What it is like
Yeongdong is a mountain-ringed county on the Gyeongbu railway between Daejeon and Gimcheon, and its big swing between hot days and cool nights, plus long hours of sun, make it one of Korea's main grape and fruit-wine areas. The grape festival is the growers' late-summer showcase: four days, Thursday to Sunday, timed for the Campbell Early and Shine Muscat harvest. Since at least 2023 it has used the Rainbow Healing Tourist Site on the edge of Yeongdong-eup, a plaza built for the county's big festivals, with an arts centre, the Rainbow Healing Center, the Fruit Kingdom Theme Park and the Yeongdong Wine Tunnel around it. In 2025 the festival shifted to mid-September and to the theme-park side of the complex because the Yeongdong World Gugak Expo occupied the plaza; it returned in 2026. The core is hands-on and simple: stomping grapes in a tub (₩2,000 a session in 2026), picking your own bunches at a vineyard outside town, and buying fruit by the box from township growers' tents at below-market prices. In 2024 the county counted about 238,000 visitors and ₩2.52 billion of sales, ₩1.46 billion of it grapes. Around that sit a grape health experience hall (grapeseed-oil massage, grape face masks, wine foot baths), an indoor children's playground (in 2026 inside the dome left over from the Gugak Expo), children's musicals, local wine booths, food zones, an opening night with fireworks and evening concerts by trot and pop singers. Honest caveats: late August is hot and much of the site is open plaza; the picking vineyard is a separate site about 4–5 km from the main venue and stops when the day's fruit runs out; stage shows and sign-ups are in Korean; and the last direct train to Seoul may leave before the Friday and Saturday concerts end, so check it in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) before the festival day.
Highlights
- Grape stomping at the Healing Plaza: five sessions a day, ₩2,000 per person in 2026, on-site sign-up
- Pick-your-own grapes at a partner vineyard about 4–5 km from the plaza: planned at ₩10,000 per 2 kg in 2026, 10:00–18:00, first come until the day's fruit runs out
- Growers' sales tents with Campbell Early, Shine Muscat, peaches and plums; in 2026 a visitor found Shine Muscat at ₩13,000 for 2 kg and Campbell Early at ₩10,000–14,000 for 3 kg
- Grape health experience hall with grapeseed-oil massage, grape face masks and wine foot baths (new in 2024)
- Yeongdong wine tasting and sales booths (500 mL bottles about ₩10,000–15,000 in 2026), with the Yeongdong Wine Tunnel about 0.5–1 km away
- Evening concerts in 2026: Purple Wave on Friday 28 Aug (19:00–21:00) and Purple Night on Saturday 29 Aug (19:30–21:30), with fireworks on opening night
- Indoor children's playground and rest area in the Gugak Expo dome, children's musicals, and snack-brand zones (a Crown Haitai character zone and a Maeil Dairies grape drink in 2026)
Who it suits. Best for families and food lovers who want a hands-on harvest day (stomping, picking and buying grapes by the box) and for wine-curious travellers who can add the nearby Wine Tunnel; the daytime programme works as a day trip by train from Seoul. Less suited to anyone who struggles with heat and crowds, needs English-language programmes, or wants the evening concerts without staying overnight.
Getting there
From Seoul
Direct Gyeongbu Line trains run from Seoul Station to Yeongdong Station: 15 a day in October 2026, about 2 h 20 m by ITX-Saemaeul or ITX-Maeum (2 h 17 m–2 h 36 m, ₩20,400 standard) or 2 h 28 m–2 h 57 m by Mugunghwa (₩13,700). KTX does not stop at Yeongdong. In 2026 a third-party guide reported a free circulating shuttle from the station plaza to the festival plaza (not confirmed in county or news sources); otherwise take a taxi.
From Busan
Yeongdong Station is on the Gyeongbu Line, so northbound ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains from Busan Station are the direct option; times and fares from Busan were not checked for this record.
Last leg from Yeongdong Station
Korail Gyeongbu Line (ITX-Saemaeul, ITX-Maeum, Mugunghwa; no KTX). Use the festival shuttle from the station plaza if it runs (reported for 2026 by a third-party guide) or a taxi to 117 Yeongdong Healing-ro; walking route and time not verified.
Festival shuttle
2026: a third-party guide reported a free circulating shuttle between the Yeongdong Station plaza and the festival plaza (frequency not published). News reports confirm more circulating shuttles and expanded parking after the 2025 edition, and a visitor reported extra circulating buses between the car parks and the venue and a free shuttle taxi for visitors from outside the county. The same guide describes a free delivery and pick-up zone for fruit bought on site. In 2024 seven electric circulating buses ran.
Getting home
Last direct trains from Yeongdong to Seoul Station for the 2027 festival dates were not checked; check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at Yeongdong Station before the festival day. Daytime programmes end at 18:00. The Friday and Saturday concerts ran to 21:00 and 21:30 in 2026, so for a concert night consider staying overnight.
Parking
2026 car parks (list from a third-party guide): Yeongdong Sports Park (Yeongdonghwanggan-ro 154), Yeongdong Gymnasium (Yeongdonghwanggan-ro 122), the County Stadium (Yeongdonghwanggan-ro 123), the lot beside the public health centre (Maecheon-ri 447) and the Eoseosil lot (Seongji-gil 10), with circulating buses to the venue; a visitor reported that cars were not allowed inside the tourist site. Parking was expanded for 2026 after feedback on the 2025 edition (iNews24). Outside festival days the Rainbow Healing Center has 150 spaces.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm
- The official festival site (ydgrape.co.kr) could not be opened, so the 2026 station shuttle, the car-park list, the delivery zone, the grape-picking price, place and hours, the food-zone and wine-sales hours and the concert times rest on a third-party guide (infoarounds) and a visitor blog; news reports confirm only more shuttles and expanded parking in general terms.
- First year not confirmed: 2024 was the 19th edition and 2026 the 21st, and a grape festival existed by 2006 (combined that year with the Nangye Gugak Festival), but whether the first was in 2004, 2005 or 2006 and which COVID-era years were skipped was not found, so firstHeld is null.
- No 2025 closing report and no 2026 visitor or sales total were found; the 2025 dates come from the county's pre-festival announcement.
- KTO's Japanese and Chinese names and a KTO contentId for the festival were not found (it is not in the site's listed.json snapshot); names.ja, zhHans and zhHant are null.
- Walking route and taxi time from Yeongdong Station to the venue were not verified.
- Address detail: KTO data gives 영동힐링로 117 for the tourist site (used here); a visitor blog gives 영동힐링로 248, and the Rainbow Healing Center is at 95.
- Train times from Busan, and later connections via Daejeon, were not checked; the Seoul ↔ Yeongdong journey times are from a third-party mirror (21–27 Oct 2026), and Korail's own search could not be read.
- The search budget ran out before the county's (yd21.go.kr) notices and a KTO English festival listing could be checked.
- Not re-checked in the 21 Oct 2026 audit: the KTO Rainbow Healing Center page (150 parking spaces), the Wikitree report, the Korea Wine Festival sources (Foodtoday, Stars and Stripes), the Korail pages, and the dates given for the Muju, Geumsan and Gimcheon festivals in "nearby".
- Last direct train back from Yeongdong to Seoul Station on the 2027 festival dates under the timetable in force that day.
Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-20 — Wine Tunnel is about 0.5–1 km from the site, not next door. · 2026-10-21 — Corrected after an independent fact audit: the 2026 station shuttle, car-park list and grape-picking details are now attributed to the third-party guide they rest on; last trains checked against the October 2026 timetable; 2023 programme corrected (one children's musical and a ballet show, about 20 healing experiences). · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed first and last train clock times from the October 2026 timetable (a new KTX timetable started on 1 Nov 2026); visitors are told to check the Korail app or Yeongdong Station before the festival day.
