 35 m, ₩38,000 deluxe class (the only class listed). Gunsan Express Bus Terminal has no Busan route. Then take a taxi or city bus to Baengnyeon Plaza in Jangmi-dong, as above.

Last leg from Gunsan Station

Janghang Line (Korail Saemaeul/Mugunghwa from Yongsan). Not walkable: the station is in Naeheung-dong, away from the old town; take a taxi or city bus to Jangmi-dong

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was found for 2024–2026. A city bus stop named after the Gunsan Modern History Museum (근대역사박물관) is about a minute's walk from the museum in the old port district.

Getting home

The 2026 festival ran until 22:00. Last trains from Gunsan to Yongsan in the 17–23 Oct 2026 timetable: Saemaeul 19:25 (arrives 22:48) and Mugunghwa 20:26 (arrives 23:55). Express buses from Gunsan to Seoul Central City run until 22:00 (premium class; ₩37,200 on the 22:00 bus, a late-night fare). To stay for the evening Jjamppong Restaurant, book a room in Gunsan.

Parking

No festival parking plan was found. A May 2026 visitor guide says the Gunsan Modern History Museum's car parks fill early on weekend mornings and points to public parking at Jinpo Maritime Theme Park, by the inner harbour, at Baengnyeon Plaza and in Jangmi-dong, all described as free; during the festival the plaza itself is the venue, so come by bus or taxi.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
