What it is like

Busan's city government runs this festival to put the region's intangible heritage in front of the public in one place: the folk songs, masked and ritual dances, farmers' music and crafts that are formally protected and handed down by recognised holders and their schools. It is organised by the Busan Intangible Cultural Heritage Association and held every autumn in Busan Citizens Park, the large park in Busanjin-gu built on the former Hialeah US Army base and opened in 2014. The 2026 edition is the 6th; earlier editions were billed simply as 부산민속예술제 (Busan Folk Arts Festival).

The festival is laid out in three "madang" (yards). Pungnyu Madang is the stage, with the opening ceremony, Busan heritage groups such as Dongnae Jisinbalbi and Suyeong Jisinbalbi, Busan nongak farmers' music, the Dadaepo Hurisori fishing songs and the Saha threshing songs, guest traditions from other regions such as the East Coast Byeolsingut shaman ritual and the Daegu Nalmoe drum dance, tightrope walking, school ensembles and, in 2026, a Philippine traditional dance. Somssi Madang is the hands-on area, where artisans teach embroidery, the potter's wheel, flower shoes, fan decorating, knotwork and drum-making. Janchi Madang has traditional games, a heritage art fair, a hanbok and craft market linked to Hanbok Culture Week, a stamp tour, and hanbok rental with traditional hair accessories.

Entry is free, and the classes booked online for 2026 were free too. In 2025 the city counted about 400 performers and planned for about 5,000 people in the participatory programmes.

The honest caveats: everything is in Korean, the day-by-day stage timetable for 2026 had not been published by 18 October, and the most popular craft classes were booked out in advance. It is still an easy, low-cost way to see Korean folk performance in the middle of Busan, a short walk from the Seomyeon district.

Highlights

  • Busan's own intangible heritage on one stage: Dongnae and Suyeong Jisinbalbi, Busan nongak farmers' music, Dadaepo Hurisori fishing songs and Saha threshing songs
  • Guest traditions from other regions, such as the East Coast Byeolsingut shaman ritual and the Daegu Nalmoe drum dance, plus tightrope walking and, in 2026, a Philippine traditional dance
  • Free craft classes with heritage artisans: embroidery, potter's wheel, scroll painting, flower shoes, fan decorating, knotwork and rattle drums
  • Traditional games such as tuho (arrow-throwing), tug-of-war, hoop rolling and plate spinning, and a palanquin ride
  • Hanbok rental and traditional hair accessories, a Hanbok Culture Week craft market and the Busan Intangible Heritage Art Fair
  • A children's "royal civil-service exam" on Saturday 24 October 2026, 12:30–13:30, with prizes for the top scholars

Who it suits. Travellers curious about Korean folk performance and crafts, families with children (games, crafts and the children's exam), and anyone staying around Seomyeon that weekend; less suited to visitors who need English explanations, as the programme is entirely in Korean.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station, about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger). Then take Busan Metro Line 1 seven stops north to Bujeon Station, the stop after Seomyeon, and leave by Exit 5 or 7; Busan city puts the walk to the park at about 5–10 minutes. Dasom Square is inside the park.

From Busan

Busan Metro Line 1 to Bujeon Station, Exit 5 or 7, then about 5–10 minutes on foot to the park. Seomyeon, where Lines 1 and 2 meet, is the stop before Bujeon (0.6 km). Donghae Line trains stop at the separate Korail Bujeon Station; use its Exit 2. Alternatively, take Line 1 to Yangjeong Station, Exit 5, walk about 100 m and catch bus 63 or 179 to the Busan Citizens Park stop.

From Incheon Airport

Domestic flight from Incheon to Gimhae (Busan). Airport bus Line 2 (Seomyeon·Bujeon) runs every 60 minutes from the airport, adults ₩7,500, card or transit card only; check the first and last departures at the airport bus stop. Or take the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail three stops to Sasang, Metro Line 2 to Seomyeon and Line 1 one stop to Bujeon (about an hour from the airport to the city centre). Or AREX to Seoul Station, the KTX to Busan Station and Line 1 to Bujeon.

Last leg from Bujeon Station

Busan Metro Line 1 (Korail Donghae Line station alongside), Exit 5 or 7 (Line 1); Exit 2 (Donghae Line). About 5–10 minutes to the park (Busan city), then on to Dasom Square inside the park; Busan Concert Hall, beside the park in Yeonji-dong, gives about 22 minutes from Line 1 Exit 7

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was announced. City buses 63 and 179 run from near Yangjeong Station Exit 5 (Line 1) to the Busan Citizens Park stop.

Getting home

The festival closes at 17:00, so a same-day return to Seoul is easy: KTX trains from Busan Station to Seoul Station (about 2 h 30 m) run into the late evening. Check the last train for your date in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station before you go. Busan Station is seven stops south of Bujeon on Line 1.

Parking

No festival parking information was published, and the park's car park capacity and fees were not checked. Busan Concert Hall, beside the park, warns that parking in the area is limited and asks visitors to come by public transport.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Bujeon Market (부전시장)Before or after

One of Busan's big traditional markets, part of the Bujeon Market Town complex: wholesale and retail lanes of seafood, meat, dried goods, fruit, vegetables, clothing and household goods. It sits by Bujeon Station, the festival's metro stop, so walk through it on the way in or out. KTO gives 07:00–19:00, but hours and closing days vary by shop, so expect some shutters on Sunday. Exit 1 is the market side; Exits 5 and 7 are the ones for the park.

Getting there: By Bujeon Station on Line 1 (Exit 1), the metro stop for the festival; on foot, no fare

  • Busan Citizens Park History Museum (부산시민공원역사관)Before or after

A small museum in the park on the history of its ground: the Japanese colonial period, the decades as Camp Hialeah, the US Army base, the lives of the residents around it, and the return of the land that became the park, shown in former base buildings. Busan city lists it open from 3 October to 1 November 2026 between exhibition changes; a listing gives 09:00–18:00, closed Mondays, free, which covers the festival's 11:00–17:00 on both days. Allow about an hour.

Getting there: Inside Busan Citizens Park, on foot from Dasom Square; free (listing)

  • UN Peace Festival (UN평화축제)After

Busan's free festival for UN Day in Peace Park, beside the UN Memorial Cemetery in Nam-gu: world-culture booths, food, stage shows and a peace parade remembering the UN forces of the Korean War, held 23–25 October 2026, 10:30–21:00 (KTO). It runs four hours past this festival's 17:00 close, so it is the natural evening move; the cemetery itself shuts at 17:00 from October. Going back to Seoul the same night, leave early: Daeyeon to Busan Station is Line 2 to Seomyeon, then Line 1.

Getting there: Line 1 one stop to Seomyeon, Line 2 east six stops to Daeyeon, Exit 3, then about 15 minutes on foot; free

  • Gwangalli M Drone Light Show (광안리 M 드론 라이트쇼)After

A free show of about 1,000 drones over Gwangalli Beach, with Gwangan Bridge behind it, run by Suyeong-gu every Saturday; each show lasts under 12 minutes. Saturday 24 October 2026 only, not Sunday: shows at 19:00 and 21:00 (the October–February times), titled 'Melody of the Forest' that night, so the 19:00 show is easy after the 17:00 close. Shows can be cancelled or delayed on the day for rain, wind or signal problems; check Suyeong-gu's notice before you go.

Getting there: Line 1 to Seomyeon, Line 2 east ten stops to Gwangan, Exit 3, then about 10 minutes on foot to the beach; free

What we could not confirm

  • The 2026 stage timetable and opening-ceremony time were not published as of 19 October 2026 (KTO listing modified 12 Oct and ministry listing rechecked; the opening was at 13:30 in 2024 and 2025).
  • First year: a 5th edition in 2025 and a 6th in 2026, with editions every October since 2023, imply a first festival in 2021, but no source stating the first year or the 2021–2022 editions was found; firstHeld is left null.
  • The festival's own site (busanfolkartfestival.com) was not opened because no search returned it; the 2026 programme rests on KTO data, the ministry listing and the Event-us sign-up pages.
  • No Japanese name was found (no KTO or Busan city Japanese listing for this festival); the Chinese names come from Busan city's Chinese event pages for 2024 and 2025.
  • Station exits: Busan city gives Line 1 Exits 5 or 7 (Donghae Line Exit 2) and 5–10 minutes to the park, while itwiki lists Exit 2 of the Line 1 station for the park. The walking time to Dasom Square itself was not published.
  • Fees for hanbok rental, hair accessories and other on-site booths, and whether walk-ins can join the pre-booked classes, were not published; whether Event-us sign-up works without a Korean phone number was not stated.
  • The Line 1 ride time from Busan Station to Bujeon was not checked, so the trip time covers only the KTX and the walk.
  • Last KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station on 24–25 October 2026 under the Korail timetable in force: the earlier clock times came from a third-party timetable mirror and were removed on 22 October 2026. The rail fare is from the Korail fare table effective 1 Sep 2026.
  • Parking, rain policy, accessibility, restrooms, pets and foreign-card acceptance were not published.
  • Airport bus Line 2 first and last departures for October 2026: the 07:00–22:00 span came from Busan city's July 2025 notice and was removed until a current timetable is checked.
  • Busan Citizens Park History Museum: the 09:00–18:00 hours, Monday closing and free entry come from a 2024 listing, not the museum's own page; Busan city's notice confirms only that it is open 3 Oct–1 Nov 2026.
  • Bujeon Market: which shops are closed on Sunday 25 October (KTO says closing days vary by shop).
  • Metro ride times from Bujeon to Daeyeon (UN Peace Festival) and to Gwangan (drone show) were not checked; only the stops and walks are given.
