What it is like

Jagalchi Market sits on Busan's South Port (Namhang) in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, and is one of the city's best-known sights, selling fresh seafood alongside grilled-fish stalls and raw-fish restaurants. KTO traces it back to 1889, when a Japanese fisheries company was set up nearby, and to 1922, when a fisheries cooperative began consignment sales in Nampo-dong and retail traders gathered round them. The festival has been held around the market since 1992 and borrows its themes from the vendors' call in Busan dialect, 'Oiso, boiso, saiso' — come, look, buy. In 2015 its programme was split into 'come', 'look' and 'buy' sections.

The 2026 festival was the 33rd edition. It ran 15–18 October, 11:30–22:00 according to KTO, at Jagalchi Market and Yurari Plaza (유라리광장), and entry was free. It opened on Thursday 15 October at 19:00 with a fireworks show over the harbour and concerts by Song Ga-in, Son Min-chae and Baek Su-jeong. The programme also included the Jagalchi Yongsin-je, a rite for the dragon king of the sea; a street parade from the Busan Modern History Museum through City Spot and Gwangbok-ro Fountain Plaza to the main stage; an eel relay race; a 'Find the Golden Fish' game; a free seafood tasting; and an attempt at the world's largest raw-fish bibimbap, shared out free. A food zone used Jagalchi's dried seafood, and there were interpretation booths for foreign visitors.

The 2025 festival (32nd, 23–26 October) followed the same pattern, adding a college song festival, a K-pop dance contest, busking, a flea market and food trucks. The bibimbap is the long-running signature: in 2015 it fed 2,400 people from the main stage.

Entry costs nothing, but you pay for food and seafood. Prices depend on the species, the size and how you order, so ask before ordering whether cleaning, cooking or a table charge is added. The market keeps its normal hours of 05:00–22:00 outside the festival; it closes on some Tuesdays (KTO's Korean data says the first, third and fifth, its Chinese data the first and third).

The honest caveats: the 2027 dates had not been announced by 19 October 2026; the stage programme is in Korean; apart from the opening ceremony, no day-by-day timetable for 2026 was found; and the sign-up rules for the hands-on games were not published.

Highlights

  • Free, four days, Thursday to Sunday: the 33rd edition ran 15–18 October 2026, 11:30–22:00 (KTO), around Jagalchi Market and Yurari Plaza in Nampo-dong
  • Opening night, Thursday 15 October 2026 at 19:00: fireworks over the South Port (Namhang) and concerts by Song Ga-in, Son Min-chae and Baek Su-jeong
  • The Jagalchi Yongsin-je rite to the dragon king of the sea, and a street parade from the Busan Modern History Museum via Gwangbok-ro to the main stage
  • Eel relay races, 'Find the Golden Fish', free seafood tastings and an attempt at the world's largest raw-fish bibimbap (2,400 servings in 2015)
  • A food zone built around Jagalchi's dried seafood, and interpretation booths for foreign visitors in 2026
  • Held since 1992 at the market that grew up around consignment fish sales on the South Port from 1922

Who it suits. Best for travellers in Busan in October who enjoy seafood markets and street festivals, and for families: the eel relays, fish games and harbour fireworks need no Korean. Less suited to anyone who needs English-language programmes, dislikes the bustle and smell of a working fish market, or would travel from Seoul just for this festival.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station, about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger). Then take Busan Metro Line 1 three stops south to Jagalchi Station and leave by Exit 10; the market is about 2 minutes' walk away.

From Busan

Busan Metro Line 1 to Jagalchi Station, Exit 10, then about 2 minutes on foot. Nampo Station, the next stop (0.7 km), is handy for Gwangbok-ro and BIFF Square. Busan Station is three stops north of Jagalchi; from Haeundae or Gwangalli, take Line 2 to Seomyeon and change to Line 1.

From Incheon Airport

Domestic flight from Incheon to Gimhae (Busan), then the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail three stops to Sasang, Metro Line 2 to Seomyeon and Line 1 to Jagalchi (about an hour from the airport to the city centre). Or take AREX to Seoul Station and the KTX to Busan Station, then Line 1 three stops to Jagalchi.

Last leg from Jagalchi Station

Busan Metro Line 1, Exit 10. About 2 minutes on foot from Exit 10 to the market; Nampo Station, 0.7 km away on the same line, also works

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was announced on the pages opened. In 2015 a festival boat ran to Taejongdae; no boat service was found for 2026.

Getting home

The 2026 programme ran to 22:00 (KTO). Busan Station is three stops from Jagalchi on Line 1, and the KTX to Seoul Station takes about 2 h 30 m. Check the last train back to Seoul in the Korail app (코레일+) or at the station before the festival day, and leave the market with time to spare.

Parking

No festival parking information was published. Yongdusan Park, 471 m from KTO's festival point, has a car park charging ₩500 per 10 minutes or ₩15,000 a day (KTO); the metro is simpler.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm

  • The organizer's site (ejagalchi.co.kr) was not opened because no search returned it; the 2026 programme rests on Busan city's festival news, KTO data (the ktriptips Spanish mirror), iNews24 and News-WA.
  • No day-by-day 2026 timetable was found beyond the opening ceremony (15 Oct, 19:00): the days and times of the Yongsin-je, the parade, the bibimbap and the hands-on games were not checked.
  • KTO's Korean contentId was not found: the festival is not in the site's TourAPI snapshot (listed.json), and only the Spanish-service contentId 724050 (ktriptips mirror) was opened.
  • Japanese name: a Busan city Japanese page returned by a search for 釜山チャガルチ祭り could not be opened (server error); Japanese travel sites write チャガルチ祭り, so names.ja is left null.
  • firstHeld 1992 is inferred from the edition numbers (19th in 2010, 24th in 2015); a 2002 article called that year's festival the 7th. The 30th in 2023 implies two years without a festival after 2015, probably 2020–2021; this was not checked.
  • 2024 hours and programme were not checked; the 2025 hours come from a festival aggregator only.
  • Whether the hands-on games charge a fee or need sign-up, and where the main stage and Yurari Plaza sit within the market area, were not published on the pages opened.
  • KTO's Korean data closes Jagalchi Market on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays; its Chinese data says the first and third.
  • Jagalchi Station Exit 10 and the 2-minute walk come from a 2015 news article and a Japanese travel site, not from a 2026 festival notice.
  • Busan city gave the festival website as ejagalchi.com in 2024 and ejagalchi.co.kr in 2025 and 2026.
  • The rail fare was copied from the site's Busan Fireworks Festival record (Korail fare table effective 1 Sep 2026; checked 16 Oct 2026).
  • Accessibility, rain policy, pets, foreign-card acceptance, crowd levels and visitor numbers were not published.
  • Last train back from Busan Station to Seoul on the festival date under the timetable in force that day (a new KTX timetable started on 1 Nov 2026).

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a Wikimedia Commons photograph of the 2015 festival (Asura9047, CC BY-SA 3.0). · 2026-10-20 — 1 November timetable change written as upcoming; parade day and time marked as not checked. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the October 2026 KTX last-train times (a new Korail timetable starts on 1 Nov 2026); journey time and fare kept, with a reminder to check the last train before the festival day.
