What it is like
The Moonlight Tour is the night programme of Changdeokgung, the Joseon-dynasty palace in central Seoul that is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is best known for its rear garden, Huwon, often called the Secret Garden. Small groups carry cheongsachorong (traditional silk lanterns) and follow a professional guide through the palace and the garden after dark, with live traditional music along the way. It was first run in 2010, and 2026 was its 17th year. It is hosted by the Korea Heritage Service's Royal Palaces and Tombs Center and run by the National Heritage Promotion Agency (formerly the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation). There are now two seasons a year: spring, from mid-April to late May or mid-June, and autumn, from September to October or early November.
The autumn 2026 season ran from 10 September to 17 October, Thursday to Sunday. Each night had six departures in two parts (19:10, 19:15 and 19:20, then 20:00, 20:05 and 20:10), each a group of 28, which made 3,864 places in all. The walk takes about 100 minutes. It enters at Geumhomun Gate, crosses Geumcheongyo Bridge, passes Injeongjeon throne hall and Huijeongdang, and continues to Nakseonjae, where a daegeum (bamboo flute) player performs at Sangnyangjeong pavilion. In the Secret Garden, actors re-enact a Joseon royal stroll beside Buyongji Pond for photos. The route then passes Aeryeonjeong to Yeongyeongdang, where a traditional ensemble plays and dancers perform court dance created by Crown Prince Hyomyeong while guests have tea and traditional sweets. It ends along the garden's forest path. The spring 2026 season ran from 16 April to 31 May on a similar route, with a programme built around King Jeongjo and Crown Prince Hyomyeong.
Tickets are paid, about ₩30,000 per person. General sessions are allotted by lottery on Ticketlink about three to four weeks before each season, with one entry per ID and up to two tickets per winner. Seats left over are then sold first come, first served, and some are set aside for phone booking by people aged 65 and over, people with disabilities and national merit holders. Foreign visitors have their own nights, usually four Sundays a season, with guides in English, Chinese and Japanese, sold first come, first served on Creatrip. Both 2026 seasons have ended, and 2027 dates had not been announced as of 19 October 2026.
The honest caveats: places are few and sell out. The 2026 age limit (7 and over) comes from a booking guide rather than the official notice, and the 2025 limit was reported as 8 and over. The route has slopes and is dimly lit. In 2025 a night's tour was cancelled, with a full refund, if heavy rain was forecast or wild boars appeared in the garden.
Highlights
- Guided walk by lantern light through Changdeokgung after dark, from Injeongjeon throne hall and Nakseonjae into the Secret Garden (Huwon)
- Daegeum (bamboo flute) solo at Sangnyangjeong, the pavilion above Nakseonjae, which this tour opens to visitors
- Buyongji Pond at night, with actors re-enacting a Joseon royal stroll for photos
- Court dance created by Crown Prince Hyomyeong and a traditional ensemble at Yeongyeongdang, served with tea and traditional sweets
- Small groups: 28 people per departure, six departures a night between 19:10 and 20:10, about 100 minutes each (autumn 2026)
- Foreign-language nights with English, Chinese and Japanese guides, sold through Creatrip
- Held since 2010; 2026 was its 17th year
Who it suits. Best for visitors who want a quiet, small-group look at a UNESCO palace and its Secret Garden after dark, with live traditional music and tea, and who can plan around a lottery or Creatrip's foreign-visitor sale. Less suited to young children (there is an age limit), anyone who finds about 100 minutes of walking on slopes in dim light difficult, and travellers who want to turn up on the night.
Getting there
From Seoul
Take Line 3 to Anguk Station and leave by Exit 3: the palace is about 5 minutes' walk east along Yulgok-ro (allow 5–10 minutes to the gate). The tour gathers at Geumhomun Gate, the side gate west of the main Donhwamun Gate; a booking guide suggests arriving 20–30 minutes before your departure. From Seoul Station, take Line 1 to Jongno 3-ga and change to Line 3 for Anguk, the next station north.
From Busan
KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station, about 2 h 30 min (standard fare ₩54,400 since 1 September 2026), then Line 1 to Jongno 3-ga and Line 3 to Anguk Station, Exit 3.
From Incheon Airport
AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 1 to Jongno 3-ga and Line 3 to Anguk Station, Exit 3.
Last leg from Anguk Station
Seoul Subway Line 3, Exit 3. About 5 minutes to the palace; a 2026 booking guide allows 5–10 minutes to the meeting point
Getting home
In 2026 the last group set off at 20:10 and the walk lasts about 100 minutes, so it finishes well before the last Line 3 trains; Anguk Station is a few minutes' walk from the palace. If you are going on by KTX the same night, check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station before you book the tour.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
Hillside lanes of lived-in hanok houses between Changdeokgung and Gyeongbokgung, where you walk up the alleys for views across the tiled roofs; the best-known stretch is Bukchon-ro 11-gil. Go in the afternoon, not after the tour: since March 2025 tourists may enter the busiest lanes along Bukchon-ro 11-gil only from 10:00 to 17:00, every day, with a ₩100,000 fine outside those hours. Tip: people live in these houses, so keep your voice down and stay off doorsteps.
Getting there: On foot: the lanes start just north of Anguk Station; allow about 10–15 minutes back down to Geumhomun Gate
The UNESCO-listed royal shrine where the spirit tablets of the Joseon kings and queens are kept, centred on Jeongjeon, a very long wooden hall on a stone terrace. Go in the afternoon: open 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:00 (17:30 in June), closed Tuesdays, ₩1,000. On Saturdays and Sundays you walk freely; on Thursdays and Fridays entry is by guided tour only (English 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00). Tip: the 16:00 English tour still leaves time for dinner before the evening walk.
Getting there: Line 3 from Anguk one stop to Jongno 3-ga, Exit 8, then 220 m; or roughly 15 minutes on foot from Geumhomun Gate
The Joseon palace next door to Changdeokgung, built for retired kings and queen dowagers, with the Chundangji pond and Daeonsil, a glass-and-iron greenhouse from 1909, in its northern grounds. It is open until 21:00 (last entry 20:00, closed Mondays, ₩1,000), so you can see it at dusk before the walk; leave in time to be at Geumhomun 20–30 minutes before your group sets off. Tip: head straight to the pond and greenhouse at the far end from Honghwamun Gate, then work back.
Getting there: Roughly 20 minutes on foot east along Yulgok-ro and up Changgyeonggung-ro to Honghwamun Gate, or a short taxi ride
Questions travelers ask
When was the Changdeokgung Moonlight Tour 2026?
There were two 2026 seasons: spring, 16 April–31 May, and autumn, 10 September–17 October, both Thursday to Sunday, with six departures a night from 19:10 to 20:10. Both have ended. No 2027 dates had been announced as of 19 October 2026.
How much does it cost and what is included?
About ₩30,000 per person. That covers a guided night walk of about 100 minutes through the palace and the Secret Garden with a lantern, a daegeum solo at Sangnyangjeong, a royal-stroll re-enactment at Buyongji Pond, and court dance and music at Yeongyeongdang with tea and traditional sweets.
How do I get a ticket?
General sessions are allotted by lottery on Ticketlink about three to four weeks before each season (for autumn 2026, applications 20–26 August), with up to 2 tickets per winner; leftover seats are then sold first come, first served. Foreign visitors book their own sessions on Creatrip, first come, first served.
Can foreign visitors join, and is it in English?
Yes. Foreign-language nights, usually four Sundays a season, are sold on Creatrip: in autumn 2026, 20 and 27 September and 4 and 11 October, with Japanese at 19:10, Chinese at 19:15 and English at 19:20, 20:00, 20:05 and 20:10. General sessions are guided in Korean. Bring your passport, which is checked on the night.
Can children take part?
In 2026 the tour was reported as open to ages 7 and over (born 2019 or earlier), with children 14 and under accompanied by a guardian; in 2025 the reported minimum was 8. Check the current notice before booking.
Where does the tour start?
At Geumhomun Gate, the side gate west of Changdeokgung's main Donhwamun Gate on Yulgok-ro. Anguk Station (Line 3), Exit 3, is about 5 minutes' walk away; arrive 20–30 minutes before your departure time.
Is this the same as the Gyeongbokgung Starlight Tour?
No. The Starlight Tour is a separate night programme at Gyeongbokgung Palace, with a royal-style dinner, run by the same heritage agencies and sold by its own lottery. The Moonlight Tour at Changdeokgung is a lantern walk through the Secret Garden with performances and tea.
When is the next Moonlight Tour?
Not announced as of 19 October 2026. Spring seasons started on 11 April 2024, 10 April 2025 and 16 April 2026, so the next is expected from about mid-April 2027, with the lottery likely in March.

What we could not confirm
- The organizer's own notices on kh.or.kr were not opened; the 2026 details come from news reports of the release, KTO data and booking guides.
- Age limit: a 2026 booking guide gives 7 and over (born 2019 or earlier) with a guardian for 14 and under, while a 2025 report gave 8 and over; the official 2026 wording was not seen.
- Meeting gate: news reports and KTO data put the 2025–2026 entry at Geumhomun, but one booking guide names Donhwamun and the KTO listings themselves are inconsistent; which gate a 2027 season will use is unknown.
- 2027 dates, and whether both a spring and an autumn season will run, were not announced as of 19 October 2026.
- Cancellation and refund rules, rain policy for 2026 (the 5 mm rule is from 2025), wheelchair access and restrooms were not published in the sources opened.
- Simplified Chinese name: only KTO's Traditional Chinese form (昌德宮月光之旅) was found; the Simplified form (probably 昌德宫月光之旅) was not confirmed.
- Creatrip's price for foreign visitors is given as ₩30,000 by a booking guide, while the Creatrip listing shows a euro price (from EUR 20); whether fees apply was not checked.
- Seasons from 2010 to 2023 were not checked, so the total number of seasons is unknown; the sale method for spring 2024 (lottery or first come) was not stated.
- Walking time from Anguk Station Exit 3 comes from an old magazine article and a 2026 booking guide, not an official page.
- No Korean-language KTO TourAPI entry was found (not in the site's listed snapshot); KTO's Japanese (1939441) and Traditional Chinese (1328176) listings were used.
- Opening hours of Changgyeonggung and Jongmyo (and Jongmyo's guided-tour times) come from Visit Seoul pages edited in Sep–Oct 2026; the operator's royal.khs.go.kr and khs.go.kr pages refused automated access and were not read. Walking times from Geumhomun to Jongmyo, Changgyeonggung and Bukchon are estimates.
- Last KTX from Seoul to Busan and other cities on the 2027 tour nights (not published yet)
