What it is like

Hwaseong is a late-18th-century walled fortress built by King Jeongjo around the town of Suwon, with a detached palace (Haenggung) at its centre; its walls, gates and pavilions survive intact. The festival commemorates Jeongjo's eight-day 1795 procession from Seoul to Hwaseong, recorded in detail in a court document, and the centrepiece is a reenactment of that procession: thousands of costumed participants, horses and palanquins moving through the city. In 2026 the Suwon leg ran on Sunday 4 October from the Nosong pine-tree road at 13:00, past the stadium and in through Janganmun, the north gate, at about 17:00, arriving at Haenggung Square at 18:00 for the king's entry performance and a 19:00 finale. The rest of the week was built around three evening shows: 'Yajo', a staged night military drill with horses and fireworks at the Yeonmudae training ground (20:00 on 7, 9 and 10 October); 'Seonyumong', a water performance on the pond below Banghwasuryujeong pavilion (19:00 nightly); and 'Haenggung Yahwa', a one-hour night walk-through performance inside the palace (19:00, 20:00, 21:00 nightly from 3 October). Daytime brings a civil-service exam reenactment, a banquet for elders, a citizens' art project on the square, a global village lounge for foreign visitors, and a palanquin race. Caveats: the festival has no food booths, so eat in the Haenggung-dong streets; the procession day closes major roads from 13:00 to 20:00 and public car parks fill early; Seonyumong ends at 20:00 just as Yajo starts at a different venue, so pick one; and Yajo seat prices were not published on the site.

Highlights

  • King Jeongjo royal procession reenactment on 4 October 2026: 13:00 from Nosong pine road, 17:00 at Janganmun gate, 18:00 palace entry at Haenggung Square, 19:00 'Jeongjo Fantasy' finale
  • 'Suwon Fantasy: Yajo' night military-drill show with horses and fireworks at Yeonmudae, 20:00–21:00 on 7, 9 and 10 October
  • 'Seonyumong' water performance on the Yongyeon pond below Banghwasuryujeong, 19:00–20:00 nightly 5–11 October (some reserved seats ₩5,000)
  • 'Time Travel: Haenggung Yahwa', a 60-minute night performance walk inside Hwaseong Haenggung, 19:00/20:00/21:00 nightly from 3 October (₩2,000 palace entry)
  • Byeolsinal civil-exam reenactment and a palanquin race on Haenggung Square; Yangnoyeon banquet for elders at Nangnamheon on 10 October
  • Seoul–festival shuttle buses from Myeongdong/Dongdaemun, Hongdae and Gwanghwamun, twice daily, sold via Trip.com

Who it suits. Best for history-minded travelers, photographers and families who want a full day at a fortress with free entertainment, and for anyone based in Seoul who wants a day trip; less suited to people who dislike crowds or road closures, because the procession Sunday is the busiest day in Suwon's year.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
