What it is like

Chuncheon, the lakeside capital of Gangwon, has staged a mime festival every spring since 1989; the 2026 edition was the 38th. The organizers bill it as one of the world's three major mime festivals, alongside Mimos in France and the London mime festival, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism lists it as an Honorary Culture and Tourism Festival and as one of its Local 100. Mime is meant broadly here: alongside silent theatre there is clowning, circus, dance, aerial work and street performance by Korean and foreign companies (37 teams in 2025). The festival runs for eight days, Sunday to Sunday, and is spread across the city rather than held on one site. It starts with 아!水라장, a pun on the Korean word for pandemonium with the character for water in the middle: a free water party on a closed four-lane stretch of Jungang-ro in the city centre, where performers and spectators soak each other. It has opened the festival on Jungang-ro since 2006; 2026 was its last year there, and from 2027 it moves to the area around the festival's own venue, Festival Theatre Momjit in Hyoja-dong. Through the week there are ticketed indoor shows at Momjit, free evening mime along the Seoksacheon stream path and in Udu Park, and a touring troupe that plays schools, hospitals and tourist sites. The last weekend is the core of the festival. In 2026 a new adults-only night, Art Nanjang X, ran from 20:00 to 02:00 on the Friday, and on the Saturday Dokkaebi Nanjang (the 'goblin revel'), held since 1998, ran from 14:00 until 05:00 the next morning on the LEGOLAND Korea Resort car park on Jungdo, with more than 60 groups, movement workshops for the audience, fire installations, the final of a competition for emerging mime artists and a closing mime at dawn. Things to know: the programme and ticket pages are in Korean, and tickets are sold through Korean platforms (Mango Ticket and Naver Booking); the opening means getting wet; venues are spread out, so budget for taxis; and the overnight finale ends hours after the last train to Seoul, so plan a night in Chuncheon or wait for the first morning train.

Highlights

  • 아!水라장 opening water party on a closed four-lane stretch of Jungang-ro, free (13:00–16:00 on 24 May 2026); from 2027 it moves to the Festival Theatre Momjit area
  • Dokkaebi Nanjang, the overnight finale held since 1998: 60-plus groups in mime, dance, circus and aerial acts from 14:00 to 05:00, ending with a closing mime at dawn (₩25,000 in 2026)
  • Art Nanjang X, an experimental night for ages 19 and over, 20:00–02:00 on the final Friday (₩20,000 in 2026)
  • Indoor mime and physical-theatre shows at Festival Theatre Momjit (₩15,000 each in 2026), including a family show
  • Free 'Walk and Watch Mime' on weekday evenings at 19:30 along the Seoksacheon stream path and in Udu Park
  • Mime Fringe final for emerging artists (10 teams in 2026) on the Dokkaebi Nanjang stage, with a Minister of Culture award for the winner

Who it suits. Best for travellers who enjoy street theatre, circus and festival nights out, and for families on the opening water-party day; the overnight finale suits night owls who are happy to stay in Chuncheon. Less suited to anyone who wants a single compact site or English-language programme information.

Getting there

From Seoul

ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan Station (it also calls at Cheongnyangni) to Chuncheon takes about 1 h 20 m (1 h 13 m–1 h 26 m as of October 2026) and costs ₩9,800 for a reserved seat (₩9,300 standing); as of October 2026 there were about 18 trains each way on weekdays and more on Sundays. Namchuncheon Station is the closer stop for Festival Theatre Momjit in Hyoja-dong; Chuncheon Station is the closer one for Jungang-ro and for the LEGOLAND Korea Resort car park on Jungdo, where the night events are held. The slower Gyeongchun Line (Seoul Metro) also serves both stations. Venues are spread out, so taxis are the easiest way between them.

From Busan

KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station (about 2 h 30 m, ₩54,400 standard class since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger), then Line 1 to Yongsan and ITX-Cheongchun to Chuncheon (about 1 h 20 m, ₩9,800).

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, Line 1 to Yongsan, then ITX-Cheongchun to Chuncheon (about 1 h 20 m).

Last leg from Namchuncheon Station (festival theatre); Chuncheon Station (Jungang-ro and night events)

ITX-Cheongchun and Gyeongchun Line (Seoul Metro). Walking times were not published. Festival Theatre Momjit in Hyoja-dong is a short taxi ride from Namchuncheon Station; the LEGOLAND Korea Resort car park on Jungdo, used for the night events, is closest to Chuncheon Station.

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle bus was documented for 2024–2026 in the sources opened; check mimefestival.com before the night events.

Getting home

ITX-Cheongchun trains from Chuncheon back to Yongsan take about 1 h 15 m. Weekday and Sunday times differ, so check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go and compare it with the end of the evening programme. The overnight Dokkaebi Nanjang runs to 05:00, so stay the night in Chuncheon or wait for the first morning train. Gyeongchun Line (Seoul Metro) trains also run to Seoul; their times were not checked.

Parking

Festival parking was not published in the sources opened. The opening closes Jungang-ro to traffic, and in 2025 and 2026 the night events were held on the LEGOLAND Korea Resort car park itself, so trains and taxis are simpler.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
