What it is like
Minam (味南) means 'taste of the south', and this is Haenam County's yearly showcase of what its farms and coast produce. It has been held since 2019 in Duryunsan Provincial Park in Samsan-myeon, on the lawn ground along the same road that climbs to Daeheungsa Temple, and Jeollanam-do has picked it as one of its ten representative festivals five years running, most recently for 2026.
The format is three days of eating and cooking. In 2025 each of Haenam's 14 towns and townships brought its produce to an opening parade, the county presented its 'Haenam 8 flavours' (해남8미), a set of signature dishes, at a themed table hall, and the theme was kim (laver): a kim pavilion explained how it is made, visitors rolled their own kimbap at a pop-up, and the local fisheries cooperative sold kim at half price. For 2026 the theme is Haenam rice, with a theme pavilion (exhibition, hands-on activities, sales and an online broadcast), a rice-cooking experience and a Haenam cabbage bibimbap event; the county has dropped the opening ceremony, the township parade and the VIP seats, so all seating is open to everyone. Recent editions have also had the 515 Kimchi Mixing, a mass kimchi-tossing session named after the county's 515 villages, a food hall of local restaurants, a snack hall, free bowls of rice-cake soup, rice cakes grilled over firewood and a makgeolli cocktail stand; in 2026 the food and snack halls are run by local businesses and township residents, beside large sales booths for local farm and fisheries produce. The opening day has a trot show (in 2026 after a rice-themed performance) and there is an evening concert; in 2025 chrysanthemum displays, a light tunnel and night lighting zones decorated the park.
The festival grew up during the pandemic: the 2020 edition was mostly online and the 2021 edition was hybrid, with booked, vaccinated-only entry. In 2022 it was postponed by a week after the Itaewon crowd crush and held without its concerts. Visitor numbers rose from about 165,000 in 2022 to about 243,000 in 2025.
The honest caveats: Haenam is far from Seoul (about four and a half hours by direct bus), the last direct bus back leaves in the late afternoon, and the park is another 20 minutes by local bus from Haenam's terminal, so most visitors from Seoul should plan to stay the night. Programs are run in Korean and no English support is documented. Entry was free in 2025 (2026 prices have not been published), but you paid for food and some workshops. Pair the visit with Daeheungsa, a UNESCO-listed mountain monastery just up the road; in 2022 the Duryunsan leaves were expected to peak around the second weekend of November.
Highlights
- Food halls built on Haenam produce: the Haenam Bapsang table of the county's '8 flavours', a Minam Food Hall of local restaurants and a snack hall (2025); in 2026 the food and snack halls are run by local businesses and township residents
- 515 Kimchi Mixing, a mass kimchi-tossing session named after Haenam's 515 villages, with 250 participants in 2025
- Theme pavilion for the year's product: Haenam rice in 2026 (exhibition, hands-on activities, sales and an online broadcast, plus a rice-cooking experience and a Haenam cabbage bibimbap event); kim (laver) in 2025, with a make-your-own kimbap pop-up and a half-price kim sale by the Haenam fisheries cooperative
- Free kim rice-cake soup, rice cakes grilled over firewood and a makgeolli cocktail pavilion (2025)
- A rice-themed opening performance and the Minam Trot celebration show (Kim Yong-bin, Hong Ji-yoon) on Friday 30 October 2026, and the Minam romantic concert (Sungri, Jadoo) on Saturday 31 October; no opening ceremony, township parade or VIP seating this year
- Chrysanthemum displays, a light tunnel and night lighting zones in Duryunsan Provincial Park, on the road to UNESCO-listed Daeheungsa Temple
Who it suits. Best for food-focused travelers who want to taste south-western Korean country cooking (kimchi, kim, sweet potatoes, rice cakes, makgeolli) in one place, and for anyone spending an autumn weekend in Haenam with Daeheungsa Temple; less suited to a day trip from Seoul (about 4.5 hours each way, with only a few direct buses a day) or to visitors who need English-language programs.
Getting there
From Seoul
Direct express buses link Seoul Central City Terminal (Honam Line) and Haenam Bus Terminal in about 4 h 26 m (₩46,200 deluxe, ₩59,800 premium; about five a day from Haenam back to Seoul); Dong Seoul Terminal also has a 5 h 16 m service (₩47,000). By rail, take the KTX from Yongsan to Gwangju Songjeong (about 2 h, ₩42,000 standard), cross Gwangju to U-Square bus terminal, and take a bus to Haenam (1 h 24 m–1 h 48 m, ₩15,000–21,600). From Haenam terminal the local bus to Daeheungsa runs about every 30 minutes and takes about 20 minutes to Duryunsan Provincial Park, where the festival is held.
From Busan
Intercity buses run between Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal and Haenam a few times a day: about 3 h 28 m on the premium service (₩49,400) or 4 h 45 m on the regular one (₩34,800); check departure times at the terminal before you travel. Then take the 20-minute Daeheungsa bus to the park.
From Incheon Airport
Since 1 October 2026 Kumho Express runs one direct bus a day each way between Incheon Airport and Haenam: a morning departure from the airport (Terminal 2, then Terminal 1) that reaches Haenam around midday, and an overnight bus back that leaves Haenam just after midnight and reaches the airport before dawn. The departure times were reported in the news but not confirmed from Kumho Express's own timetable, so check them at the airport bus counter or Haenam terminal before you rely on them.
Last leg from Gwangju Songjeong Station (KTX), then bus via Gwangju U-Square
Korail Honam high-speed line (KTX from Yongsan). Not walkable; cross Gwangju to U-Square terminal, take a bus to Haenam (1 h 24 m–1 h 48 m), then the 20-minute Daeheungsa bus
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was documented on the pages opened. From Haenam Bus Terminal the Daeheungsa local bus runs about every 30 minutes and takes about 20 minutes (temple guide, undated); check the last bus back at the terminal, or take a taxi.
Getting home
Bus times for the festival dates were not verified. Direct express buses from Haenam to Seoul run only a few times a day and the last one may leave before the evening programs end (the 2025 festival ran to 21:00), so check the last bus to Seoul Central City or Dong Seoul at Haenam terminal before the festival day. To stay later, the usual route is a bus from Haenam to Gwangju U-Square (1 h 24 m–1 h 48 m) and an express bus from there to Seoul; check those last departures at the terminals too. Return times of the local bus from the park were not found, so allow for a taxi back to Haenam terminal. Kumho Express's overnight Incheon Airport bus leaves Haenam just after midnight; check its departure time at Haenam terminal.
Parking
Festival parking was not described on the pages opened; the Daeheungsa temple car park on the same road is paid.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
A 1.6 km cable car from the park's facilities area to an upper station just below Gogyebong peak (635 m), where an observation deck looks over the island-dotted southern sea, on clear days as far as Hallasan on Jeju; the ride takes about 8 minutes. It runs 09:00–18:00 from April to November, all week, but stops in strong wind, so go up in the morning or mid-afternoon between festival meals. Check the fare at the ticket office: online tickets must be bought a day ahead.
Getting there: Lower station in the park's facilities area before Daeheungsa (Daeheungsa-gil 88-45), on the festival road: on foot or a short taxi ride
A Buddhist mountain monastery at the head of the Duryunsan valley, said to date from the Baekje period, the headquarters of the monk army in the Imjin War, and one of the 'Sansa' mountain monasteries on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 2018. Entry is free, but general visitors may not enter after 19:00, so walk up in daylight, before the evening shows. Its Iljiam hermitage, home of the monk Choui and regarded as a cradle of Korean tea culture, is a further climb above.
Getting there: Up the same valley road on foot (Daeheungsa-gil 400; the festival is at no. 154); free
- Getting awayAfter
The park is about 20 minutes by local bus from Haenam Bus Terminal, and the last local bus back was not verified: check it when you arrive, or plan on a taxi. Direct buses to Seoul are few and may leave before the evening shows end; the later route is a bus to Gwangju U-Square and an express bus on to Seoul. Check both last departures at Haenam terminal before the evening.
