What it is like

BIFF began in 1996 in Nampo-dong, the downtown cinema quarter by Jagalchi, and the square at its heart has been called BIFF Square ever since, with the handprints of filmmakers set in the pavement. The Korea Tourism Organization calls it the largest film festival in Asia. Since 2011 its centre has been the Busan Cinema Center in Centum City, a building whose cantilevered roof (162.53 × 60.8 m) is listed by Guinness World Records and shelters an outdoor theatre of about 4,000 seats, where the opening and closing ceremonies are held.

The 31st edition ran 6–15 October 2026: 247 invited films from 59 countries plus 69 Community BIFF films, shown at 8 theatres with 31 screens, most of them around Centum City (the Cinema Center, CGV and Lotte Cinema in the Shinsegae area). Counting talks and events, the festival recorded 277,027 attendances, its highest since 2015. Since 2025 it has had a competition, the Busan Award, whose grand-prize winner, the festival says, becomes eligible for the Oscar for international feature, and 2026 was the first edition after FIAPF listed it as an A-list festival.

You do not need to work in film to take part. Almost everything is open to anyone with a ticket: ordinary screenings at ₩10,000, many with a director's Q&A (304 in 2026), Open Cinema screenings under the big roof, the Actors' House talks and master classes at ₩15,000, and the ceremonies at ₩30,000. In Nampo-dong, Community BIFF adds audience-programmed screenings at the Megabox Busan Theater and street booths and outdoor evenings on BIFF Square.

The honest caveats: tickets are sold online on fixed sale days in mid-September, two per screening, and popular screenings sell out; residents quoted after the 2026 festival said tickets were harder to get than before. The website needs an account and a one-time mobile-phone check, and the published sources do not say whether foreign phone numbers or foreign-issued cards are accepted. During the festival the BIFF box offices sell only returned or unsold seats. The 2026 edition ran in October, but the 2025 edition was in September, so check the dates before planning a trip around it.

Highlights

  • 247 invited films from 59 countries plus 69 Community BIFF films in 2026, at 8 theatres and 31 screens
  • Opening ceremony and red carpet at 18:00 on 6 October 2026 in the outdoor theatre of the Busan Cinema Center, under a roof listed by Guinness World Records
  • Open Cinema: screenings in the outdoor theatre of about 4,000 seats, at the standard ₩10,000 ticket price
  • 304 audience Q&As and 72 events in 2026, including open talks, outdoor stage greetings, the Actors' House and master classes (Alfonso Cuarón, Na Hong-jin and Rintaro)
  • Community BIFF in Nampo-dong, where the festival began: the Night Before BIFF on BIFF Square (5 Oct 2026, 19:00), street booths 11:00–19:00 on 8–11 October and the Nampo Finale on 11 October
  • Busan Award competition (since 2025): 13 Asian films in 2026, with the grand-prize winner eligible for an Oscar submission, according to the festival

Who it suits. Best for film lovers who can plan ahead, book on the September sale days and stay a few nights in Busan; casual visitors can still catch an Open Cinema screening, a Q&A or the street events on BIFF Square in Nampo-dong. Less suited to anyone who wants to decide on the day, because popular screenings sell out online and the box offices sell only returns.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station, about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger). Then take Busan Metro Line 1 about 10 minutes to Seomyeon and change to Line 2 eastbound for Centum City Station; leave by Exit 12, walk past Shinsegae Centum City, turn right and go straight about 200 m to the Busan Cinema Center. For Community BIFF in Nampo-dong, stay on Line 1 south from Busan Station to Nampo or Jagalchi Station instead.

From Busan

Busan Metro Line 2 to Centum City Station, Exit 12, for the Busan Cinema Center and the Centum City cinemas. For Community BIFF, Line 1 to Jagalchi Station (Exit 3 has a lift and leads to the Megabox Busan Theater) or Nampo Station; BIFF Square is a short walk from both, and the area is easiest on foot.

From Incheon Airport

Domestic flight to Gimhae Airport, then the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail about 7 minutes to Sasang and Line 2 east to Centum City without changing; or AREX to Seoul Station and KTX to Busan Station.

Last leg from Centum City Station

Busan Metro Line 2, Exit 12. Past Shinsegae Centum City, then right and about 200 m straight on to the Busan Cinema Center

Getting home

The closing ceremony starts at 19:00 and evening screenings finish late, so most visitors stay the night. Back to Seoul, the KTX from Busan Station takes about 2 h 30 m; last-train times for the 2027 festival dates were not checked, so check the last KTX in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at Busan Station before the festival day. Allow up to an hour from Centum City to Busan Station (Line 2 to Seomyeon, then Line 1).

Parking

The Busan Cinema Center car park is free for the first 30 minutes, then ₩1,000 per 30 minutes up to ₩15,000 a day; film and performance ticket holders get 4 hours free (KTO). Festival-time availability was not published. There is no parking at BIFF Square.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Booking
Online on the official site (biff.kr, with an English version); in 2026 sales opened on 17 September 14:00 for ceremonies, Open Cinema, Midnight Passion, the Actors' House and Community BIFF, and on 21 September 14:00 for everything else, two tickets per screening code. Sign up and register a payment method before sale day; first-time users verify a mobile phone number once. Online payment is by credit card, debit card or simple-pay app. During the festival the BIFF box offices (Busan Cinema Center outdoor box office 08:30–20:30; separate counters at CGV and Lotte Cinema Centum City; Megabox Busan Theater 4F 09:30–20:00 for Community BIFF) sell returned and unsold seats; on the opening day the outdoor box office sold only next-day tickets. Free cancellation up to 6 days before; refunds until 60 minutes before the screening.
Foreign cards
Not confirmed either way. The organizer's 2026 information lists credit cards, debit cards and simple-pay apps online, but does not say whether foreign-issued cards or foreign mobile numbers pass the website's payment and one-time phone check. At the box offices, card and cash payment is listed (Community BIFF 2026 at the Megabox counter; all box offices in the 2022 English ticket guide), so buying a returned seat on site is the fallback.
English on site
The official site has an English version (biff.kr/eng) with a booking-information page, and the 2022 ticket guide was published in English. Not every film or Q&A has English subtitles or interpretation; check each film's subtitle marking.
Crowds
Busy: 277,027 attendances in 2026, including 185,239 at invited-film screenings and 76,984 at talks and events. Popular screenings sell out online, and Centum City is crowded around the ceremonies.
Best time to go
Be online at 14:00 on the sale days in mid-September. During the festival, check the box offices for returns; the opening and closing nights are the busiest.
What to bring
Your phone with the mobile ticket (a screenshot or confirmation message is not accepted for entry), a warm layer for evening screenings in the outdoor theatre, and photo ID if claiming a senior or disability discount. Lockers are available at Nampo Station, Jagalchi Station and the Megabox ground floor.
Step-free access
11 barrier-free screenings in 2026; a limited number of on-site seats are set aside for people aged 65+ and people with disabilities (ID or disability card required). For the Megabox Busan Theater, take the lift inside Jagalchi Station Exit 3 and the slope at the cinema entrance, then the lift to the 4th floor.

Busan Metro Line 2 to Centum City Station, Exit 12; walk past Shinsegae Centum City, turn right and go about 200 m. From Seoul, take the KTX to Busan Station (about 2 h 30 m, ₩54,400), then Line 1 to Seomyeon and Line 2 east.
