What it is like

Muju's firefly habitat is a designated natural monument, and since 1997 the county has run a festival around it. The core experience is the Firefly Mystery Exploration (반딧불이 신비탐사): at 18:40 you gather at the Bandi exploration zone (1170 Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup), ride a bus to a habitat and spend until 21:00 watching late-season fireflies glow in the dark. It costs ₩20,000, is booked online only at firefly.or.kr on a first-come basis, sells out fast, and in 2026 ran 15 times between 4 and 20 September (not on the 14th and 15th). Participants get a ₩10,000 Muju gift voucher back on the day; long trousers and trainers are required, LED shoes, pets and wheelchairs are not allowed, and bad weather cancels a run. The rest of the festival is free and spread along the Namdaecheon stream in Muju-eup: a firefly theme hall (five times larger in 2026, 22 insect species), a kids' zone, a water-splash day, taekwondo displays, a global parade, a 400-drone light show, and Anseong Nakhwanori, a traditional fire display in which natural materials, not gunpowder, are hung on a line over the river and burned so sparks fall like a waterfall. Honest caveats: this is a small rural town, the main stage mixes pop, indie and 1990s dance acts aimed at Korean families, the firefly tour is in Korean (a foreigner-only tour bus was added in 2026), and getting here without a car means a 2 h 26 m bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal with only four departures a day, so stay overnight.

Highlights

  • Firefly Mystery Exploration: guided night visit to a firefly habitat, 18:40–21:00, ₩20,000, 15 runs between 4 and 20 September 2026, online booking only
  • Anseong Nakhwanori: gunpowder-free 'falling flower' fire display over the Namdaecheon stream (Muju bridge closed 21:30–23:00 on 4, 5 and 12 September 2026)
  • Drone light show with more than 400 drones, laser and fountain shows on the stream
  • Firefly theme hall with live fireflies and 22 insect species, so children can see them by day
  • Kakao T festival shuttle from 21 stops in 13 areas nationwide, including Seoul (Gangnam, Sadang, Seoul Station, Jamsil, Hapjeong), Daejeon and Jeonju, on 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12 September 2026
  • Closing-night concert (2026: Roo'ra, Kim Won-jun, Space A, R.ef) and 30th-anniversary eve festival

Who it suits. Best for families with children and for travellers who want a rural, nature-based night experience and can stay overnight in Muju or combine it with Deogyusan National Park. Less suited to day-trippers from Seoul (the last public buses leave before the fireflies appear), people with limited mobility (wheelchairs are not allowed on the firefly tour) or anyone who has not booked the tour in advance.

Getting there

From Seoul

Intercity bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Muju Public Bus Terminal, 4 a day (07:40, 10:05, 14:35, 17:05), 2 h 26 m, ₩23,800 deluxe class; the festival grounds along the Namdaecheon are a short walk or local bus 78 ride from the terminal (stops at 예체문화관, 64 m from the festival office). Faster by rail: KTX Seoul–Daejeon (about 1 h, ₩21,600) then bus from Daejeon Bokhap Terminal to Muju (18 a day, 07:10–21:00, 46 min, about ₩5,500–6,000). On festival weekends the Kakao T shuttle runs from five Seoul stops direct to Jinam Park.

From Busan

No direct bus found; KTX to Daejeon and the Daejeon–Muju bus (46 min) is the practical route, or the Kakao T festival shuttle from Busan Dongnae or Seomyeon stations on shuttle days.

Last leg from No railway in Muju; nearest rail is Daejeon Station (KTX), then the Daejeon Bokhap Terminal–Muju bus

KTX Gyeongbu Line via Daejeon; bus from Daejeon Bokhap Terminal to Muju Public Bus Terminal. Muju Public Bus Terminal is in Muju-eup; local bus 78 stops at 예체문화관 (64 m) and 무주청소년수련관 (58 m) beside the festival office.

Festival shuttle

2026: Kakao T app-only festival shuttle on 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12 September from 21 stops nationwide (Seoul Gangnam, Sadang, Seoul Station, Jamsil, Hapjeong; Seongnam Migeum, Suwon Yeongtong, Incheon Bupyeong; Daejeon Bokhap Terminal and City Hall; Daegu Banwoldang and Yongsan; Busan Dongnae and Seomyeon; Gwangju Sangmu Station and the bus terminal; Suncheon, Yeosu, Iksan, Gunsan, Jeonju World Cup Stadium) to Jinam Park P2 car park, round trip or one way. Free local shuttles (9 buses, every 20 minutes) on weekends between the 2nd Agro-Industrial Complex and Eco Adventure Park temporary lots and the Traditional Life Culture Centre. Separate buses carry firefly-tour participants from the exploration zone to the habitat.

Getting home

Only four buses a day run between Seoul Nambu Terminal and Muju and the firefly tour ends at 21:00, so a same-night return to Seoul by public transport is not realistic; stay in Muju-eup or book the round-trip Kakao T shuttle. Buses between Daejeon and Muju run until 21:00 in the Daejeon→Muju direction.

Parking

28 car parks (public lots, private sites and temporary lots) with 3,236 spaces in 2026; the Banditbul Market lot is free; real-time occupancy posted on the county website and social media. Muju bridge was closed 21:30–23:00 on 4, 5 and 12 September.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
