What it is like

Nam-gu, the Busan district that is home to the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea, holds this festival every October in Peace Park, the open green space beside the cemetery in Daeyeon-dong. The cemetery was set up by the UN Command in January 1951 and is the only one of its kind in the world: about 2,300 UN soldiers from 11 countries who died in the Korean War are buried there. The festival turns that history into a public weekend about remembrance and peace, and the district presents it as the flagship event of its UN Peace Culture Special Zone. The 2026 edition is the 28th.

For 2026 the theme is "Pieces Make Peace" (peace built from many pieces), under the slogan 열린 기억, 열린 미래 ("open memory, open future"). KTO lists six theme zones (Memory, Participation, Performance, Connection, Healing Food and Future) with exhibitions, stage shows, world-culture experiences and hands-on booths, plus a peace parade of residents of different ages and nationalities. On the Friday afternoon a free talk session, the Open Peace Forum, is held in the auditorium of the Busan Museum, on the same road as the cemetery.

Recent editions show what to expect. In 2025 the parade set off at 14:30 on the Saturday from the junction by the cemetery to the main stage, with military bands, youth groups and international students, and an evening peace concert followed. Both days had world-culture zones, a talent contest for foreign residents, a UN peace quiz, a Korean history exam for foreigners, a Korean War food tasting, food trucks and a flea market. The festival also falls at the start of Busan's UN Weeks (24 October to 11 November), which open with the official UN Day ceremony at the cemetery (11:00 in 2024 and 2025) and close on 11 November with Turn Toward Busan, a minute of silence for the war dead.

The honest caveats: this is a district festival aimed mainly at residents and run almost entirely in Korean; the 2026 day-by-day timetable, including the parade time, had not been published by 19 October; and the cemetery closes at 17:00 in October, hours before the festival does. Paired with a walk through the cemetery and a visit to the UN Peace Memorial Hall nearby, it still makes a meaningful half day in Busan.

Highlights

  • Set beside the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea, the only UN cemetery in the world, where about 2,300 soldiers from 11 countries who died in the Korean War are buried; entry to both is free
  • 2026 theme "Pieces Make Peace" with six zones: Memory, Participation, Performance, Connection, Healing Food and Future
  • A peace parade of residents of different generations and nationalities; in 2025 it left the cemetery junction at 14:30 on the Saturday, with military bands, youth groups and international students
  • Open Peace Forum talks on Friday 23 October 2026, 15:00–19:00, in the Busan Museum auditorium; free, with online sign-up until 22 October
  • Programmes built for foreign residents in recent years: a talent contest, a UN peace quiz and a Korean history exam for foreigners (2025)
  • Korean War food tasting, world food trucks, a flea market and evening concerts on the main stage
  • Saturday 24 October 2026 is UN Day, the opening of Busan's UN Weeks, which run to 11 November

Who it suits. Travellers interested in the Korean War and the UN's part in it, families after a free weekend outing with food and shows, and international residents, for whom several programmes are designed; less suited to anyone expecting a large-scale spectacle or programmes in English.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station, about 2 h 30 m (₩54,400 standard class on the fare table in force since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger). From Busan Station take Busan Metro Line 1 to Seomyeon, change to Line 2 towards Jangsan and ride east to Daeyeon Station. Leave by Exit 3 and walk about 15 minutes to the UN Memorial Cemetery; Peace Park is next to it.

From Busan

Busan Metro Line 2 to Daeyeon Station, Exit 3, then about 15 minutes on foot to the UN Memorial Cemetery (Busan city, Busan Navi; a 2026 travel article puts it at about 18 minutes), with Peace Park beside it. Kyungsung Univ.·Pukyong Nat'l Univ. Station, also on Line 2, is the alternative: a 2012 visitor guide gives 15–20 minutes from its Exit 5. From Busan Station or Nampo, take Line 1 to Seomyeon and change to Line 2.

From Incheon Airport

Domestic flight to Gimhae Airport, then the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail to Sasang and Busan Metro Line 2 east to Daeyeon Station; or AREX to Seoul Station and the KTX to Busan Station.

Last leg from Daeyeon Station

Busan Metro Line 2, Exit 3. About 15 minutes to the UN Memorial Cemetery (Busan city); Peace Park adjoins the cemetery

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was announced for 2026.

Getting home

The festival closes at 21:00 (KTO). The last KTX trains from Busan Station to Seoul Station leave in the late evening, and from Daeyeon, Busan Station is reached on Line 2 to Seomyeon and then Line 1 (ride time not checked), so staying to the close and catching the last KTX is tight. The last-train times for 24–25 October 2026 were not checked against Korail's timetable: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the station, leave earlier if you must be back in Seoul the same night, and book the return in advance.

Parking

No festival parking information was published. The UN Memorial Cemetery car park gives cars 1 hour 30 minutes free, then ₩500 for the first 30 minutes and ₩200 per 10 minutes (travel article, April 2026); the free Busan Museum car park (about 50 spaces) is the usual overflow on busy days. Both are likely to fill during the festival, so take the metro.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

The world's only UN war cemetery, set up by the UN Command in January 1951: about 2,300 soldiers from 11 countries lie in national plots, with a memorial hall and the UN war memorial. It closes at 17:00 from October to April (opens 09:00, free), hours before the festival's 21:00 close, so go first and cross into Peace Park afterwards. Saturday 24 October is UN Day, when the city holds its ceremony there (11:00 in 2024 and 2025); a 2012 guide says sandals were turned away at the gate.

Free, 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed Mondays: an easy hour next to the festival grounds. Its auditorium hosts the Open Peace Forum on Friday 23 October (15:00–19:00; sign-up closed on 22 October).

Getting there: On UN Pyeonghwa-ro beside the cemetery, on foot; free

  • Gwangalli M Drone Light Show (광안리 M 드론 라이트쇼)After

The 21:00 show is the one to catch after the festival: leave Peace Park by about 20:15, allowing for the 15-minute walk to Daeyeon Station. Skip it if you are going back to Seoul the same night.

  • Cemetery hours agree across KTO, Busan city and a 2026 article (09:00–17:00 October–April), but Busan Navi gives different month ranges; the closed-shoes rule comes from a 2012 visitor guide; the cemetery's own site (unmck.or.kr) was not opened.
  • Two Metro Seoul articles (2013 and 2024) returned by search could not be opened (server error); they might have confirmed the edition count and the 2024 programme.
  • Festival parking, rain policy, accessibility, pets, foreign-card acceptance and attendance figures were not published.
  • Nam-gu's 2026 day-by-day programme (parade, opening ceremony, concert times) was still not found by search on 22 October 2026; the KTO-based listings and city pages returned covered only the 2025 edition.
  • Last KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station on 24–25 October 2026 under the Korail timetable in force that day (Korail's own pages were not read; the earlier times from a third-party mirror were removed on 22 October 2026). The metro ride time from Daeyeon to Busan Station was not checked either.
  • UN Peace Memorial Hall hours: KTO data and NOL World give 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30), a third-party listing 09:00–18:00; the hall's own site (unpm.or.kr) was not opened, and the walking route and time from Peace Park were not published.
  • Busan Museum hours and the hanbok room come from Busan Navi (undated); museum.busan.go.kr was not opened, and the later Saturday hours (to 20:00) Busan Navi lists were not confirmed.
