Expected

Probably a weekend in late November or early December 2026, following 1–3 Dec 2023 and 29–30 Nov 2025. Not announced by Seocheon County as of 21 October 2026. K-Festival magazine's October 2026 issue (p. 101) printed 29–30 Nov 2026 with the 2025 programme and times, but calls 29 November a Saturday, which fits 2025, not 2026.

The Seocheon Migratory Bird Festival (서천철새여행, 'Seocheon bird journey') is a small weekend festival at the Seocheon Bird Ecology Center by the Geum River estuary barrage in Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do, where the county says about 500,000 birds of some 40 species winter each year. It runs guided birdwatching tours, family booths and shows. The 2025 edition ran 29–30 November; as of 21 October 2026 Seocheon County had not announced 2026 dates, and late November or early December is likely. From Seoul, trains run from Yongsan to Janghang in about 3 h 6 m–3 h 28 m (₩14,100 Mugunghwa).

Not yet confirmed for the 2026 edition: opening hours or show times, prices, how to book, the programme or line-up, shuttle buses, road closures or parking. Check the organizer's page before you go.

What it is like

The Geum River meets the Yellow Sea at Seocheon in Chungcheongnam-do, across the water from Gunsan. Since the estuary barrage was finished in 1990 the river mouth and the tidal flats beyond it have become a major wintering ground: Seocheon County counts the 'Geum River estuary barrage migratory bird site' among its nine scenic views, with about 500,000 birds of some 40 species each winter, and the flats around Yubu-do island, part of the tidal flats inscribed as World Natural Heritage, are a major stop for shorebirds. Whooper swans and the mass flights of Baikal teal are the stars.

The festival is the county's weekend celebration of their return, held around its Bird Ecology Center (조류생태전시관), a four-storey exhibition building beside the barrage with a rooftop observation garden. In 2025, on 29–30 November, an opening ceremony on the Saturday afternoon was followed by guided birdwatching tours to the estuary (Saturday 10:00 and 14:30, Sunday 10:00 and 13:30), hands-on booths, a magic show and balloon art for children, and programmes by the National Institute of Ecology, which is also in Seocheon. A 'stamp challenge' sent visitors round the county's bird sites with a camera from mid-November to 10 December, and entrants went into a draw for a birding trip to Yubu-do, an island normally closed to visitors. About 10,000 people came over the weekend.

The caveats: as of 21 October 2026 the county had not announced the 2026 dates. A festival magazine printed 29–30 November 2026, with the 2025 programme and times, but it calls 29 November a Saturday, which it is in 2025 and not in 2026, so treat those dates as unconfirmed. Everything is in Korean, tours are short and small, and in avian-flu season access to the habitats themselves can be restricted to the observation decks. Dress for wind and cold, and bring binoculars.

Highlights

  • Winter flocks at the Geum River estuary: Seocheon County says about 500,000 birds of some 40 species spend the winter here
  • Whooper swans and the mass flights of Baikal teal, the festival's two headline birds
  • Guided birdwatching tours to the estuary (2025: Sat 10:00 and 14:30, Sun 10:00 and 13:30)
  • Rooftop observation garden and exhibitions at the Seocheon Bird Ecology Center beside the estuary barrage
  • Family booths, a magic show and balloon art; National Institute of Ecology programmes on wild birds
  • A stamp challenge round the county's bird sites, with a draw for a trip to Yubu-do, an island in the World Heritage tidal flats normally closed to visitors

Who it suits. Best for birders, photographers and families with children who want a gentle introduction to Korea's winter birds; less suited to visitors looking for a large festival, English-language guiding or a firm date to plan around until the county announces 2026.

Getting there

From Seoul

Train from Yongsan Station to Janghang Station on the Janghang Line: about 14 a day, 3 h 15 m–3 h 28 m by Mugunghwa (₩14,100) or 3 h 6 m–3 h 19 m by Saemaeul (₩20,900); there is no KTX. Check the trains for your date in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go. From Janghang Station take a taxi to the Bird Ecology Center by the Geum River estuary barrage (time and fare not checked).

Last leg from Janghang Station

Korail Janghang Line (Mugunghwa and Saemaeul from Yongsan). Take a taxi to the Bird Ecology Center (distance and fare not checked)

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle has been published for 2026; none was reported in 2025.

Getting home

The 2026 dates are not announced, and the last trains from Janghang to Yongsan on the festival date have not been checked. Check the last train back in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are also booked since the 1 September 2026 merger) or at Janghang Station before you go, and allow time for the taxi back to the station.

Parking

The Bird Ecology Center's own car park holds about 10 cars; when it is full, use the Kim In-jeon Park car park nearby (KTO). Festival parking for 2026 not published.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Checked 18 October 2026.

2026 Probably a weekend in late November or early December 2026, following 1–3 Dec 2023 and 29–30 Nov 2025. Not announced by Seocheon County as of 21 October 2026. K-Festival magazine's October 2026 issue (p. 101) printed 29–30 Nov 2026 with the 2025 programme and times, but calls 29 November a Saturday, which fits 2025, not 2026. expected The magazine listing gives the Bird Ecology Center (041-956-4002) and the county tourist information centre (041-952-9525) for enquiries; its programme (opening Sat 14:00, tours Sat 10:00 and 14:30 and Sun 10:00 and 13:30, booths, magic show, balloon art) is identical to the 2025 edition's.
2025 29–30 Nov 2025 ended Around the Seocheon Bird Ecology Center and the estuary bird sites.
2023 1–3 Dec 2023 ended Seocheon Bird Ecology Center.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • National Institute of Ecology (국립생태원)Before

Korea's national ecology research and exhibition centre, whose Ecorium is a set of large glass greenhouses recreating five climate zones, from tropical rainforest and desert to the polar regions. Go straight from the train: from November it is open 09:30–17:00, with ticket sales ending at 16:00 (adult ₩5,000; closed Mondays), so a morning there leaves the afternoon for the estuary. The flocks are at their best around sunset, so do not linger past lunch.

Getting there: Taxi from Janghang Station on arrival, then on to the Bird Ecology Center; times and fares not checked

  • Geumgang Ecological Park bird decks (금강생태공원)Before or after

A riverside park on the Geum River estuary with two observation decks over the wintering flocks of Baikal teal, mallards and gulls, reached by a 1.3 km path with a cycle lane, bird-watching shelters and sculptures from the Bird Ecology Center. It is open at all hours, so walk it after the last tour and watch the flocks as the light drops. In avian-flu season access can be limited to the decks; bring binoculars.

Getting there: On foot from the Bird Ecology Center along the 1.3 km riverside path; no transport needed

  • Getting awayAfter

No festival shuttle ran in 2025, and the Bird Ecology Center is a taxi ride from Janghang Station with parking for only about 10 cars, so do not count on a taxi waiting at the end of the day. Arrange the ride back before the last tour ends and leave a margin for your train; check the last train to Yongsan in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go.

Questions travelers ask

When is the Seocheon Migratory Bird Festival 2026?

Not announced yet (as of 21 October 2026). It is likely on a weekend in late November or early December: the 2025 edition ran 29–30 November and the 2023 edition 1–3 December. A magazine printed 29–30 November 2026, but with the 2025 weekdays, so wait for Seocheon County's announcement.

What can you see?

Seocheon County says about 500,000 birds of some 40 species winter at the Geum River estuary; whooper swans and flocks of Baikal teal are the highlights. The festival adds guided birdwatching tours, family booths, a magic show and balloon art (2025 programme).

How do I get there from Seoul?

Take a train from Yongsan to Janghang (14 a day; 3 h 15 m–3 h 28 m by Mugunghwa for ₩14,100, or 3 h 6 m–3 h 19 m by Saemaeul for ₩20,900), then a taxi to the Bird Ecology Center at 916 Jangsan-ro, Maseo-myeon.

Can I do it as a day trip from Seoul?

Probably: trains run through the day (about 14 each way) and take a little over 3 hours. Check the last train back from Janghang in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go, and allow for the taxi between the station and the Bird Ecology Center.

Can I visit the birds outside the festival?

Yes. The Bird Ecology Center is open 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed on Mondays, with a ₩1,500 adult fee, and a 1.3 km path with bird hides runs from it to Geumgang Ecological Park. In avian-flu season access to the habitats can be limited to the observation decks.

  • 2024 edition not found in the sources opened; it may not have been held.
  • First year not verified: Seocheon held a three-day migratory-bird festival at the Bird Ecology Center in November 2011, and Gunsan and Seocheon held a joint Geum River bird festival in 2016.
  • Taxi time and fare from Janghang Station (or Seocheon Station) to the Bird Ecology Center and the National Institute of Ecology, and between the two, and any local bus, not checked.

  • KTO does not list the festival (no content id for the watch map as of 21 Oct 2026).
  • Japanese and Chinese names not verified on a KTO foreign-language page.
  • Last train back from Janghang to Yongsan on the festival date under the timetable in force that day (in the 1 Nov 2026 revision Mugunghwa 1287 gains a Seocheon stop, per a third-party diff).
  • National Institute of Ecology winter hours (09:30–17:00, tickets to 16:00, November–February) come from a February 2026 news report, not the institute's own site; the Janghang night-tour record quotes 09:30–17:30 for October.
