What it is like

Andong is the home of Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori, a village mask play on UNESCO's intangible-heritage list, and this festival builds on that: for eleven days, Korea's 17 heritage-listed mask-dance troupes perform alongside foreign companies (27 teams from 23 countries in 2026, with Malaysia as guest country). The main site is the disused 1942 Andong railway station in the city centre, now called Jungang Line 1942 Andong Station, with a main stage, an indoor mask-dance theatre, food stalls and a mask-making workshop; Mask Dance Park nearby hosts a busking stage where visitors learn basic steps. Evening is the best time: a Global Mask Parade runs from the old downtown to the festival grounds on four dates, followed at 19:00 by Daedong Nanjang, a mass dance in which the audience joins the performers. On three nights the programme moves to Hahoe Village (festival shuttle from the grounds) for Seonyu Julbul Nori, a night fire display strung across the Nakdong River between the Mansongjeong pine grove and Buyongdae cliff. Honest caveats: the daytime schedule is mostly stage shows with Korean-only announcements, the old-downtown parades are crowded on the two weekends, and the festival shuttle to Hahoe stops around 17:00 on weekdays. Andong's new KTX station is on the edge of town, not at the festival site, so allow for a bus, shuttle or taxi transfer.

Highlights

  • Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori and 16 other heritage-listed Korean mask-dance troupes on the main stage
  • Global Mask Parade from the old downtown to the grounds on 26, 27 and 30 September and 3 October 2026, followed by Daedong Nanjang audience dancing at 19:00
  • Seonyu Julbul Nori fire-string display over the Nakdong River at Hahoe Village (26 September and 3 October at 19:00, 4 October at 18:30 in 2026)
  • World Mask Play Competition finals and closing ceremony on the last day
  • Mask-making workshop (Mask Atelier) and learn-a-mask-dance sessions at Mask Dance Park
  • Market parade linking the old and new traditional markets

Who it suits. Best for travellers interested in Korean performing arts and anyone combining Andong with Hahoe Village; good for families because the grounds are free and the workshops are hands-on. Less suited to visitors who want English commentary, since stage announcements are in Korean and interpretation for individual workshops is not provided.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni Station to Andong Station (about 1 h 50 m–2 h 05 m, ₩27,700 standard class, 13 trains a day in October 2026). Andong Station is on the edge of town next to Andong Bus Terminal, not at the festival site: take the festival shuttle (departs the station/terminal at :30 past the hour), city bus 110, 112 or circular route 3 to the 탈춤공원건너/탈춤공원앞 stops (about 190 m from the grounds), or a taxi.

From Busan

Intercity bus from Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo) to Andong Terminal, 4 a day in October 2026, about 2 h 08 m, ₩22,900 deluxe class; then the festival shuttle or a city bus as above.

Last leg from Andong Station

Jungang Line (KTX-Eum, ITX). Not within walking distance; the station moved to Songhyeon-dong beside the bus terminal in December 2020. Use the festival shuttle (:30 past the hour), bus 110/112/circular 3, or a taxi.

Festival shuttle

2026: free shuttles linked the grounds, Andong Bus Terminal/Andong Station and Hahoe Village ticket office. Grounds→Hahoe on the hour from 10:00 (last 17:00 weekdays, 20:00 weekends/holidays, no departures 12:00–12:59 and 18:00–18:59); Hahoe→Andong Station→grounds with Hahoe departures on the hour and station departures at :30 (last about 17:30 weekdays, 21:30 holidays). Separate timetable and boarding point on the Seonyu Julbul Nori nights (26 Sep, 3 and 4 Oct).

Getting home

Last trains from Andong Station to Cheongnyangni and Seoul Station, and last express buses from Andong Bus Terminal (next to the station) to Dong Seoul and Seoul Express Bus Terminal, for the 2027 festival dates were not checked; check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) and the last bus at the terminal before the festival day. In October 2026 the last express buses to Seoul left later than the last trains. The night program runs to 22:00, so a same-day return means leaving the grounds well before the end.

Parking

2026: 14 official lots with 3,512 spaces, including free riverside lots at the Arts Centre (576), Mask Dance Park (96) and under Cheonri bridge (114), plus 1,246 paid downtown spaces (Ungbu Park, City Hall annex, old and new markets). Downtown road closures ran 16 Sep–7 Oct.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Hahoe Folk Village (하회마을)Before

A UNESCO-listed clan village where the Pungsan Ryu family has lived for about 600 years: tile-roofed and thatched houses inside a loop of the Nakdong River, and the home of the Hahoe mask dance the festival grew from. Go in the morning: last entry is 16:30 from October (17:30 in September; opens 09:00, adult ₩5,000), so the evening shuttles arrive too late. The free Byeolsingut mask dance plays at 14:00 Tue–Sun (not confirmed for festival days); the return shuttle runs via Andong Station.

Getting there: Free festival shuttle from the grounds to the Hahoe ticket office, hourly in 2026; or city bus 210, Express 2 or Pungcheon 2. Check before you go

  • Woryeonggyo Bridge (월영교)Before

Korea's longest wooden footbridge (387 m), across the Nakdong River near Andong Dam and lit up at night. Spend an afternoon there before the evening programme: the Woryeong Train, opened in September 2026 on the old Jungang Line, links Imcheonggak with the Waryong Light Tunnel above the bridge (last trip 16:30, ₩3,000 return; closed Mondays), and Andong City Museum beside the bridge is free (last entry 17:30).

Getting there: City bus 112 or 3, which also serve the Mask Dance Park stops, or a short taxi ride; check the route in Kakao Map before you go

  • Andong Old Market (안동구시장)Before or after

The old-town market where Andong jjimdak is said to have begun: chicken braised with glass noodles and vegetables in a soy-based sauce, served on sharing platters along a whole alley of restaurants. Go for a late lunch or early dinner (the market runs 09:00–22:00; closing days vary by restaurant). Queues were long on festival weekends in 2026, so eat by about 17:30 to be back for the 19:00 Daedong Nanjang. Andong Station is about 20 minutes away by bus; allow for that if you leave by train.

Getting there: On foot through the old downtown; the market is on the festival's market-parade route
